Oh be still my heart – why can’t we discover this level of talent on American Idol? I have been waiting to see a cross-genre artist on American Idol and it looks like it just isn’t going to happen. I thought this was the direction that Adam Lambert was moving toward during Season 8, but, as of now, not yet. He is more than capable – it’s his call.
But Jamie Cullum’s style incorporates big band + jazz + pop rock + hip hop and his very cool and current musical delivery is absolutely refreshing to hear.
In the above video, filmed during his innovative performance of Rihanna’s “Please Don’t Stop The Music” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jamie moves with rhythmic ease and precision from the stage to the piano, then fiddles with the keys and the piano strings, then back to the stage and then ends at the piano. You see – this is what performing is all about!
And Jamie can pen his own music. His new double-disc album, The Pursuit [CD / DVD] [Deluxe Edition] is available on Amazon.Com and ITunes and anywhere else that you can find great music. It contains an eclectic array of Jamie’s original music and exciting arrangements of cover songs.
The Amazon.Com editorial stated:
The Pursuit features nine Cullum originals and five cover songs that showcase the Grammy® and Golden Globe nominated entertainer’s unique voice and iconoclastic interpretive skills. The self-penned gems include the buoyant first single “I’m All Over It,” the cheerfully apocalyptic “Wheels,” the animated swing of “You and Me Are Gone,” Cullum’s love song to music “Mixtape” and his love song to love “Love Ain’t Gonna Let You Down.” Elsewhere on the album, Cullum reinvents 1930s jazz standards (Cole Porter’s “Just One Of Those Things” and “Love For Sale”), brings the dance floor into the bedroom (Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop The Music”) and cleans the pancake off the Great White Way (Leslie Bricusse’s “If I Ruled the World” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Not While I’m Around”).
That’s good enough for me. ITunes and Amazon – here I come!

MCL,
Thank you so much for introducing us to this multi-talented artist! What a great experience to listen to this kind of unbridled, exceptional singing, as well as all the musical instruments. I am definitely going to check out his cd on itunes!
When you mentioned that you hoped Adam might go in this direction, it just punctuated the disappointment I feel about what he has chosen to do at this point in his career. At least with Jamie, he knows it’s about the vocals. Somehow, the instruments never interfere with his voice. Now that’s being intelligent and appreciating your own talent!
We share a great love for the wonders of the human voice, in all its many incarnations. I am so glad that you continue to seek out this kind of talent and make us aware of it, so that we can experience the joy of listening!

Mindy – thank you for your kind words. Jamie just touched me with his artistry and I had to share his talent with all of my readers. I plan to add more as time permits. It is my way of showing all of you the singers that speak to me as a true vocal artist.
