Vocal Masterclass Discussion Thread For American Idol Season 11: The St. Louis Auditions

Tonight, American Idol features the final stop of the Season 11 audition tour – the city of St. Louis. Think we’ll find any blues singers? One can only hope!

Wednesday’s Portland show was pretty weak, I thought. Lots of people with back stories and mediocre voices. I can’t see many going far during Hollywood week. We’ll see soon enough!

I am pretty much done with these auditions and just want the live performances to “kick-in”.

Right now, it is a veritable snail fest, although the atmosphere created by the judges and Ryan Seacrest has greatly improved. Lots of positive vibes and good will.

I honestly feel that the American Idol live performances should start sooner so as to avoid colliding with and/or get a jump-start on The Voice and Smash. You know, the early bird gets the worm and all that.

NBC is going to kick some butt with these shows. I hope Fox is ready for a fight.

Are you enjoying the Season 11? Do you think the ratings will improve once the live shows begin?

  1. Yesterday show (Portland) wasn’t that special. I was bored at times. However, tonight’s show in St. Louis was much better! There were at least 3-4 that could well be in the TOP 24. I like Johnny, Lauren, and the young man who’s Dad is in rehab.

Idol really needs to step up the show with great editing. Competition for our viewing time will be at an all-time time. The judges need to be at their best – kind of like Ben Folds, Shane, and Sara from “The Sing-Off.”

I am feeling the same vibes you are, Rosanne. I want them to do well.

  2. Yes KariAnn. I totally agree with your statement. I think Idol is headed in the right direction. Have you seen the Top 24 spoilers? Many singers who were featured and highlighted did NOT make the cut. Strange.

  3. I know Rosanne! Yes, I read the list of TOP 24. Several are there I find interesting.

Did you read what Betty Buckly had to say to Randy? Here is part of it:

    Read the tweets:

OK, I just have to say this: I am sick & tired of Randy Jackson bashing what they think is Bway singing! It’s soo ludicrous! I have yet to

see or hear anyone sound remotely like they are a theatre singer on Idol!! And, further, theatrical singing encompasses every kind of sound,

voice & style. He doesn’t know what he’s talkin’ about!! And by these constant disses he is tellin’ Amer. kids that Bway is some kind of

inferior art form. Next to jazz, Broadway is the only indigenous Amer. art form & with respect, “Dog”, your opinion is whack & uninformed!

I mean, I respect Randy Jackson & everyone certainly has their own likes & dislikes, but THIS constant diss of “Bway” sounding, to his ear,

singers is just so ignorant & stupid that I literally cannot comprehend the producers allowing such mendacity in his remarks! Beyond idiotic

!!! And when Steven Tyler remarked, “They learn that”, I thought I was gonna scream!! All human voices have vibrato in one form or another!

This constant STUPID reference is beneath contempt & I gotta say, too, that all big “rock/pop” shows these days are frickin’ THEATRE!

SOOO, Nigel Lithgow & company, in a world that includes an increase in the popularity of musical in general in theatre, film & television

America Idol needs to WAKE UP to the truth, voices are voices, singing is singing in all forms, styles & genres. These categories have

nothing to do with anything. The Record business in general is in big trouble & why for frickin’ sake would you the creators of “Idol” risk

losing & demeaning any well intended audience. You respond to a singer because you hear their soul or you do not! ENOUGH!! I’VE HAD IT!!

O, while I’m at it. The use of melisma comes outa African American church & made most popular by Mariah Carey & comp. but mindless use of

melisma does NOT a great singer make if it is random & without a true emotional intiation! I’ve really had it, people! Someone tell Lithgow!

  4. The rest of the article is at Rickey’s. I love the fact that Betty really goes after Randy, then Nigel joins in. What do you think?

You know, there were 3 or 4 singers in St. Louis I thought were good enough to advance further. I look forward to your critiques of the TOP 24 or is it TOP 12/13?

  5. Yes, Kariann, I read Betty Buckley’s rant. I wanted to blog about it but this was a busy week and weekend here. May still happen. I am glad that a veritable Broadway star lashed out about this nonsense. It has irked me since Day One and I have mentioned my feelings over the years but it fell on deaf ears I guess. Now we have a real live bonafide Broadway star adding fuel to the fire – thank heavens and about time.

The Top 24 is a good mix, I think. Some good people didn’t make the cut but, apparently, some very good singers fell apart during Hollywood week.

I will start my critiques when the Top 12 are chosen. However, I am on vacation most of March, so a few VM articles may not make it online. Or they will be abbreviated. Will do my best. I love writing those articles.
