  5. Wow, Lauren one and two that’s awesome! I think she might just win! 😃 How wonderful that three original songs charted in the top ten.

I think Blake messed up with he and Lauren’s duet, of all the songs, he picked that one? She could have charted all three of her songs in the top ten.

  6. Only their cover songs were good for me from all of them. Didn’t love any of the singles and the duets were poorly choosen.

Of the four, Blake gave Aliyah a pretty good showcase with their duet but that was it for me. Sweet kid with great energy. She performs effortlessl. I hope she finds an appropriate venue for her talents in the future. His choice for Lauren was terrible, as Vonnie said, so many choices.

  7. Is it just me, or does Adam seem to be dissing Lauren, ALOT? I like Jessie, but do feel he is riding in on Sundance Head’s coat tails. I didn’t understand Adam’s comment about him being what the Voice is about…I thought they all are what the Voice is about!?!?!?!?

  8. I think so too, but Jesse seems more like Laith Al-Saadi to me. Laith was a much better guitarist but if you listen to him a while he sounds like he is gargling his tonsils, sort of like an 85 year old blues man.

  9. One concern I have for Jesse is how hard he leaned on Chris Stapleton’s material during the season. He covered at least two of his songs during the season and even his original was penned by Stapleton. Of course Stapleton is very popular and very good in my opinion but I can’t see that working to his favor in the real world. Chris will keep his best material for himself and will get first shot at the work of other song writers.

BTW, they had some Roy Head (Sundance’s Dad) memorabilia on display at the Hard Rock.

  10. Agree Gene! That is so cool about Roy Head’s memorabilia, I had no clue who he was, but was very impressed with the clip of him last season. The guy had some serious moves. 😃 I much prefer Sundance to Jesse, and didn’t care a lot for Laith, but thought he was a super nice guy.

Adam saying that we’ve all heard “Lauren” before; step into any honked tonk bar and you will hear “Jesse” too. It’s hard anymore to hear that distinct voice, everyone seems to sound like someone. Used to be as soon as someone started to sing you knew who they were, not so anymore. I think what will set Lauren apart in the country realm, will be the need to “over sing”. Her easy manner should serve her well.

  11. Adam has a habbit of of making a sideways complimentand then a jab followed by another compliment. Like you’re great, it’s so good it’s boring, one of the great voices, you sound like so many great singers etc. Not exactly what he said but similar. (There should be some sort of marks you use when you are making up a quote)

Lauren is my favorite as well but I have a few concerns for her as well. You could see most of these issues last night. Her starpower is very low. Stars attract people to themand then the people are more receptive to seeing them perform. Little Aliyah is on fire with starpower. I doubt that I will ever buy a record from her but I am very attracted to her and open to see what she will do next. You see an energy in her walk, an engaging smile, bright eyes and so on. Enunciation and making sure she is heard, whether it be raising her own volume at the beginning of a line or being sure that she is being accomidated by the sound guy. She has a very nice voice and she could make a splash. I don’t know anything about her writting but I wouldn’t have chosen the song she sang last night for that point in the competition. It sounded like an album filler song to me. No real hook, no ironic twist, not a sing along, didn’t compliment her voice very well and there were no beer, noots or pickup trucks. Fortunatly, it’s selling.

I saw Roy Head at the sock hop at the local skating rink when I was a kid. He was beyond his peak at that point. He was a pretty serious competitor for James Brown for dance anticts on stage back then. There were several good bands that played those little spots for a pretty young audiance. I also saw and band who were pretty good in their own right whose lead guitar player was Dwayne Allman and lead singer and organistwas Greg Allman. The band was called Hour Glass and these two notables left and formed the Allman Brothers band. Nothing like that for kids anymore.

Who won the mirror ball? I haven’t watched this season.

So onward and upward to the next competition, AGT and JLo’s new dance show. They advertise that show as if she is dancing Gold and never mention the fact that Derek Houf is a judge as well, who can dance circles, squares and whatever else shape around her any day of the week. Lol. So if JLo is on this show, Harry has his own show, who will be judges for the new Idol, I feel pretty sure that was part of Ryan’s package to move to NY and be on the Kelly show, and doing his radio show from there too, so that he can host Idol. Really hoping out of the three judges they bring Keith back, I liked him the best; speaking of Keith, have you heard his BeeGee tribute song? Simply outstanding, what a beautiful voice he has and such charisma on stage…stop me already, goodness, I’m gushing here! 😜😃

  15. Mirror ball was won by Rashad Jennings. I was rooting for him because he grew up in my neck of the woods.

Congrats to Chris on winning The Voice.

