Vocal Masterclass Discussion For Season 7 Of The Voice: The Battle Rounds

IMG_0304.JPGPicture Credit: NBC/THE VOICE

Yesterday was Thanksgiving Day here in Canada so I totally forgot about The Voice. My apologies everyone.

This week, we enter the second phase of this show – The Battle Rounds. Hopefully, the stronger singers will survive but, in the past, we do see many talented singers leave this phase of the competition all too soon.

This show is mainly a media platform for these singers – they receive a boost from the exposure but, once the lights go down, they are on their own.

To this date, no singer from this show has emerged as a veritable superstar a la Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson – which is hard to believe considering how phenomenal the vocal talent has proven to be on this show. It really is strange.

The Voice airs on Monday and Tuesday, October 13th and 14th, at 8:00 PM on NBC.

If anyone out there wants to recap the show, I will be forever grateful for your expertise and insight. You can contact me via my Contact Page.

Will you be watching? Please share in the comments section.

She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler. She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8. In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman. In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins. In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright. In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins. 1. Not much to say about this season so far except that the judges work better together than any previous group has. We have only begun to see their coaching style. I hope to see Reagan James battle tonight and hope that she isn’t one of the one trick ponies that we have seen in past seasons who have a great audition and never rise to that same level again.

It’s a shame that they haven’t produced a big star from this show but at least there is the value of the platform that you spoke of. We have talked in the past about how Blake supports his team members after the season is over. I don’t know if the others do that or not, but I saw his former team member Rae Lynn opening for Miranda Lambert on her tour this summer. She had her own band and performed all original material. She is the only one that I have personally seen but I have read stories of other team Blake singers opening for major acts. One girl whose name eludes me sings backup with Blake. I’m still not a fan of Rae Lynn, but it is an example of Blake’s post competition support that I think is admirable, and a Voice alumni making a living at their craft. Maybe other readers have sightings to report.

  2. just a quickie for the moment: i am SO glad that they are offering the duets on itunes. there were some in the past that i was crazy about but they only offered the solo performance. this is so much better. thus far, i loved ‘jolene’.

  3. Jolene was very good. Sometimes I think the duets are the best part of the Voice. They should consider adding the option of allowing a coach to convert a battle round pair into a duo for the remainder of the competition.

  4. Gene – I love that idea. Smart!! Hopefully, The Voice lurkers can take you up on your suggestion.

  5. Gene – you mentioned Rae Lynn but what about Danielle Bradbury? She won and was on Blake’s team. I thought for sure she would be a star by now. Such a shame.

  6. that is a good idea gene…if they were going to be booted off. it is sort of like ‘xfactor’ does…joining people together into groups.

  9. MCL,
Sorry for the delay. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

I only mentioned Rae Lynn because I actually saw her in person but I think Danielle Bradbury is doing fine. She sold more iTunes downloads than any Voice contestant from any season. She signed with Big Machine Records which would be my dream label if I were in her position. Taylor Swift was the firstartist signed by Big Machine and they were smart enough to relise the potential in a sixteen year old girl and gave her more leeway and artist freedom than most established artist get. Frankly, that was genious because I would have turned her away, but the rest is history (and lots of money.) I think Danielle has two albums now.

Danielle’s first tour was opening for Brad Paisley, one of Country’s top drawing acts and later she toured with Hunter Hayes who you may remember as the young artist she performed with in the final round during her season. It was hard to tell which of them was the pro and which was the contestant.

I saw an email notice a while back from the GRand Ole Opry that she was scheduled to perform on the Opry. That was during the period when they were doing their shows at the old Ryman Theater, the original home of the Opry due to flood damage at the new opry house. So she performed on the very spot where Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash and everyone who ever played “three chords and the truth music” before her played. Can you imagine how that must feel? I saw her sing the National Anthem at the inaugral US Grand Prix in Austin and she had some musical connection to the plympics but I’m not sure what it was. I also saw her on TV performing at some sort of large outdoor music festival. She is a very natural young singer and I’m glad to see that she is off to a pretty good start.

