Vocal Masterclass Discussion For American Idol Season 10 Premiere

American Idol Season 10 Judges, Host, Musical Mentor

Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Lopez, Jimmy Iovine

Well, snuggle up with a blanket and some popcorn. On this cold January evening (depending where you live, of course), American Idol Season 10 premieres on Fox from 8:00 P.M. -10:00 PM ET/PT, featuring preliminary auditions from New York / New Jersey.

And, USA Today has a lot to say about the future of the show’s success. I could not agree more.

There is something refreshing and intriguing about this new Idol format. The show is in the early stages of rebirth and that is always an exciting premise for any show.

We have new faces at the judging table, a new musical mentor, a returning Simon Lythgoe in the role of producer and, as rumor has it, many surprises in store for the viewers down the line.

So, please come back and share your thoughts. The Vocal Masterclass doors are now open for business. Have fun tonight!

MCL…I have a question!!! What is the new thing with the top 24…or top 12, I remember someone saying that this year will be different in how one of these will be selected.

What a fun evening it was! I really like the chemistry between the judges. Steven is so funny and down to earth. Jennifer was sweet but honest; she will be a good judge. And Randy was better than usual. There was some good talent but no one that impressed me as much as Siobhan or Crystal.

I liked the flow of the show with more good auditions than bad. If it continues like this, Idol will be a success this year. They just need some terrific contestants. I believe after the Hollywood cut, there will be 60 going to Las Vegas. From there 20 will be cut, and there will have a TOP 40. I think we will get to vote when there is a TOP 20. I am not sure, though.

There was no way that I missed Simon. I don’t need a mean judge to enjoy a talent-driven reality show! I think Idol will be just fine with some SPECIAL contestants!

    What do you think MCL?

I agree with you Kariann. I really enjoyed the new judges–not so much meanness!!! I even liked JoLo better than Paula. I’m optimistic!

Was it just me, or do you also think that Ryan Secrest got less air time? Personally, I was happy about that.

I loved last nights show…Steven was quirky, funny, and interested in the contestants. Jennifer is lovely, compassionate, and also very much interested in the contestants. Randy was great, he seemed to share the judges table with Steven and Jennifer with ease.

I loved that there was no one being rude to the contestants. I didn’t miss Simon in the least nor Paula, Ellen, and especially not Kara.

I hope this level of fun and laid back atmosphere continues through this whole season!

There wasn’t any one contestant who jumped out at me…the last young man to sing was pretty good, but I haven’t found my Taylor, Adam, or Jason yet, LOL

I wonder if they are going to do anything different with the results show this year, if not I think that I will not be tuning in to those…I really don’t like the “user” singers they have on there.

Why couldn’t they bring back an idol for each show, let them sing and find out what they have been doing since they won idol…just sayin’

    Vonnie,
I agree with you completely about the performers on the results shows. I usually cringe watching them. It’s a great idea to bring back former Idols and Idol contestants who are making a musical career for themselves.

I thought there were a few good voices last night, but no one jumped out at me either.

Here’s hoping for a very entertaining season!

Great evening and lots of superb talent. The judges were excellent and the chemistry was perfect. I will come back comment in detail later on today. I am having a busy morning. Thanks for adding your comments everyone. It’s going to be a great season!

I thought it was such a cohesive panel with a great deal of comradarie going on. I was surprised that Steven Tyler was so funny, I laughed so hard at the “paint chips” comment. The whole evening was full of fun that I can’t wait for tonight’s show to begin. TV has been dismal this Fall season with few winners so this show is a bit of sunshine in a dreary winter season. I am sure they are not going to “bust” out the excellent talent on the first show. The first shows are alway focus on those wanna be’s that will not make it with a few pearls thrown in. I wouldn’t have guessed in a million years that this panel would gel so quickly and make the program so much fun to watch. Here’s to looking forward…..Nigel Rocks, he knows how to put a great show together.

    Simon who?

I can’t disagree with any of the previous comments. The new judging panel is working well together. I think they will have to toughen up a little bit though. You can’t say yes to everyone. I am confident that they will get better as the season goes on.

I saw several promising contestants last night. I don’t pay a lot of attention to their names at this point, so I will give a brief description of them. The singing waitress was my favorite of this group. She made a great song choice (God Bless the Child) which shows some depth in a young singer and wasn’t afraid to commit herself to the performance. I also liked Robby, the 15 year old girl, the boy with a twin brother, and the girl from the refugee family. Maybe it would be easier to write down their names!

