Well, we all knew this was coming. Paula Abdul has recently confirmed that she will be a judge on the highly anticipated singing competition, The X-Factor.
She will be joined by X-Factor creator, Simon Cowell, along with previously confirmed judges, former Def Jam president L.A. Reid and British superstar Cheryl Cole.
Paula and Simon together again makes for very interesting television. They are an intriguing pair, aren’t they? Totally within their own element and could care less what the press says about them.
During American Idol, neither had a filter when commenting about the singers. Paula was all gushy and warm and, sometimes would ramble, but then that’s who she was and is. And Simon was the reverse – rude, insensitive and blunt. Opposites attract! Mystery solved!
Let’s face it. American Idol has been struggling with chemistry between the rotating wheel of judges ever since Paula left a couple of seasons ago. Because say what you want about Simon and Paula, whatever they had together as a judging team simply worked.
Yes, sometimes, things went a little wonky, but, overall, it was a great ride. The viewers developed a love/hate relationship with the duo yet still tuned in every week for more loving and hating.
This show, however, will take them to a different level in that they will be responsible for mentoring the singers. Now, that I can’t wait to see. I want to understand what they, as judges, can offer the singers in terms of developing their performing and vocal skills.
The show debuts this Fall on Fox. Oh Vey! Between X-Factor, American Idol and NBC’s The Voice there will singing competitions 365 days of the year. But it begs to question: Will they all last? Ah, “therein lies the rub”!

Oh, Roseanne – don’t forget ” America’s Got Talent” which had several singers in the top spots. I agree something has to give. How much time is there to watch all these programs. Not everyone can view them on the Internet.
This week is crazy… tomorrow there’s “Glee”, 2 hours “Dancing With the Stars” and “The Voice.” I want to watch all three but something has to give. I record performances, so I am not sure what will work. Oh, and my Granddaughter has a Baseball game at 5:00 PM. LOL!
I am not excited about the “X-Factor” but it looks like it has a built in fan base already. I may peek in from time to tie and maybe watch the Finals. Most of the time, I did like Paula. The last three years of Idol, I couldn’t tolerate Simon and his cruelty. Will he act differently?
A big factor to consider is the MUSIC buying public. The more singers you have out there, the more diluted it is. There will be too many singers competiting for the available money spent on MUSIC. It will become tougher for the Idols to sell albums!
A successful tour is a must for “American Idol.” It will set the stage for which Idols will actually sell CDs. It will be harder to become successful. At least that’s how I see it right now.
(I am looking forward to “So You Think You Can Dance”!!)

I attended a taping of the X Factor here in L.A. last night. When I get a chance, I’ll write up my observations.