I sort of stole the duo idea from the X-Factor like Hunter mentioned. The Voice already allows duos to compeat so it seems like an easy option to impliment to spice it up a little. I don’t know how many times I’ve thought that “those two are great together, the should be a duo.”

If you get a cable channel called AXS TV (pronounce Access TV) there is a Michael Buble special on tonght at 9.00 Eastern/ The program is called “Profiles”.

  10. i was going to comment on the olympics thing regarding Danielle Bradbury but gene added 9 million other things that she has done. i just googled:

Danielle Bradbery may not be able to complete a triple lutz or compete in freestyle moguls, but she’ll be forever linked to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. ‘The Voice‘ Season 4 winner is “the voice” of the Games’ promotional campaign that partners NBC Olympics with ‘The Voice.’

The campaign features Bradbery, and is fittingly built around her newest single ‘My Day.’

A one-minute promotional sport debuted last night (Dec. 11) on ‘The Voice’ and it captures Bradbery’s gorgeous voice, the inspirational lyrics of the song, and the deep passion, excitement, and competitive spirit of the Olympic Games. It is interspersed with footage of Olympic athletes, ranging from world-class figure skaters to the ever-dominant snowboarder Shaun White.

“When I first heard the song ‘My Day,’ I knew I wanted to cut it immediately, because the day I won ‘The Voice’ was truly the most amazing day of my life. The song reminded me of all the excitement and honor I experienced on that magical evening,” says Bradbery. “I am honored to be able to share the song through this special campaign honoring our Olympic heroes, who I look forward to cheering on this winter on NBC.”

The promo does a fantastic job at getting viewers exhilarated for another season of exciting Olympic Games. You may even get goosebumps, remembering special moments from previous years. Promotional spots of varying length — 30-second, 60-second and song-length versions — will air across NBCUniversal’s family of networks in the weeks leading into the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

‘My Day’ is featured on Bradbery’s self-titled debut album, which was released on Nov. 25. Her newest venture partnering with the Winter Olympics and representing country music earns her a gold medal in our book!

  11. i saw at people dot com a mention of the swonn brothers having released an album. i never could understand why blake liked them, but he did.

  12. Thank for digging that up Hunter.

I knew she did something for the Olympics but I didn’t know what. It’s also good to hear that The Voice has been more active with promoting her than they have with past artist.

I watched the latest episode of “Nashville” tonight and one of the themes of the show was the lack of bill topping females in Country music today. There are an awful lot of crumpled cowboy hats and pickup trucks and way too much emphasis on what I call “red neck rock” but there are good artist out there if you dig a little bit. Most of the ones I like are older or female.

Yeah, the Swan brothers didn’t work for me either.

MCL You are missing Michael Buble. It airs again latter tonight on AXS. Just a bio piece but it’s pretty good.

  13. Gene W – The Buble was on?? I don’t think I receive the AXS channel. Darn! He has a ton of relatives here in my hometown. Maybe they will replay it and I could let his family know. Thank you so much. :):)

  14. Jacquie Lee has a new EP coming out on Tuesday. I listened to it on MJ’s site, and am very impressed! I don’t quite understand why she isn’t releasing a whole album right now. What record label wouldn’t want to give that girl the opportunity?! I still wish she would have won instead of Tessanne.

  15. The show was called

    Profiles “Michael Buble: Simply Buble”

Apparantly the name of the series that aired the show on AXS is “Profiles.” You may be able to fine that program carried on another network.

It was interesting, sort of a biography piece but the production style was pretty weird. There were maybe four “experts” on Buble lore to whom they turned to tell his story. The weird part was that in each case, everyone of the experts said the same thing, one after the other. There were quite a few clips of him singing though and things that I didn’t know about his career from the beginning forward. I know your a fan girl, so you may be familiar with his story already.

I found this promo clip online:

It says that you can rent the video for $3.99.

  18. I just read that Joanne Borgella who was a contestant during Season 7 of AI passed away today. She had a rare form of cancer, and was 32. I remember her. She got voted off the first week of the live show. Such a shame Season 7 has lost another alum.
