CNN has just reported that comedy legend, Joan Rivers, has died at the age of 81 years.
Ms. Rivers had stopped breathing during throat surgery at a Manhattan medical clinic last week, according to the New York Fire Department. She apparently suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest during a procedure
CNN had reported on Wednesday evening that she had been moved to a private room but no further details were given at that time. Since the brevity of the statement sounded ominous, it was then left to the public to fill in the blanks.
I loved her. Truly loved her. Because, at the center of her brilliantly formulated and, oftentimes, acerbic humour there was a huge, huge heart.
And she was a survivor! She battled bankruptcy issues, a husband who committed suicide, ridicule, disdain from notable performers such as Johnny Carson and Jay Leno and so much more. The woman could always take a punch and still come out the winner.
Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, issued a statement saying:
“My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”
Our thoughts and our prayers are with her daughter, Melissa and her extended network of family and friends. R.I.P. Joan Rivers. You are irreplaceable. I will miss your “Can We Talk” segments.
Below is a video of Joan with Johnny Carson during happier times. She truly was a gem.
