Well, that was quite the finish wasn’t it? But, you know, the memory of Jermaine Paul’s Top 4 performances on the Monday’s edition of The Voice was nagging at me all day yesterday.
There is no denying – he was outstanding on the Performance Show. Yes, he was melisma-crazy, but, hey, that’s what R&B and Gospel is all about so I cannot fault him there. He left his heart on that stage, more so than any other artist on that particular evening.
This is what I had to say to one of my readers who was baffled by the outcome:
…..one thing to remember. The voting will be skewed in favor of the most popular judge as well.
And Blake Shelton has legions of fans and his likability factor is through the roof.
Hence, it stands to reason that his fans got behind him and made sure that his artist was the top vote-getter. Not that Jermaine did not deserve the win. I think he is a tremendously gifted vocalist.
But there was no way Jose that Chris Mann was going to win this thing. Christina’s bizarre antics all season got in the way of a smooth line to the finish. It’s too bad.
And Adam was playing along with her, so his guy, Tony Lucca, was going no where as well.
So, that leaves Juliet Simms – Cee Lo’sgirl. She was Top 2 which, according to voting protocol, is reserved for female singers only. Heaven help us if she actually won this thing. A Female Win? Never!
Well, Simon has had good results, but he probably pulls strings every which way to achieve them.
I think this summarizes the outcome in a nutshell. These judges have to realize that their words and actions come at a price and, if they do not behave professionally on television, then good luck mentoring your singer to the win.
Also, Blake was on the Tonight Show With Jay Leno a few days before the Top 4 Performance Show, plugging Jermaine and asking the audience to vote for him. And, it didn’t hurt that his interview portion further highlighted what a great, fun-loving guy he is!
So, mystery solved. The Jermaine win was pre-ordained and finely orchestrated. Bravo Blake and Jermaine.. Nicely played!

Not sure I entirely agree. I think Tony’s performance this week was much weaker than the previous 2 weeks. Personally I thought Juliet was the better of the top two but not by much. They were the two best performances of the night though and fittingly finished 1 and 2. If Juliet had performed last week’s number this week she would likely have won, but it is debateable then whether or not she would even have made the final.
In regards to Christina, I agree that her antics hurt her team but then again Chris was never going to win, but at the same time it probably helped Tony get to the final. Christina’s antics in all likelihood helped Tony more than his other mousketeer friends. No disrespect to Tony as I thought he really improved as the series progressed.
Agree that Blake’s popularity also helped but so did his strategy of doing Soul Man as the duet, while allowing Jermaine take the leading role in the duet. A very smart move, and making the Sam and Dave classic look like fun also didn’t hurt.
In the end the performances were excellent, and despite Christina’s antics, the finale had a feel good feeling about it, and I’m sure few viewers were too disappointed in the results even if their favourite singer did not win.

Sean – I thought it was a great show as well. But, I do think that there is some judge love – or not – happening among the viewers. Also, Jermaine was really solid in his performances, so that helped to propel him to the top.
Juliet did get stuck with some weird song choices but I am glad she made the Final 2 because she deserved to be there.

It seems that there is a majority thinking that Christina did play a huge role in what happened with Chris, and to a lesser extent, Tony. Thanks Chad. I already read it after I posted my last blog topic. Wish I would have seen it before as I would have worked it into the topic. But I did touch on this in my blog topic earlier in the day about Jermaine’s win.
