Performance Masterclass Discussion For The X Factor Season One: The Top 10

20111109-175357.jpg

We are down to the Top 10 Finalists on The X Factor.

We lost another group last week and chances are we will lose the final group, Lakoda Ryane, this week.

They were in the bottom 2 last week so, unless they have rallied a massive amount of fans over the course of this past week, this will be their last featured appearance on The X Factor stage.

Then we will be left with an assortment of vocal soloists, the most talented being one Melanie Amaro.

This show just seems to be trying so hard. It’s tiring to watch and many of the singers are just not sublimely talented.

Everything looks like hard work – the performances, the back stories, the production, the judges’ body language and banter, the list goes on and on.

Enjoy the show everyone! And saunter by the comments section and add your thoughts.

  1. I’m really starting to hate LA Reid…he didn’t like Melanie’s performance when I thought it was the only real one so far, aside from Rachel!

  2. Well, he is starting to grate on me as well but, in all fairness, I thought Melanie’s song was really boring and she is totally
Asking in charisma. This week was the first week I haven’t enjoyed her.

  3. Short and random thoughts about tonite’s show.

Leroy — more of the same: pleasant voice, boring performer.

Rachel — song was ridiculously inappropriate, but it worked in a weird kind of way. A really cute and spunky young teen can pull off almost anything.

Chris — I appreciate the fact that (unlike Astro) he actually attempts to sing in addition to rapping, although he doesn’t sing that well. But I always seem to enjoy his performances.

Stacy — each week I become increasingly convinced that her ex-husband was right when he told her she isn’t good enough to be a star. Her stank face during the judges’ comments didn’t help.

Melanie — one of my favorite songs, but her performance left me feeling no connection with the lyrics.

Josh — was very much the rocker tonite, but that kind of music is just noise to me.

Astro — very good at what he does, but I can never understand more than a few words of his lyrics. And his purely rap performances (with no real singing involved) are starting to get predictable and repetitious. I can’t imagine listening to an entire concert of this.

Lakoda Rayne — sorry, I can’t even remember this performance.

Drew — I was struck by the fact she said last week was the first time in her life anyone had given her a single critical comment. Too many young performers live in a fantasy world where friends and family have constantly told them how wonderful they are.

Marcus — When he stands still, his voice sounds really good. But when he moves around, his vocals go wonky.

  4. I feel that tonight should have been the time for Drew and Melanie to sing something other than ballads. I enjoyed Drew’s more than Melanie’s. I think Simon mentioned that Melanie was going to be a bit edgy. I sure didn’t see any of that. She always sounds beautiful, but Simon’s choice of song wasn’t great. Josh sounded very weak singing the verses of his song, and i couldn’t understand a word. He seemed much better with the chorus though. I don’t feel it called for a standing ovation from the entire judging panel. Those are a few of my thought about tonight’s show.

  5. That was one weak show last night.

However, as much as it pains me to say this, I thought Astro’s song arrangement was brilliant. They are really trying to make this kid into a star – no holds barred.

Melanie, unfortunately, sang well but there was no passion in her delivery. Part of me suspects vocal tampering, which could have contributed to this less emotional delivery. It sounded too perfect.

Josh was fantastic last night. In fact, he always gives a real, committed performance. Not exactly my style of singing but he was excellent in this rock genre.

All the others – no comment. They were either totally predictable and boring or so “off key” that it was painful to listen.

  6. MCL, I was glad to read your comments about last night’s show. My amateur ears were bored too!!! The only person I truly enjoyed was Josh. I’m sure little Astro will be a big star, but I just don’t enjoy that type of music. Rachel Crow did a pretty good job, but I was bored by Melanie and Drew, Stacy, Leroy, Marcus, and the other rapper whose name escapes me right now. And I’m definitely not into Lakoda Rayne. Almost none of that sounded like rock music to me!!!

  8. Louise – what really gets to me is that Simon has no idea how disappointing this show is in the viewers’ eyes.

I was expecting the talent to be brilliant – with the evolution process a deliberately slow undertaking.

I thought the whole X Factor process would be an exciting experience but, with the lip-synching and “over the top” production, this show has become very tedious to watch.

And, truth be told, there is no one up on that stage with what I consider to have the qualities of an X Factor winner. The vocal talent is just too one-dimensional. Lacking in nuance.

Thanks for the birthday wishes!! 😍

  9. My order best to boot!

Drew’s voice is etheral. She moves me to tears. The little catches in her voice! LA needs to get off her as Astro does the same thing every week.

