About Masterclass Lady
Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli.
When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler.
She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8.
In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman.
In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins.
In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright.
In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins.

Seriously folks – Jena and Caleb must be the last two standing. Although I felt that CJ did receive a bum rap from the judges this week. He was exceptional.

I think CJ is frustrating the judges. They know he has the voice and the ear and the maturity, but he keeps singing out of tune. (Tonight he held it together in the verse, and the song suited him very well, but he went right off in the chorus, ouch.)
I’ll have to listen to Caleb on YouTube because I missed him–and I actively dislike Jena’s song (I never heard it before but it is so borrrrring) so I really couldn’t tell if she sang it well or not.
I liked Sam’s stripped-down arrangement, and that he was making better eye contact with the camera, but he’s still too shy on stage. And I liked Alex’s arrangement, too–there’s no question that he knows who he is as an artist, but he really is not comfortable onstage yet either. (Although having a band up there with him did seem to help him.)
Jessica picked a great song for her voice, but she sounded…dull to me. I don’t know why. And Majesty and Malaya both sounded okay, until they started shouting. Someone needs to take away their volume knobs, then they might gain some control over their voices.
Who have I forgotten?…Oh, Dexter. Well, I forgot him. (He can sing modern country just fine, and he sounds good, but so far in a very generic way.)
The judges won it tonight, for me–they were giving very good, specific advice for most of the contestants, and most of these kids, that’s something they can work with.

I think the judges have their favorites. I loved CJ. It was not a perfect vocal performance but stylistically he was great. I didn’t see the first four performers so it is difficult to get a read on the entire show. I do agree that the judges are extremely astute and constructive in their assessments. They were too hard on CJ though.

I just don’t understand why AI doesn’t limit how often they can play the guitar during perforrmances. It would really help the contestants greatly.

Anita – I fully agree. I think that Caleb and Jena really stand out because they are not using any instrument but their voices. This is what this show has been based on!!

I have to turn away from CJ because of his singing off tune. He started off great, but all the bum notes are a huge turn off for me. I can’t get comfortable watching someone when I’m wondering if they’ll hit the next note. I enjoyed Caleb and Jena very much. I like Alex, but he absolutely needs to start moving around on the stage. And Sam sings nicely, but I agree with the judges that he doesn’t connect to the songs at all. He just needs a lot more experience under his belt.

It’s interesting what people hear and see. Frequently I turn my eyes away from the performance and ask myself how long I could listen to this performer’s tone, interpretation style, rhythm, voice – three songs, four songs, five songs, an hour, a day? The only person last night I felt I could listen for more than two songs was Sam. I know, I know, Sam ?!? It’s true.

Looks like they changed the performance order and sent the bus after Alex. Why is baffling. He is good, current, interesting and a true artist. His guitar skills are very good.
Caleb, Jena and Alex were the best for me. Unlike the majority around the net I would round out the middle with Jessica, Sam and Malaya. B3 for me Dexter, CJ and Majesty. CJ should go. His performance was a mess I do not think he was on picth ever. Yes MCL he is stylistically very interesting. But he has serious pitch and control issues. Sadly, I think it will be Majesty who goes and they will use the save.
Food for thought listen to Sam without watching him. His tone is like butter and he is always square on the notes. Right in the pocket. He has seemingly no personality, charm, charisma or the ability to speak but he does sound good. His voice has a richness to it, is soothing and distinguishable. Like Donny, I can listen to him over and over. The issue lies in watching him. It is painful and listening to him speak is worse. I would purchase a CD but never go to see in concert.

Sam has a nice voice but he needs to technically enhance it. I am not hearing what everyone else is hearing and his nerves are crippling him on that stage. I still think CJ was great – a bit gravelly in his voice, but still very good. The pitch was compromised but, for some reason, I felt that his song choice and his delivery superseded his technical problems.

MCA just for the fun of it, listen to both Sam and CJ without watching them. It does change things quite a bit. Listen to studio recordings.

wow, i loved the show! these are ‘my’ kind of songs and i was thrilled to hear them. wow, caleb!! while i’ve appreciated his talent before, i’ve not been *moved*. tonight i was *really* moved. that was amazing. and like they all said, that whole interwoven performance with the band was perfection. one of the band members works with The Voice band too. cool. i agree with aubry’s top four, but i agree with mcl, i really liked cj a lot. i also liked him when the did that group performance in the beginning.

I do not think it was CJ as his studio is for me just as off pitch as his live performance. I think it was Sam who Jlo was referring to. His studio is better than his live performance and sold the best of all this weeks performances.

They chose an unusually high percentage of badly- or un-trained singers this season (which is what I think is bothering you the most, MCL, no?). Majesty’s last sing there was really all over the place, no control at all.
I wish that instead of lowering the age limit to 15 a few years back they had raised it to 18 or a high-school diploma; most of these kids could have used a few years of maturing before trying to sing on national TV, IMO.

I find it helps to try to look at them as potential future singers, instead of actual singers. 🙂
(It’s why I like Alex, for example–he already has a solid understanding of song structure, and how to find the story in any given song, which is a good start. Alas, that ability is not a given, as we can clearly see!)

I feel stupid, but I really can’t hear when someone is singing sharp like CJ. Flat runs a shiver down my spine, so I know I’m not tone deaf. CJs voice is a bit strained sometimes, but it’s not unpleasant to me.
What am I doing wrong?