The girl from N.C. who sounded like a cross between Forest Gump’s Mom and Gomer Pyle (Yo Yo Dog?) and had her own cheering section was a hoot, but I hope she doesn’t go too far in the competition. She doesn’t sing very well.
Did anyone see the half hour pre-show with Idols from past seasons prior to the show last night? I missed it but my brother happened to see it.

    So far, so good.

    Gene W,

Loved your description of the girl from NC…too funny!!!

    I didn’t even know there was a pre-show, dag-on!

    Sandy,

I loved the paint chip comment also! Did you notice at times the set crew were cracking up at Steven?

    MCL,

Thanks for the info for idols schedule!

    Hi, Gene,

Couldn’t agree more about the girl from South Carolina. She was a nice enough girl but I’m sure she could get very annoying, really fast!!!

I also liked the singing waitress and the girl from Kosovo.

I thought it was a great start, too. Steven Tyler has a great sense of humor. Jennifer Lopez is sweeter than I thought she could be. She seems to really want to bring out the best in the contestants. Randy is, well, Randy. He’s the dry, quiet humor/straight man. I’m glad they didn’t do too much with the embarrassing ones. There were some really great stories. I loved the 16 year old from North Carolina. If anyone could be groomed for success, she can. She seems to have talent, pizazz, presence, and most importantly, the ability to take direction tempered with a strong personality. (repost from wrong thread)

As I watched the show tonight, I realized how much I am appreciating the fact that the judges did NOT make fun of any of the contestants’ appearance. They didn’t tell anyone that they didn’t look good enough but instead stuck to critiquing their voices. It made me think how much the negative remarks from earlier Idol years probably influenced young people to feel free to make fun of and bully their peers. These judges are definitely setting a different tone and example that I hope is a good influence on young people.

There were a couple of people tonight who I thought were terrific–Jordan at the beginning of the show and the young mother with the special needs daughter at the end of the show. There were a few other really good people too.

I am definitely looking forward to the show this year.

I thought that the talent was exceptional tonight. And you raise some valid points, Louise, about the negativity from past seasons. So many people loved watching the early auditions so they could laugh at the less talented singers. Very sad commentary on a segment of our society. This season’s new format is a huge Step in the right direction

I have a special-needs 5 year old. He was a 1 1/2 pound preemie and had so many problems. We almost lost several times. He has grown up a little and is much healthier. We did find out he had hydrocephalus this past spring. He had surgery over the summer. So, needless to say, I was pretty much in tears during that segment.

I did notice last night that when the young man who had said he attended “Idol Camp” sang, Randy was laughing and told him it was horrible…Steven didn’t laugh and looked uncomfortable with the whole exchange; did anyone else notice this?

I think this year will be much better, it is already off to a great start!

I specifically noticed that JLo told the 15-year-old sort of chubby boy that he was “cute.” They liked his voice. I think the old judges would not have put him through to Hollywood because they wouldn’t have thought that he looked like an Idol. I thought this was a really good sign.

Yes I do think that the new judges are more empathetic and courteous to all the singers.

I felt sorry for that young boy who attended Idol camp. He does have a voice but, unfortunately, has been misdirected in his technical approach.

I am surprised that they gave camera time to promote negative publicity for the Idol camp. Strange

I agree Louise…the young 15 year old with the really good voice would have been sent home because he did not fit the image, sad isn’t it? I also like how Jennifer tries to find venues for singers who may not be idol prospects.

MCL…that is a great point about the idol camp, I didn’t think of it that way, but you are right; Randy really did diss the camp. I think Randy has a good heart, I just think over the last nine years of hearing the critical comments from Simon he too has picked up on them and for some reason thinks it a symbol of empowerment! He too will come around!!! Because if I’m remembering right wasn’t Randy one of the one’s who wouldn’t give critical comments to the contestants; didn’t he start out giving fairly good advice?

It really amazes me how much stress and tension the post judges panel caused on idol, compared to now, the mood is so relaxed and funny, and I thought I liked simon??? Not sure I will watch X-Factor!

Hello, Vonnie! How have you been the past 9 months or so?

The boy had a beautiful voice. MCL, I’m guessing his voice hasn’t changed yet? And he would be late, wouldn’t he? It would be awful if it changed in the middle of the season. I worry about the publicity and criticism about his weight. For his own health, I hope he can lose a little weight. It is so hard to lose weight for most people. Perhaps he’ll have a growth spurt. I am not making fun of him, just concerned for his self-esteem and health. I’m not sure the Idol Machine will make it easy for him because they probably perceive that he is marketable. While it is nice to love people just the way they are, it is much easier to lose weight if you have a personal trainer holding you accountable everyday. Seth Rogen, the actor from Knocked Up, lost a good bit of weight … maybe 40 pounds.