Astro this young man’s lyrics are well beyond his years. He is truly gifted.

Rachel is a star vocally, charisma spunk she has it all.

Josh, great vocal But not unique

Melanie great vocal no passion and she does not move me.

    Marcus great performer ok singer

    Lakota Ryne Can’t harmonize
Chris usually good last night not so good
Stacy is awful. Please get her off my TV
Leroy voice ok lacks stage pressence

  12. That was a really strange results show. And, as much as I don’t care for Astro’s attitude or his music, I have to admit he is truly gifted. It was good that Simon set him straight tonight. He needed this scare – save the attitude for the music, Astro. Fans don’t need to be spoken to with disrespect.

  13. MCl, I agree with you about Astro.

It seems that in the world of hip hop and rap music, little distinction is made between how a performer behaves on and off stage. To have credibility in that genre, acting like a bad-ass is almost a requirement. Astro seems to have absorbed this attitude.

The rise to stardom of performers like Eminem and Kenye West appears to have been helped, not hurt, by their bratty behavior both on and off stage.

  14. Yes, Malden, the bad attitude does seem like a pre-requisite for this style of music, which is one of the reasons I don’t enjoy it or even condone it.

  15. I couldn’t have guessed the bottom 2 tonight. That was especially a surprise to see Astro there. What an emotional and intense show that was. Astro really needs to work on his attitude. He’s already damaged his reputation big time, and because of that, might wind up in this same position very soon again. I think Stacey was very touched that the audience got behind her, and chanted her name. Her performance of “Amazing Grace” was so beautiful.

  16. Did anyone else notice the group song appears to have been sung live this week, not lip synced?

Two weeks ago, the best evidence that the group song was lip synced was a screw up by Leroy. Ironically, the best evidence that it was sung live this week is another screw up by Leroy.

Here is a video of the group song. At about the 40 second mark, Leroy misses his timing again, but instead of showing evidence of lip syncing, what happens strongly suggests it was sung live.

  17. Yes Malden I did notice Leroy’s mistake. How ironic is this? No real lip synching and still he misses an entry.

And, truth be told, this was a very easy song for the Top 10 – no harmonies, repetitive lyrics, lots of brief solos. So, they should be singing this live.

Is it weird that Astro is starting to grow on me? Now, if he would add some vocal lines in his rap, he would soar!

  18. Even though I feel Astro was being disrespectful last night, I can understand why he was frustrated to be in the bottom 2. He can’t let those things get the best of him. He’s hurting himself with his behavior. Astro needs to now put this week behind him and come back to the show with a positive attitude.

  19. Malden, I love this comment you made about Rachel:

Rachel — song was ridiculously inappropriate, but it worked in a weird kind of way. A really cute and spunky young teen can pull off almost anything.

“Satisfaction” was voted the #1 Rock and Roll Song at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame about 10 years ago. Honestly, when it was out, I sang the words but didn’t quite make the connection! I was so innocent. LOL! RACHEL ROCKED!

I share everyone’s impression of the girls, except I did like Lakoda Rayne’s performance. Melanie and Drew really need a break-out performance this coming week. There will be TWO going home on Wednesday!

Leroy is like a comfortable slipper. I wanted him to sing some of The Temptations music. Put him in The Tempts. I like him.

Josh was rocking to a true Rock song, but at times I felt he was sloppy in his delivery. He definitely was not boring.

Chris was OK. His attempts at singing was shaky. I understand he has a huge following with fans that began even before the show started. I actually thought he might be in the bottom two.

It was time for Stacy to move on. Her professional background and religion caused too much conflict. She had her chance, now the rest is up to her.

I do not like Rap. I cannot understand the lyrics to Rap. I would have no problem with Astro going home next week. His attitude and not wanting to sing was terrible. He deserved the lecture he received. Maybe in real life he is a nice kid, but his arrogance is irritating. I listen to 15 seconds of his song and switch stations. I just cannot take it.

MCL, you are most likely right… Astro will probably sell a whole lot of albums and tour with some big time names, but I don’t find him entertaining.

Does anyone else think Drew resembles Carly Simon?

    Like

  20. Kariann1,

I’m not a Rap fan either. I find Astro quite creative though, and he’s been very consistent. As much as I felt he was out of line last night, I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for him. Simon told him last night to be an adult, but the fact is he’s only 14. He needs a swift kick in the pants and a hug from his mom. Hopefully he’ll have a much better attitude next week, and people will be forgiving.
