Barbra Streisand, Down With Love

Masterclass Monday: Down With Love By Barbra Streisand

There is nothing “down” about this fabulous performance (featured below) by the legendary Barbra Streisand. She is one of my favorite performers in the entire universe and, for a long period of my life, the only singer that had any influence on me whatsoever.

She is a genius at her craft. She absolutely lives and breathes every ounce of her music and is a master at narrating the lyrics to her audience in a memorable and significant way.

Down With Love, from the 1937 musical “Hooray for What!”, has been recorded by numerous artists, not the least of which is the great Judy Garland.

It is a strange twist of irony that this performance was recorded on the Judy Garland Show on October 4th, 1963. Judy Garland gave her a standing ovation at the end of the performance. What an honor for this young rising star.

Barbra Streisand was only 21-years-old at the time. Hard to believe, isn’t it?

Because of the multi-dimensional musical components in the arrangement, combined with the brilliant delivery of the artist, I feel Ms. Streisand’s version is the better of the two.

Do you agree or agree to disagree? Happy Masterclass Monday everyone.

  1. MCL,
She’s incredible. So expressive, yet natural. Even though she is a talented actress she doesn’t sound like a Broadway stage actress signing this song in the way that Judy Garland does to me. It is probably because Judy may have performed without microphones in the days when you had to sell it to the guy in the cheap seats.

You miss a lot if you only listen to Streisand. You have to watch all of the subtle and not so subtle expressions and contortions that her face goes through when she delivers a song to get everything that she is offering in the performance. She also uses her very expressive face in a similar way when she is acting.

I absolutely agree with your choice on this song. The set was pretty cool too. Thanks for posting it.

  2. Gene – glad you enjoyed it. She is such a genius at her vocal craft. Singers can learn so much just by watching her.

  3. BTW, your description of her was like “butta,.”

  4. WOW!!! Fabulous!
I’ll never forget the very first time I heard Barbra sing. My parents were watching the Ed Sullivan show, but I was reading. When I heard her voice, I had to look up and was mesmerized by her and have loved her ever since.

Recently I watched a PBS special — Barbra Streisand: One Night Only at the Village Vanguard. Wonderful!

  5. Louise – I never saw this PBS special. I wonder if it’s out on DVD? Will check YouTube as well.

  6. Louise…I watched that special, and loved watching her hubby James sitting in the audience just as mesmerized as everyone else!!!

  7. MCL . . . Amazon has Barbra’s special on DVD. The very small audience was filled with lots of celebrities, including Bill Clinton.

And, Vonnie, it was great to see her husband front and center.

  8. I have the Barbra Streisand “Television Specials” and it is a 5 disc collection. Awesome, just so entertaining! In the “Barbra Streisand: One Night Only at the Village Vanguard” there is a distinct maturity in her voice. Still wonderful – how great is that?

I’d love to see Lea Michele (Glee) sing with Barbra some day!
