Vocal Masterclass Discussion Thread For Canadian Idol Top 4 Performances Featuring The Music Of Anne Murray

I am dying – just dying – to see how these guys do with the music of Anne Murray. Because the whole situation looks and sounds absurd, maybe the reverse effect will happen tonight. I mean, at least they won’t be performing karaoke versions of her songs. If they do, I will truly be frightened! haha.

So, stranger things have happened on these Idol shows. Wait, I ‘m wrong! This is the strangest set of circumstances I have ever seen. And that is why I think that every stone will be turned and every “i” will be dotted and every “t” will be crossed to ensure a credible show tonight.

And, if not, then Canadian Idol has to put the blame where it belongs – on the production staff of Canadian Idol and their flawed vision of what this show is supposed to be about – SINGERS!

  1. Yes. Indeed.

Although I think Earl will do an Earl-version of Anne Murray that isn’t too heavy on the actual singing, and the judges will probably love it. *sigh*

  2. Actually Paulman, there is a spoiler thread over at the Canadian Idol message board. Eastern Canada has already witnessed the performances and were not overly impressed. And it sounds like the judges have thrown in the towel with some of the performers.

Let’s see what we have here in 15 minutes.

  3. I haven’t seen the show yet, but word is that Drew and Theo were the best of the night. I think in Drew’s case he probably just took a while to adjust to the show. That pure voice is magic with the right song.

Hey MCL, isn’t this how we’ve been calling it??? Drew & Theo (& Amberly who is gone)

    Gonna go watch the show!

  4. I’ve picked my Idol and it’s Drew. I love Theo too, but I’m a sucker for Drew’s voice and tone. I just love the purity and clarity of it. I’ve been voting for both of them until now, but it’s time to pick one.

Drew’s first number was just brilliant. I LOVED it.

    Theo was great as usual.

Mitch and Earl were horribly out of tune.

  5. Yes, Idolina, it definitely should be a Theo and Drew Top 2. But, honestly, tonight’s show was am absolute trainwreck.

Mitch and Earl were not good at all this – poor song selections, uninspired artistry and vocals, the whole nine yards.

Drew’s vocals were solid, but, again, for me the song selections were very weak. Just not enough dimension within the songs or diversity between songs.

Theo = first song was great and he sounded very good. I wish he would not scrunch up his face when he sings; it truly is distracting and lessens the technical impact on his voice production. His facial features should be open and free – this is one thing that Drew does do very well.

And, going back to Drew, he looks fabulous without the beard and I think his hair colour is brighter. I never noticed his blue eyes before this evening’s show. But, I digress.

Theo’s last song – not good. I just thought his vocals faltered immensely – too much choreography and so the vocals suffered. His pitch was out of control – yikes! And it seemed too showy and ostentatious. Not genuine in the least.

What a mess! Although Anne Murray was wonderful.

  6. I have to say that I am leaning toward Drew. He is real and his vocals are pure. He needs to be mentored in song selection, but, the raw talent is there for the taking.

  7. MCL, that’s exactly how I feel about Drew. People would pay big bucks for a voice like that. You should listen to him sing U2 at his hometown concert. It’s unbelievable.

He does need some mentoring in song selection, but that voice is just so pretty.

He was in the b2 last week, so I’m worried. Voting steadily here.

The consensus on the CI boards was that he was best of the night, followed by Theo.

    The other 2 are laughable.

  8. Well let’s hope that Drew and Theo are safe today. I’m getting really nervous, especially after the way Canada has been voting this season.

Mitch should go home, but I think it will be Earl (Alberta vote split).

  9. Hmmmm – that’s a tough call. I am hoping that Drew and Theo are safe as well. But who knows with this show anymore?

  10. Hey everyone!

I’m smiling because Drew and Theo made it into the top 3! Yay!

Earl went home, and although he probably should have stayed over Mitch, it doesn’t really matter. Drew and Theo should be the top 2. I’m guessing that Mitch was the other member of the bottom 2, but we weren’t shown that. I kinda figured it would be Earl though b/c of Alberta vote splitting (and Theo is clearly the better of the 2 Albertans). Last week Ontario spoke by keeping Drew over Mookie (and they got it right!!!).

Drew and Theo both have their strengths and weaknesses. Drew is my favourite, but I’d be ok with Theo winning too.

  11. I agree Idolina. Let’s see what next week brings, but, bottom line, Mitch still hasn’t been in the Bottom yet. Maybe he was this week, but, without Ben announcing anything, we’ll never know. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a Theo/Drew Finale.
