A MasterClass Early Pick: Adam Lambert, Cabaret Idol

Could we have found our first Cabaret Idol? Masterclass readers – meet Adam Lambert!

The video below is a promotional video that features the many facets to gold ticket recipient Adam Lambert’s singing style. Suffice it to say that this unbelievably talented young man will not have any trouble with the various theme nights programmed during Season 8 of American Idol. This guy can sing anything and everything.

However, at the core, is an exquisitely shaped vocal instrument, technically and artistically molded through a combination of enormous hard work and natural talent.

She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler. 1. Adam Lambert is my hero. 🙂
My favorite contestant of the last four seasons, hands down.

  2. Adam is an extremely talented young man. Will he win? Dunno. Should he win? Absolutely!

  3. If Adam doesn’t win, he will come very close and will undoubtedly be on producer David Foster’s radar. Mark my words.

  4. I fear that Simon will spend a good deal of time calling Adam “too theatrical.” Why is it no one takes issue when a former Idol lands a Broadway role? Why is musical theatre (and opera) experience considered a negative during the competition? Only the best singers can sing live night after night (and many a rock singer has roots in classical music). Adam is the best male vocalist that Idol has ever seen. He is a master class all to himself.

  5. Isn’t Adam already “discovered” and on his way? I am curious why he is being so promoted on your website this early in the game. It seems you have declared the winner already. To actually be posting his personal promotional video produced to secure victory for him seems to me to signal your selection. Well, I guess you actually say as much. How will you manage to appear objective for the rest of the season?

  6. Teri Lynn, I think your words are a bit harsh. Everyone is entitled to a favorite. We’re not all unbiased robotic drones who stay constantly objective to everything. MCL has the right to call in votes for her favorite just like every other Idol fan does. MCL has proven time and again in her articles that she does not let favoritism influence her honest evaluation of each contestant’s performance. While I am not necessarily a huge fan of Adam yet, there is absolutely no denying that he is great and could easily take the Idol crown if he makes the right choices. As far as Adam being “discovered” is concerned, I don’t know what you mean by that. If someone came up to me prior to this season and told me that they were going to an Adam Lambert concert, I would have no idea what that person was talking about. I haven’t heard any of Adam’s songs on the radio lately or purchased his CD at Wal-Mart either. To me, that is undiscovered enough to be in this competition.

  7. Well, Sara, I guess Simon never heard of the rock group “Queen”. Not a rock group more theatrical than Queen and they seem to have done pretty well. Adam is a cabaret artist in every sense of the word – he embodies all genres of music and will be in the Top 2 this year. He is different and he is extraordinarily talented.

  8. Teri Lynn – Adam is not my only favorite singer at this point. The reason I see him succeeding is that he is very different from any singer they have had on the show up to this point. I predicted that Taylor Hicks would win before the Top 24 semi-final rounds, because of his distinct style and sound – and he did, in Season 5.

However, I can still be objective and those who have followed me closely realize this. I was not a huge fan of Jason Castro last year, but have grown to understand and respect his talent as a songwriter and as an artist. I love him now and, during Season 7, positively encouraged him to develop his technical skills and he did. He is a superb musician and he won me over through the passage of time.

  9. Thanks Galen for taking my back. Your eloquent words are most appreciated. I also have my eye on Jorge and Scott MacIntyre and the girls, I’m afraid, are a bit of a blur right now.

  10. Yeah, I know what you mean about the girls, MCL. For the life of me, I just haven’t noticed any girls this season that make me genuinely go, “Wow!” There just isn’t one that really stands out to me yet. To me, the only memorable one was Bikini Girl, and that was for all of the wrong reasons. LOL

Hopefully, though, more of the female talent will surface as we get into the Top 36 and out of the drudgeries of Hollywood Week. Still, I predict another male American Idol this year. Who that will be yet, I don’t know for sure.

  11. I am not sure how many of you have seen this, but here is a clip of Adam singing Heaven on their Minds from Jesus Christ Superstar (at some benefit concert probably). Simply awe inspiring. This song really separates the wannabes with true singers. While some may think it “over the top,” remember that this song was written to be that way. Masterclasslady, I would love to hear your thoughts on this performance!

  12. MCL, I agree that the guys are a lot better than the girls this season so far. If it continues this way, then this year’s group of guys could be almost as good as last year’s. Adam isn’t one of my most favorite contestants but he sure can sing & will probably make the top 36 for sure!

  13. Thanks for sending this link, Sara. Great performance. Adam is going to go very far in this competition. Top 5 and, possibly, Top 2. He is different from what we have previously seen on the show.

  14. I agree MCL. I think song selection will be key for him. If he shows a lot of variety and picks songs that are crowd favorites, it will help him overcome the “theatrical” bias. I would love to hear him sing some old rock tunes from bands like Styx, Queen (except Bohemian Rhapsody as Constantine is too well known for that), Journey, Aerosmith (and you can guess which tune I am thinking), or even, dare I say it, AC/DC. We know from the Zodiac Show he can hit hard rock tunes out of the park (just make sure to pick songs people are familiar with). Then, hit us the next week with an R&B tune or maybe some Elton John. I would shy away from songs originated by women as much as possible, and he should make sure to show his lower register as well (so he isn’t only known as a “screamer”).

  15. Simon infamously doesn’t really like the whole musical theatre thing so I can imagine as far as Adam [hopefully!] goes, Simon will never give him an easy ride or the credit he deserves. Simon’s far more interested in novelty and niche acts, he doesn’t do broadway. He’s the same in the UK, he calls anything that sounds like West End ‘cruise ship’.

  16. I agree, Sam, that Adam is in for a tough ride with Simon.

However, I will be interested to see if Simon is experiencing a “change of heart” in the the final Hollywood rounds. Adam is so talented and he is distinct – you would think Simon would embrace that. (sigh)

  17. MCL, you predicted Adam would be in the TOP 2 and I just posted TOP 4. LOL. We have high hopes for this young man.

It is so wonderful to hear you say such positive things about Jason! I know he appreciated that. Listening to his recent work shows that he has grown as an artist.

Sara, I would love to hear some Journey from Adam and see how Randy reacts. He sort of reminds me of David Bowie and that “Glam Rock” genere. Yep, Freddie Mercury a little bit too.

Teri Lynn, you will find that MCL gives the BEST musical analysis of any other blog or entertainment writer. She uses theatrical terminology in her evaluations, and is very fair. Stay tuned!

  18. Oh dear, I meant to write MUSICAL TERMINOLOGY, but with Adam, it may also be theatrical! LOL!

  19. I am not a musical buff, I did sing in the chorus and decided to play the drums in high school but I don’t really know a lot about music. I am a huge music fan however, I love all types of music and I am always ready for something new. I do know one thing and that is that Adam Lambert moves me! Something in his voice simply mesmerizes me. I was in the kitchen when I heard his audition and I came around the corner to see who was behind that voice and there he was. I sometimes think of Dream Theater when I hear him sing. Adam’s talent is amazing, he has such style and he is always gracious. Every week I have no idea what to expect but I know he won’t disappoint. Adam can make anything work; from looks to vocals!!! An undiscovered star until now and he shines brightly!
