[Spoiler] Song Choices For American Idol Season 12 Top 5 Song Choices

20130416-142134.jpgIf you want to be spoiled about tomorrow’s American Idol Top 5 show, then The IdolPad has got you covered!

The Top 5 theme is Divas and Birth Year. Not all of the singers have finalized their songs as of this writing, but I will update this topic as soon as I receive the information.

There is quite an interesting mix here. And, both Candice and Amber will be a singing Mariah songs and both have the vocal chops to do justice to these songs.

And, I love their Birth Year song choices. Very unusual and unexpected.

It will be interesting to hear Angie’s take on Beyonce’s Halo.

Here is what we have so far:

Divas:
Amber Holcomb – “Without You” by Badfinger/Mariah Carey
Angela Miller – “Halo” by Beyoncé
Candice Glover – “When You Believe” by Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston
Janelle Arthur – “Dumb Blond” by Dolly Parton
Kree Harrison – by Celine Dion

Birth Year:
Amber Holcomb – “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?” by Michael Dees/Barbara Streisand (1994)
Angela Miller – “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders (1994)
Candice Glover – “Straight Up” by Paula Abdul (1989)

  1. Wow – I think Candice’s choices are really interesting & if they go well (and I think they will) they will showcase her flexibility & ability to tackle different genres. I’m a bit disappointed with Amber’s Diva choice because I think she is trying too hard to be Beyonce Jr. But her birth year choice is better. Kree’s Birth Year Choice is also very interesting & will allow her to break out of her mold a little bit (or even a lot).

Still watching “Love Song” video – I get goosebumps on my goosebumps :).

I also for the record think that TPTB threw Lazaro totally under the bus by allowing him to attempt “Close to You”. Even given the circumstances that he was likely to be leaving, that was NOT the song for him.

  2. Darlene – I have lost count on the number of times I have watched Love Song.

Some of this week’s song choices are interesting. I am actually looking forward to this. 🙂

  3. Darlene,

I am with you in not wanting Amber to be Beyonce Jr. I listened to my recording of her performance of the Beyonce song last week a few times and realized that I didn’t like it as much as I did the first time. I don’t think Beyonce is the way to go for Amber. I always want these young people to be the best they can be, not a carbon copy of someone else. I am not a big fan of Beyonce, but she is talented and has a good voice. I just don’t see Amber being that kind of artist. I liked her performance of the Bacharach/David song so much more.

I think Candace’s performance of “Love Song” is one of those that you just cannot get enough of, that you listen to over and over.

Oh and I agree about Lazaro getting thrown under the bus with “Close to You”. That is one of my favorite Bacharach/David songs and all the time he was singing it, I kept hearing Karen Carpenter’s version in my head. That was a disaster in the making!

  6. Yes, interesting says it all. I would be relaxed and more confident too if I wasn’t coming under the judges’ scrutiny every week. It just seems to me that the judges are trying to build up Kree’s confidence every week at the expense of the others.

  8. Louise,

Thanks for the link. Interesting reading! I thought it was fascinating to read that this person thinks Amber has unlimited potential. I like that observation and think it’s quite accurate. I sometimes wonder if Amber knows how good she really is. I said it before, but it bears repeating – we have not seen the best of her yet! This person also thought her choice of the Beyonce song was good. I guess because I don’t love Beyonce, maybe that’s why I didn’t love that song choice.

Now that we have our top five females, I look forward to tonight’s performances!

  9. I love Beyonce. What a voice and the charisma. And she is so intelligent. So, I can’t get enough Beyonce but I sure don’t want singers to imitate her because no one can.

But, for me, at the end of the day, the singer with the most overall potential for marketing success is Amber.

Candice brings equal – arguably better – vocal excellence but does not have immediate – and I said immediate – marketing appeal yet.

  10. Just out of curiosity; what makes Amber more marketable? Physical, vocal, ect…

  11. What if:

A show like the Voice would take their approach to the blind auditions one step further…what if no one seen the contestant at all. All interviews and live shows would be done behind a screen…then it would truly be called The Voice, because that is what we would be voting on…

I really want a show that truly is out to find the best voice…

  13. MCL,

I think it’s interesting that you believe Amber is the most marketable. I think that would be the first time that my favorite would ever have been described that way! I am so focused on the voices when I first listen to these contestants, that I honestly don’t notice them all that much. Over the weeks, that’s when I check them out physically and personality wise and everything else.

You did say that Candace brings equal – arguably better- vocals than Amber. I think these two are very close when it comes to their voices. I don’t know that Candace is better. Maybe more experienced, more comfortable, more aware of what her voice can do might be accurate. I think Amber just has this gift and it all comes so naturally to her. I have this sense that she doesn’t yet know all that her voice can do. She is a glamour puss, but also seems like a lovely young woman.

I am waiting for a breakout performance from Amber. I would love to see her just blow us all away with a mind blowing performance!

I am on the west coast and won’t get to see the show until much later. But I will try to post my thoughts probably long after all of you have gone to bed! 🙂