The only judge I’ve heard of so far for Idol 2.0 is Katy Perry.

I see that there is another singing competition show coming on this summer. This one is about boy bands.

  16. i’m curious if anyone else thought that the jesse and ceelo green duet was the mis-match of the night. i was thinking all those scantily clad females writhing all over the two of them were really really bad and why would ‘the show’ do that then i realized, i bet it was all ceelo since that is his thing. i could only think of ceelo’s issues around sex/drugging women watching that. acky!! and there is jesse with his newly pregnant wife in the audience. poor guy.

i wonder if they had asked chris stapleton to sing with jesse. that would have been more appropriate. i wonder if chris said no. as i listened to chris sing, i thought that was so good, it was better to hear him by himself, but still, that thing with ceelo gave me the creeps.

  17. Idol Girl,

Hmm! Not sure how I feel about Katie Perry for a judge, but hey, I wasn’t crazy about Miley either and ended up thinking she did okay, so, we’ll see. 😃 Yeah, I did see the Boy Band thing, Lol, not sure about that one, Boy Bands don’t seem to last very long before the grow up and want to forget that they were ever in a boy band.

Thanks for the mirror ball winner! 😃

    Hunter,

Ugh! I actually didn’t watch the finale, I taped it to watch this morning, so I will for sure ff through the Jesse/Celo song…I’m really surprised they even had him on with the controversy surrounding him🤔Wait, sounds like they reenacted that controversy for all to see! 😳😂

  18. Congratulations Chris!

He seems to be a decent young man. I’m not sure if such a person can survive in today’s entertainment industry but I wish hi, well.

Voting results didn’t coinside with iTunes sales for any of the top four placements. I agree Hunter, Jesse got screwed for the sake of promoting Cee Lo.

Rashad and Emma winng was a well sorted out decission by the fans. They seemed to reject the contestants who had prior experience in any way related to dance. Rashad was a football player with no past connection to dancing that brought a great attitude and a strong work ethic and found the perfect partner in Emma Slater. They were a pleasure to watch. I think the fans got the second and third place finishers in the wrong order though.

The old Idol died largely because of too much weight at the top. Their budgets were built around the income they had during the shows heyday. When the show began the host(s) were DJs that most of the audience had never heard of and the judging panel consisted of two performers that were well past their prime and an industry insider who was unknown to American artist. I’ll bet the saleries of all five of these people was about 25% of what J Lo was paid. Ryan also used the show to promote acts that I wouldn’t have leaned into a club door to listen to for more than 15 seconds. At the same time, they continued to cut back on investment in the contestants.

Ryan returning as host to a panel of A list performers is a proven model for failure. A new host would find the hearts of America just like Ryan did and like Carson Daily did and Ed Sulivan and Johnny Carson and on and on. He isn’t nessasary for the success of Idol II. Every dollar they spend on over priced celebraties is a dollar they don’t have to spend on the contestants. The Sing off used extremely well informed B and C list performers who offered the best judges comentaries I have ever heard. This extremely low budget show that only ran a few weeks per season for three seasons produced one extremely successful group, unlike the mega budget The Voice)

Can’t think of anything to recomend Katy Perry.

  20. Gene,

I am leaning too, to a different host for Idol; should they even call it “Idol”? Maybe fresh faces and a fresh new title…but do we really need another singing show? I’m going with, No! I agree with your thoughts on the budget issues, I didn’t think JLo was worth what she was getting paid (which I understand was far more than Harry and Keith) but when they brought the Mariah and Nikki disaster to the show, that was the end of idol as we knew it.

