American Idol Season 10 Los Angeles Auditions

Here is a picture of the American Idol Season 10 team and a more spiffy group I haven’t seen in a long time! Agreed? 

They look professional and accommodating – a nice mix that will, undoubtedly, contribute to the success of the show this season.

Tonight’s Los Angeles segment will be the last session of the “cattle call” auditions before we move into the Hollywood rounds next week.

However, last night’s Austin show, although generally disappointing, revealed two incredibly talented stars in the form of John Wayne Schulz and Janelle Arthur. 

When I can remember the names of two singers  who were on the screen for a few minutes of air time, I know I’m onto something. Both possess enormous star quality and exceptional voices.

And yet, if you Google their names, one apparently makes the Top 40 cut and the other doesn’t.

I’ll leave it to you to find out who and let’s hope all the spoiler blogs out there are really, really wrong.

The show is heating up and we haven’t even seen the Hollywood segments. I can’t remember how long it’s been since I’ve been truly excited for this show’s lineup of rising stars. Wait, yes I can. Season 7 anyone?

Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler. She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8. In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman. In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins. In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright. In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins. Under Rosanne Simunovic’s direction, the Timmins Youth Singers and the Timmins Concert Singers have been featured in numerous choral festivals and performing opportunities outside of Timmins.     Oprah interviewed Randy, Steven and Jennifer this week and it was really good to hear from them–although Steven didn’t have a chance to say much.

    I also like the fact that Jennifer doesn’t spend her time flirting with the other judges–she is taking her job seriously. I have more respect for her than I ever had for Paula and Kara.

    I agree that John Wayne Schulz has an outstanding talent and appears to be a highly admirable young man. But, at the same time, most people in the music industry would regard him as irrelevant and commercially worthless.

    Today’s music market is dominated by sex, drugs, and flamboyant, trend-setting behavior. As a pot-smoking, coke-snorting gay man proud to flaunt his sexuality, Adam Lambert is regarded by the music industry as representing everything that is great and good about American pop music. His iconic AMA performance simulating gay sex will be remembered long after people like John Wayne Schulz and Kris Allen are forgotton. These guys are throwbacks to the days of the 1950s that celebrated boring middle class values such as hard work, honesty, morality, responsibility, humility, religious faith, and devotion to family. There is little place for these values into today’s music market. Which explains why a singer like Miley Cyrus is working so hard to change her image from sweet girl to rebellious, sexual young woman now that she has outgrown her Disney years.

    If Idol continues to allow people like John Wayne Shulz into the competition, the show will rapidly descend into irrelevancy in the music marketplace.

    Jello – how would you explain the success of Michael Buble, Josh Groban, Susan Boyle, Carrie Underwood, Taylor, etc. There is a huge market for these singers and we need to embrace all kinds of talent.

    Jello, lol! I’m not even an Adam Lambert fan, but are you really claiming that he’s not gifted – he’s just GAY? That’s incredibly homophobic and stupid.

    Leticia, No I am not saying Adam is not gifted. He has a huge vocal talent. I’m an Adam fan and have attended four of his concerts. But, in my view, his success is not fueled primarily by his vocal talent, but by the flamboyant, sexualized nature of his public persona and performing style. Adam is like a male version of Madonna or Lady Gaga. Their success is not due primarily to their vocal talent, but to their enormous talent for developing music and performance styles that caters to the market for flamboyant, sexualized entertainment.

    Jello,

    We can all have own our opinions about Adam Lambert, his music, and his performances, but your characterization of him as “a pot-smoking, coke-snorting gay man” is a bit of an exaggeration. Adam’s talked about his drug use including hallucinogens at a Burning Man Festival in his Rolling Stones article, we all know that he lit up a joint on stage in Amsterdam, and he clearly enjoys drinking when he goes out to clubs. He’s never going to have a squeaky clean image. But, there’s never been any evidence of “coke-snorting” or the usage of any hardcore drugs at all. This just sounds like something you threw into your post because it fit your image of him.

    I know local people who’ve known Adam since his childhood and have nothing but accolades for what a truly remarkable, genuine, and appreciative person he is. He has a tremendous work ethic, performing in some one hundred concerts last year of which I attended seven. He’s now starting work on his second album and has received nothing but praise from all of those who have worked with him on AI and during his solo career. He’s nominated for a Grammy, and his artistry and his career are what matter most to him. I just don’t see him blowing this away.

    What is often lost in the “hoopla” of Adam is how incredibly giving he and his fans are. For his 29th birthday last week, he asked his fans to contribute to Charity Water, which invests 100% of all monies raised directly into clean water projects in impoverished countries around the water. Adam’s original goal was a modest $29,000, which we exceeded in just six hours of giving. He quickly upped the goal to $290,000. We are now less than $20,000 away from it.

    Now, Adam is planning the release of a new version of “Aftermath” to raise funds for the Trevor Project, which supports LGBT teenagers in crisis.

    Adam is the type of artist and performer who generates strong reactions. I love his music and his performances, but I know that not everyone does. However, let’s separate the fact from the fiction when talking about him as a person.

    MCL, it was definitely disappointing. I won’t spoil it for you, but there was one highlight for me…I’m sure it will be for you too. 🙂 It was the one thing that stuck out for me.

    Tonight’s was a disappointment big time. Probably only one talent out of all the screechers. I don’t get it. All the 1,000’s and 1,000’s ppl to pick from and they had to pick those? Just for “good TV”? There’s no point. How about that 59 year old man at the end? He was definitely scary and angry! Ppl like that can come in and raz the place with bullets. In this day and age, we don’t need to make fun of ppl whom don’t know they are being made fun of. Terrible! Terrible!

    Surely, I am in complete agreement with you. That guy at the end was pathetic…why devote time to something like that….even if it’s “good TV?” Idol has been good and back on the right path this year – many new people watching the show and many former ones, like myself, have returned to watch it. Last night’s show was a step in the wrong direction. I probably sound very harsh….haha, but I was annoyed. 🙂

    Ugh! Just finished watching some of the LA auditions on YouTube. After seeing some of the “singers”, I won’t waste my time watching the show on PVR. Very disappointing.

    Wow! I was disappointed by the Austin auditions because they didn’t show anyone actually from Austin but at least they didn’t only show boring and terrible acts. So sorry for LA.

    In better news:
    When checking the AI wesite under “The Road to Hollywood” I found that one contestant who received a golden ticket in Austin is actually from Austin. The contestant is Corbin Chase and, I am happy to say, my teens actually know the boy. He is a senior at my son’s high school (son is a Junior). My daughter, who graduated last year, knows Corbin and says that he is in theater, choir, yearbook, and broadcast journalism.

    MCL – I’m not sure whether you keep up with David Archuleta’s video blogs at all, but this one is a MUST-WATCH. As David explains in the video, he just got back from India, where he worked with the Rising Star Outreach charity. I’ll let him tell you the rest. He rambles and repeats himself, but I adore him for it. I guarantee that this video will brighten your day and inspire you. David has such a beautiful and giving soul.
