American Idol 2015 – 2016 Will Be The Final Season. Fox Announces Its New Fall LineUp

 AmerIcan Idol Judges

Okay, someone stop the bleeding. Now!  This news is beyond sad.

The Fox Network just announced its new PrimeTime Series for the 2015-2016 season.  In the release, new, returning and cancelled shows were highlighted.

The Bad News:  the 2015-2016 season of American Idol will be the final season.  I cannot say that I am truly shocked but, part of me – a HUGE part – is saddened by the loss of what was truly an American Institution in the music world.

That being said, next year’s 15th season of American Idol will be a celebratory one and I, for one, cannot wait until this farewell party begins.  Suffice it to say that this will be a huge ratings booster for this much loved show, especially if we expect to see a bevy of American Idol Alumnae as part of the process.

Also, I will go on record now to say that the Final Winner of American Idol will be a huge superstar in the same way that the first winner – Kelly Clarkson – was received after her win.  The first and the last!  The bookends of this fabulously conceived – but at times flawed- show!

Here is part of the press release from Fox:

AMERICAN IDOL will begin its 15th – and final – season this January on FOX. A season-long celebratory event, AMERICAN IDOL XV will feature host Ryan Seacrest and judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr., as they search for the final IDOL superstar and pay tribute to the past 14 seasons of amazingly talented contestants and the millions of fans who tweeted, texted and championed their IDOLs”.

However, it appears that Fox is making new inroads, paving the way for new and exciting viewing material:

Grease Live
As previously announced, GREASE: LIVE, a three-hour production of the massively popular crossover musical “Grease,” starring superstar singers, dancers and actresses Julianne Hough (“Safe Haven,” “Rock of Ages”) and Vanessa Hudgens (Broadway’s “Gigi,” “Spring Breakers”), will air LIVE Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016 on FOX. With Hough as the angelic “Sandy” – Rydell High’s most talked-about newcomer – and Hudgens as iconic bad girl “Rizzo,” this first-ever live television production of “Grease” will re-imagine the hit musical for an entirely new generation”

THE X-FILES

“Thirteen years after the original series run, the next mind-bending chapter of THE X-FILES will be a thrilling, six-episode event series helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter, with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson re-inhabiting their roles as iconic FBI Agents FOX MULDER and DANA SCULLY. This marks the momentous return of the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history. Production on THE X-FILES event series is set to begin in summer 2015. THE X-FILES originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny), as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena”.

Unfortunately, The Kevin Bacon thriller, “The Following ” has been officially cancelled.  And rightfully so.  It has pretty much run its course but what a ride!  It was quite the thriller but was becoming increasingly more gruesome with each passing week.

CLICK HERE to see the full schedule. Lots of surprises in store !  Not to worry MasterChef fans. – both the adult and junior versions are returning and I have said it before and I will say it again – these shows are two of the best produced shows on television right now.

Comments are now open for business. Let them fly!

  1. I was expecting this. It’s time but it is sad. I have hope that the show will go out on a high note and that Fox and the producers will do their best to honor the legacy of the show but I do worry.

  2. Yes I think the 15th season will be gangbusters quite frankly. It is going to be a tough farewell though.

  3. You’re right–I’m sorry, but not surprised. AI was a great showcase for new talent when it started, but it’s gotten progressively less in touch with the current music scene, and has become as much a liability as an asset to the singers.

Here’s hoping they make a big splash with their final season, so they can go out with a bang instead of a whimper!

  4. The writing has been on the wall for a LONG time. Though I maintain the REAL problem is that the show was never treated with the respect it deserved.