I really don’t know what the new producers can do to make this successful; they must fix all of the broken parts of the old show, like less panning of the judges, lose Hollywood week, definitely lose the “worst” auditions, and stop dictating the winner before the competition begins. Oh and go back to a top 24 and let the voting begin then, not by judge eliminations. Okay, I’m done for now…😳

  22. All are good points Vonnie and I would like to see the same changes. Resistance to change was another issue that helped sink the fun ship American Idol. Your best point may be the issue of the name. Calling a new show, American Idol will invite comparisons to the now sainted old show.

There is a lot to take from the DWTS model as well. The network has remained loyal to the show, there are no superstar saleries being paid, yet all of the staff are very competant in their fields. It’s good intertainment with an underlying human interest story. For the most part, it is family friendly. They have made subtle changes in the way the show is presented and a large investment in the set without losing the roots of the show.

  26. I’m sorry Idol Girl, I didn’t see your question. The group I was refering to from the Sing-Off was Pentatonixs who won season 3.

They have managed to take an a cappella group into the mainstream and apparently have a pretty strong following. I recall seeing them listed in an email of upcomming events in my area maybe a year ago. They were planning two shows and the dates were around 6 months away from the announcement. The next time I looked at the list, both of their shows were sold out but none of the better known artist were.

  27. Great article Idol Girl…I really didn’t want to sound like a sore loser, this article said everything I have been thinking. This feels like the Adam/Kris thing on idol, one of the things that went on to break the show. I think with the twitter instant save too, has shown that votes doesn’t matter, those who vote the night before, is tossed aside for an elite group of east coast tweeters! Rant over 😃

  31. I don’t know of any past contestant who was able to overcome the iTunes multiplier effect with conventional votes. Plus, only voting, either on the website or with the app is so easy it would be hard to imagine a person who would spend their hard earned money on an iTunes download and not vote online as well.

Lauren will be better off than Chris unless their contract prevents them from releasing recordings ahead of the winner. Blake has his own lable as well as many contacts in Nashville and he has a track record of supporting his team members. Lauren already has her foot in the door in the industry through writing so She should be able to get a contract that is more favorable to her than Chris will with the winner’s contract. It will work out, but I’m currious how they came to this result.

  33. Curious too I am…I thought the iTunes ranking was the golden goose! It won’t be good for the show as it seems to have lost all credibility. But you are right Gene, Lauren being on Blake’s team was a huge win for her, I would expect to hear that she is opening shows for him this summer.

Any suggestions for a new name for the all new idol show? I’m thinking, but nothing has materialized from it.

  34. I wonder if Gwen will do as Blake has done and help promote her team members. I’m not sure if she still performs on a regular basis but she should be well connected,

Along the lines of your Idol name question, I’m wondering if they will still target the same type of contestant that Idol has in the past. A different contestant pool might make a different name more appropriate for the show.

Color me skeptical on New Idol’s future, especially with Katy Perry as a judge!

  35. I just read the article about The Voice finale. It made a lot of good points. Even though I preferred Chris Blue to Lauren, it certainly did seem to be a no-brainer that Lauren would win. I’m not usually a fan of country, so she didn’t have much appeal for me, but she already seemed like she was a country star.

As for future Idol judges, I’ve read that they are courting Kelly Clarkson. That would be a good choice! I’m not particularly a Katy Perry fan, but it looks like they’re trying to make the show more appealing to younger viewers. Personally, I’ll really miss Harry. 😦

As for the outcome of DWTS, I was surprised that Rashaid won, thinking that it would surely be Nomani. But Rashaid was really good, and his personality really appealed to women I know–that smile!!! I personally would loved to have seen the final two be Simone and Nomani. I was surprised, but happy that Heather was voted off early. In my opinion, she shouldn’t have been a contestant in the first place.

  37. Hi Louise,

Yeah, I think the math certainly didn’t add up for a Chris win, but, it is what it is and we just know going forward that these shows are produced and the outcome has little to nothing to do with our voting.

ABC waited a little to long to approach Kelly Clarkson, she and Jennifer Hudson have both signed on to be judges on the Voice; Jennifer this Fall and Kelly in the Spring. I’m not sure how I feel about Katy Perry, but thinking if they are trying to reach the younger crowd for this show, Bruno Mars or The Beeb’s is where I would start looking for judges. However, there’s an awful lot of Idol Alumni that would do a lot better, Adam, Taylor, Kelli P., the list goes on.
