Vocal Masterclass Discussion Thread For Canadian Idol Top 6 Performances Featuring Simple Plan

Well, let’s see what we have this week. What a surprise! More rock!

This week’s show features songs from the Canadian Rock Songbook. The Top 6 will be mentored by Montreal rock group, Simple Plan.

I believe the show has already aired in Eastern Canada so, hopefully, I will get some comments and/or spoilers before the show airs here in Ontario.

Were there any surprises this week? Enquiring masterclass minds want to know! 🙂

Looking forward to your lively commentary, readers.

    Ok…here’s my review….

If Theo does not win Canadian Idol, something is seriously wrong. I really really like him. He has the package and did a great job tonight. He landed in the b3 last week. He has no business being there.

I liked Amberly, despite some of the negative comments. It wasn’t her best, but it was a lot better than some of the others tonight.

Mitch improved over past weeks, but I still did not enjoy it.

Drew had a bad week, and I am a Drew fan. This just did not feel right, but was saved by the softer spots. Drew has an amazing voice, but I suspect that Idol is not the place for him. It’s swallowing him up and he’s taken too many beatings from the judges. They do not like him, and I suspect it’s more than just the singing.

Earl. Gets away with way too much, as usual.

Mookie. Technically, a mess but he’s a star. I wish the judges would mention his technique, or lack thereof at least once.

    B3: Drew, Earl and Mitch

    Who I’m voting for: Theo

Theo was incredibly strong tonight, but, hey, that’s old news. He was superb from Day One and is only getting better. And, I am so glad that he rounded out his mouth and relaxed his jaw. Use that classical training, my man. It’s what separates you from the rest. That and the fact that he is an enormously talented musician! Love him!

Mookie, on the other hand, is growing and growing and growing….. I now understand why he won over the judges during the inital stages of the audition process.

On the other hand, they should call him on his technical deficiencies – I am glad that Simple Plan did so. Star quality or not, you have to be able to maintain a healthy vocal instrument that will allow you to sing with diversity over the long term.

So, when he sings a ballad and nails it, then talk to me. Until then, he is a great entertainer and, for me, it ends there.

Drew picked an awful song, but his vocals were excellent. He just seemed really anxious or something at the beginning.

Mitch and Earl -not bad, but Mitch was far better than Earl. Loved the acoustic performance but I am not a fan of his vocal timbre. It is so thin and emaciated-no technical skills whatsoever.

Earl just looks like he is not taking this show seriously and so I don’t take him seriously as a performer. I find his performances very laidback and I don’t hear anything soulful in his style at all. Soulful music should inspire and there was no level of inspiration in his performance.

And Amberly was wonderful, although tentative at the beginning. But, her voice should be insured through Lloyds Of London. It is such a beautiful instrument and she has enormous stage presence. Enormous and genuine.

MCL, I agree with everything you just said. LOL.

Drew actually has a very nice sounding voice and could have won this competition, were it not for poor song choices. I think it may be too late for him to win, but he’s still very talented. I listened to him sing Hallelujah on YouTube and really enjoyed it.

Theo is awesome. He strikes a good balance between singing and art. Also love Amberly. Her voice is amazing.

The rest of them just don’t sing well enough for me to take them seriously.

I’m a big fan of Amberly, but I’m starting to develop the opinion that her stylistic range is too limited. She seems to excel at beautiful, “gentle” songs but is unable to deliver the necessary dynamic range of volume and/or intensity required for some songs. Do you know what I mean? It seems like she isn’t (currently) capable of putting as much energy into her voice to copy, say, Celine Dion (i.e. really “belting” the notes out, like how Katherine St. Laurent did earlier this season).

She sang a Feist song tonight, and I haven’t listened too much to Feist, but doesn’t Feist sing with a punchier, more guttural sound? That seems to be something that Amberly hasn’t shown at all (yet). I love her Folksy performances, but I wish she was able to diversify her vocal/emotional delivery.

It’s like she sings all her notes as normal or “slurred” together (to use some classical piano/violin terminology), but doesn’t seem to be able to sing out staccato or accented notes.

Am I making any sense with my “critique”?

Ugh, this show really stinks this year. Amberly is probably the best female singer they have ever had on this show.

I have never said this before but the producers should not have allowed this to happen. I though there was a fine line buried somewhere in the Idol contract that they have final say over the voters. If so, this was the time to exercise it.

What’s going to happen next week? Theo eliminated? And how is Anne Murray supposed to coach these dudes. I mean, really. It makes no sense.

Agree 100% MCL. This is my second season watching, and Amberly was the best female singer on both seasons (although I downloaded an episode of season 2 and Theresa Sokyrka sounds really good!). I think next week should be ok since they’re doing Beatles songs but as for the week after, I have no idea. Right now, I think Mookie will be leaving next week, but who knows? Ah well, at least I have other seasons I can download (I’ve heard so much about how great season 2 was, in particular) and watch, and you have your tour recaps from AI7! Keep them up – they’re great to read! 🙂

The minute that Jake Gold showed us his top 4, I knew it was trouble. I wasn’t sure if Drew or Mitch would be hurt most by it, or if it would be the 4 who were named. I guess we have our answer. Amberly going home is a joke and there goes one of my top 3.

I’m really frustrated with this season for a couple of reasons, although I do respect all of the contestants. It can’t be easy emotionally to be on these shows. My 3 biggest beefs of the season:

    1. The judges advice/comments for Drew. I love the sound of Drew’s voice, but he makes poor song choices and takes bad advice from the judges. This probably speaks more about Drew and his not knowing who he is as an artist, as opposed to the advice on it’s own. Yes, the advice has been poor, but if he knew who he was as an artist, perhaps he would not stray down the wrong path. I think he needs to stay far away from animation (contrary to what they asked him to do), while still remembering to emote. That said, his voice is stunning and my favourite of the bunch. (I think Theo deserves to win though as I personally feel that he is better artistically and as a whole).

    2. Too much focus on animation. Yes, I’m a fan of strong performer types, but without the vocals to back it up, you enter into the realm of gimmic.

    3. Not enough variety. Too many boys trying to do the same thing. It’s not so much a gender thing for me, but the fact that there were less females contributed to the lack of variety. The show simply did not have something for everyone.

That said, I appreciate all the contestants and hope they have supportive families.

quick blurb on foxesonidol about CI this week

    This Week On Canadian Idol…
Going into this week there were just six, and in a wide-open field, the picture begins to get clearer on who is actually winning this thing. Don’t ask me, because I was sure it would be an all Pigott finale! Oops. It was Canadian Rock Week (which meant I only knew two songs), and all of the contestants performed with visible passion. Guest mentors were A Simple Plan. I will reserve comment that they are woefully under-qualified to be in such a position. I guess I didn’t though, did I?
The bottom three were Soulful Skater Earl, Beautiful Folkish Amberly and Intense Rocker Drew. In a stunner that drew boos from the audience, Amberly took last bow. Her performance of Fight’s “1, 2, 3, 4” was certainly credible (and first) but that song makes me want to drive into a tree.
Next week, Beatles Week in an all-male top five for the first time in Canadian Idol history!
