David Archuleta Performs “Stand By Me” On The View

Mmm, mmm mmm – that was one luscious performance of “Stand By Me” on The View. David’s pure and immaculate vocal quality remained a stunning presence throughout this showcase. His ascending and descending runs were technically and artistically secure, perfectly centered and phrased with an intelligent musical approach.

I loved the head voice toward the end of this song – wasn’t that gorgeous? And then, to emerge from the sustained quality of his head voice and manoeuver yet another vocal run in a descending direction, was a final testament to the strength of his technical skills and the diligent preparatory approach he has toward his music.

My only worry -periodically, I noticed his mouth adopting a horizontal formation and this made me very nervous. Sometimes, during performances, fatigue factors into the equation, so maybe his diaphragmatic breathing muscles were having an “off” day.

However, I loved the new, mature version of this song and the little gleam in his eye when he started the line “beautiful ladies”. Oh, little David, you are going to break hearts over the course of time! 🙂

  1. I heard both of them were there at 5-5:30am to rehearse for the live performance at 8am. I certainly wouldn’t want to be up at that time.

Either way I absolutely loved this performance!

  2. Thank you, MCL! You said what I was thinking so much better than I could. The way he sang that last ‘me’ — wow! He held it and moved the notes around to a beautiful conclusion. I thought the song was over, but he had more to give. What a singer! This stuff isn’t easy to do.

And the next to last ‘stand’ is also gorgeous! Sweet and soulful.

Thanks frogcooke, I didn’t know they had to get started so early in the morning. I hope they have lots of stamina for the long summer tour and don’t over-work their voices.

  3. Love your reviews MCL-thank you for your insight! And if you worry, then I worry – do you think the 8:00 am time had anything to do with it?

    Take care 🙂

  4. Really loved your “chat” on Fanblast. Yes, David did remarkable on The View. I’m not one that usually posts comments. David’s voice seemed off in an interview during the Wall-E premiere. He seemed to gasp and clear his throat a lot. I hope he is okay.

  5. Well, David is growing up before my eyes. He was very confident and sounded fantastic and pure. It looks as though he has been working on his performance skills too. Not much of the hand movement. Its kind of bittersweet because part of the reason I loved watching him was because he was obviously so lost in what he was singing that he couldn’t control that hand. Lol. Still, he must evolve and I feel he knows who he is and won’t change too much. The end was jaw dropping for me. I just replaying that part.

You know, I watched a couple of interviews and like godavida pointed out above, he has stopped speaking and cleared his throat quite a bit. Is that an obvious sign of fatigue, MCL?

  6. I love the softness in his voice during one of the first repeats of “Stand by me.” I love his smile when he nears the “beautiful girls” line, and afterward. And I love when the camera pans the audience and you see so many of the women smmiling right back at David. I am so glad to have this performance saved on Tivo — maybe forever.

David has to be tired. Still, I believe he has such good habits that he’ll manage the grueling schedule. I’m just glad we’ve had a chance to see him, here and there.

When’s that CD coming out? LOL.

  7. Thanks MCL for your wonderful reviews. Some people on IDF suggested they saw David looking at his dad when he sang the first “stand by me” line. What do you guys think? 🙂

Like waikiki, I feel like “little” David is growing up already! Hard to believe, but I am loving his voice more each time I hear him (esp. away from the competition pressures of Idol). I hope both Davids put out CDs asap because I can hardly wait to hear both of them.

MCL, I appreciate the bits about “horizontal formation” because it’s like getting a vocal lesson! Now I have to go back to try and catch what you noticed 🙂