I appreciated all the judges’ attitudes. I’m sure there were moments of ridiculousness, but in general I think they were all appropriate.

Isn’t it interesting that in this season of fewer restrictions on song choice during the competition that, with few exceptions, the songs chosen for the auditions have been one Standard, one recent Country song and the rest Pop, Rock and R&B classics? Young Jacee must have gotten a hot tip from his grandparents for Dock of the Bay. It was released nearly three of his lifetimes before his birth. Don’t misunderstand me; I love these choices but they seem odd given the hype about more freedom this year.
Sarah Sellers, who sang Make You Feel My Love, was my pick of the liter from New Orleans and maybe from the competition to date. She had a rich, mellow voice with a well controlled delivery and showed a lot of personal charm and composure, even in the face of Steven hitting on her a little bit. I loved her voice. She was followed closely for me by Paris Tassin with her touching and emotional rendition of Temporary Home. She was the only contestant that I got any of the flavor of New Orleans from. She showed tremendous composure during her audition with her ability to stand and deliver such a personally meaningful song while her superstar audience was noticeably shaken. Very well done! Her baby is blessed to have this young woman for her Mom. Jordan Dorsey, who sang Somewhere over the Rainbow, had a very nice voice and was able to demonstrate some of his versatility by mixing up the tempo during the song. Another one to watch is Brett Lowenstern who discussed hair care and sang Bohemian Rhapsody. Jacee and the coach’s granddaughter bring up the rear for me.
BTW, Jessica, I hope you didn’t think I was making fun of Victoria Huggins from the first night of auditions. When she said “some people see it as a bad thing” she sounded spot on like Forest Gumps Mom. In the movie Sally Field had more of a North Carolina accent, like Victoria’s, than the Alabama accent that she was supposed to have. Victoria sounded more like Gomer Pyle when she delivered the hilarious and well timed “Yo Yo Dawg?” in the form of a question to Randy to see if the Hollywood vote was unanimous. You are right that she has a lot of personality. Kelly Pickler can attest better than anyone to how far that can take you. Even though she wasn’t the best singer to ever grace the Idol stage, she remains one of my favorite contestants. She may well be the smartest contestant in the history of the show. I won’t count Victoria out yet.
The judges continue to do a good job and are coming together as a group. I’m not surprised by Steven’s antics but am pleasantly suppressed by his depth and his interest in these young singers. J-Lo seems like a real sweet lady and a good observer. I appreciated her stopping to speak to Paris on her way out of the audition hall. Randy may have his best year ever. A lot of people sell him and Paula short but Simon was late to get on board with many of the best performers that Idol ever produced. Some attribute a fall in ratings to his absence but changing the night that a popular show airs can hurt ratings as well. I believe the season will sort itself out nicely from what we’ve seen so far.

    Hi Gene W,

I wonder if the ratings are down because so many people tune in to see the worst!

I am so happy that this year they are showing more of the better singers…I wish that they would show all that make it thru, and then if they must, have a show of the not-so-good singers.

I am really loving Steven Tyler…I love when someone is singing he closes his eyes and just listens and then when they are finished he says “beautiful”. I agree with your assesment of his interest in these young people.

I really think that this year the producers need to be more intent on the people that they put in the top 20…the previous years all seem to have the one or two who get votes and great singers leave the Show…Sanjaya anyone!

Here is a chance to get to know a little bit about all of the Golden Ticket holders to date, not just the ones featured on the show. Check out the Road to Hollywood interviews. There are a lot of interesting people.

    http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_10/road_to_hollywood/

Interestingly when ask who their favorite entertainer is, the majority of the ones I have watched so far said Celine Dion. Many said their favorite Idol moment involved Kelly Clarkson in some way, especialy her becoming “verclipsed” will singing A Moment Like This.

    Hi Vonnie,
I hadn’t thought of it that way, but if that’s the case, I hope the show survives without those viewers.

I agree that they could probably market a separate program with, let’s say, “Failed auditions.”

I would also like to see ALL of the successful auditions like you mentioned, but maybe they do us a favor by not letting us fall in love with the space fillers that are already eliminated.

If you are able to watch the interview videos that I mentioned above, I think there are a few people there that will interest you.
