There are pivotal moments in my yearly calendar that make me jump up and down with glee. Well, actually, given my Golden Girl status, I sort of jump, maybe, once and then my legs give out. Ha!
There’s Christmas and Easter and Thanksgiving and American Idol and The Voice and SMASH and anything with awards – especially The Oscars.
And tonight is the night when Hollywood is aglow and a glitter as they break out the fancy clothes and stage gala parties in celebration of 2012’s finest work in the world of movie-making. Yes, the Academy Awards are in the house!
The Film Genre is so multi-faceted and very subjective. We are never on the same page as the person next to us. Some actors have more appeal to us than others and some scripts generate more excitement than others.
The Oscars are notorious for the occasional “upset” award – films deemed by the media as shoo-ins to win do not necessarily do so. Ditto for the actors, directors and producers who are nominated.
So, it remains to be seen if front-runner, Argo, takes the big prize tonight. This controversial film is a nail-biter and, although the true facts of this non-fictional story are obscured, there is no denying that it is a tense, gut-wrenching thriller.
So kudos to Ben Affleck and George Clooney for creating such a vivid, albeit mainly fictional, portrayal of an International political event that happened over 30 years ago.
Here is the quick rundown from the LA Times:
The 2013 Oscars ceremony honoring the films of 2012 is set to take place Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The pre-show broadcast will begin on ABC with red carpet arrivals at 4 p.m. PST (7 p.m. EST) and will be hosted by Lara Spencer, Jess Cagle, Kristin Chenoweth and Kelly Rowland. The awards show will start at 5:30 p.m. PST (8:30 p.m. EST) and is scheduled to last three hours. It will be hosted by “Family Guy” and “Ted” star Seth MacFarlane and televised live in more than 225 countries.
So, who are your pics for the win? Hit the comments and let’s celebrate together, shall we?
Well, I’m in a predicament that I often find myself in at this time of year – I’ve only seen one of the movies that’s up for awards. Lincoln all the way!! No, seriously, if Daniel Day-Lewis doesn’t win Best Actor, I’ll be stunned although many are saying that Hugh Jackman has a decent shot with Les Miserables (& having seen him in “The Boy from Oz” on Broadway I would concur that he is an amazing actor/performer/singer). And I would like to see Sally Field win for best supporting actress but I think Anne Hathaway (whom I also love) has a lock on that award. Best Picture??? Should be interesting. My “Argo” DVD ($2 off at Costco) is sitting on my table at home read to be watched.
Have you seen Quartet, MCL? It is absolutely WONDERFUL. That’ll be NEXT year’s movie :)! Maggie Smith for the win!!

Darlene – no I haven’t seen Quartet. I will have to see it. You’ve intrigued me, now! Ha! Anyway, I do think Daniel Day-Lewis will win. It haven’t seen Lincoln but he is an amazing actor and he is hard to beat. I didn’t realize that, if he wins, he will be the only actor to have best Best Male Performance three times. It thought Jack Nicholson won three, but I guess not. It’s show time! Here we go!!
