Personal Sentiments About American Idol Season Seven

.
Where do we go from here? Last week at this time, we were celebrating in grand style as the stars of the show, American Idol Runner-Up David Archuleta and American Idol David Cook, joined the rest of the Top 12 during the Grand Finale of American Idol Season 7.

It was a star-studded spectacle and, for me, surpassed the Finales from any other season. Both Davids were in excellent form and artistically showcased why they truly deserved to be the last two standing.

Both have proven to be exemplary role models and, as a collective unit, emphasized the manner in which one can be gracious and humble in victory and in defeat.

Both entered and exited this competition with class and integrity, indicating to us each and every week that dedicated, relentless effort and artistic conviction can rise to the top of the pack.

I feel wholly confident in stating that many stars were born this season on American Idol. And, one didn’t have to be part of the Top 24 to achieve this, as evidenced by Josiah Leming’s recent collaboration with Warner Bros. Records.

So, I invite all of you to share your favorite moments from American Idol this season. Please feel free to add recent news and events as they become available. Our Season 7 journey is not over -why, it’s only beginning!

Special thanks to reader Katherinesmom for suggesting this thread.

Great topic! I can’t say how much I appreicate the positive tone of this site. Thank you Masterclass Lady for all of your wonderful insight.

    Favourite moments:
The way Kristie Lee Cook sang her goodbye song to Simon making him squirm.
Watching David Cook nail Music of the Night
Brooke’s quip on her last night “Sure we’ll stay as long as we can” when she and Seyesha were asked to take a seat on the couch.
    Brooke’s rendition of “I am I said”
David Archuleta: Angels, Think of Me, Stand by Me and the incredible DLTSGDOM.

My favourite post finale interview was from today with Idolatry on ew.com
    http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/05/david-archuleta.html
When he states that Cook can get away with singing about rainbows because of his raspy voice yet if he did it they’d probably actually appear behind him. I’m still laughing over this one.

    Favorite performances:

Carly: Blackbird and Here You Come Again. Both stunning.
DC: Little Sparrow. Also, him laughing as ALW told him to look into his eyes as if he was a beautiful woman was great.
Jason: I liked the Andy Gibb song during top 24. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name right now. 🙂 Also loved Hallelujah. Downloaded some Jeff Buckley after than one. Loved him in the group numbers.
Chikeze: Loved, loved, loved She’s a Woman from Beatles week. One of the most original performances I’ve seen on AI. Glad he is on the tour.
Syesha: Change is Gonna Come. One of my favorite songs as sung by Sam Cooke. She did it well.
Michael Johns: Across the Universe and Its All Wrong. . .For obvious reasons. 🙂
    Brooke White: Let It Be.
Kristy Lee Cook: I can’t think of a performance right now. Nothing against her. I thought it was funny when she accidently made the crude comment to Simon. I remember being sad that she was voted off.
Ramiele. I don’t remember much about her. I thought she was one of the best when the top 24 started.
David A: My absolute favorite so it is so hard to pick. I have to create a list.
Long and Winding Road: Spot on vocals
Smokey Mountain Memories: I was taken with his genuine emotion
Angels: Piano and the beautiful way he sang the chorus
    Stand by Me: Entertainment value.
Love Me Tender: The close-up of his face throughout the performance was beautiful. He sang it so well.
DLTSGDOM: Wow. This entire night is when he gained the respect from the watching public. He now seems to be loved universally and I couldn’t be happier with the way it ended.

Favorite???? Hmm, good question. I loved it all. The two funniest things for me were
when Ryan announced the voting numbers for David Archuleta and said it wasn’t to adopt him and when Jason said ” I didn’t know a cat was singing it “. The sweetest thing for me was when Simon was critiquing David A. and put down the other contestants and David then turned to the other contestants and gave them props and applause. The most heartening thing for me is the apparent mutual affection and respect that the David’s have for one another.

On a side note, I was thrilled to learn that David Archuleta knows of, and so looks up to, Eva Cassidy. On Monday night’s Larry King Live she was his pick of the person he most would want to duet with if he could. Their versions of ” Imagine ” are very similar
and it never even came to my mind until he said it. Unfortunately this will never happen, in some ways I think they are very similar. I hope he doesn’t compromise himself, just like she never did.

    Thanks again for everything Masterclasslady.

I had a long list and posted but it didn’t go through!

I mentioned how special Jason Castro’s performances were. “Over the Rainbow” and “Hallelujah.” He made the season for me.

I loved seeing Jason and Michael dancing (and galloping) through a Group Performance Numbers. Then Michael bumped chests with David Cook.

Very entertaining and moving were “Stand By Me”, “Angels”, and “Imagine” by David Archuleta. He is a terrific talent.

Loved the creativity of David Cook’s, “Billie Jean.” It was a total surprise for me.

Brooke playing the piano and singing, ” I am…I said” AND ” Let It Be.”

waikikibeach, Jason sang, “I Just Want to Be Your Everything” (Andy Gibb). I loved seeing Neil Diamond, but think the Idols loved Dolly Parton!

(MCL, thank you for the thread.)

kariann1-I hoped they would do an itunes 100 night. I thought Jason would have had another special performance. I thought Sorry by Buckcherry or In Love With a Girl by Gavin Degraw would be perfect. Wish they had allowed all the contestants to be a little more current.

What a great idea for comments!

    Some favorites:

When Jason sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”

During the group performance of “One Sweet Day” — Carly’s voice just soared and echoed on her solos. I have that one on my iPod and that one will cause me to keep track of anything she puts out. I know my husband will want her albums, also.

Brooke’s rendition of “Let it Be.” She’s on my watch list, also. As is Jason.

And on to Archie, who has won my devotion as a fan. Some favorites: Love Me Tender, both Imagines, Angels at the piano, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Everything else. LOL. I’m loving him more during the post-Idol interview rounds. He is both introspective and fun. A great combo.

I liked the finale quite a bit. Loved Archie catching the shaving cream off Cookie’s face, and Cook’s laugh. The pair really do seem to enjoy each other.

Oh, that’s another thing. Cook’s and Archie’s laughs. Their laughs, for the win!

I really enjoyed this season of Idol and am already anticipating next years! My favourite moment had to have been ALW night! I am a huge fan of musical theatre and his performances, so to me this was the ultimate night.

In sticking with this musical theme, another golden moment for me was the rendition of Rent’s “Seasons of Love”….just superb!

A few individual standout performances for me were Michael Johns: Across the Universe, David Archuleta: Stand By Me, Syesha: Change is Gonna Come and Jason Castro: Hallelujia!

Thanks, again MCL, for your generous and sincere comments on each singer. I really enjoy this site!

    HAPPY SINGING TO ALL 🙂

My favorite moments of the season:

David Cook’s performances of “Billie Jean”, “Always Be My Baby”, “I’m Alive” and “The World I Know”(among others)
Syesha’s “Vanishing” and “One Rock and Roll Too Many” – she was stepping it up at just the right time
Paulagate (though not how they treated Jason afterwards)
    Chikezie’s “She’s a Woman”
Kristy holding up her “My Seat” sign on the top 9 results show – she was so composed and cool under fire. Plus her “Anyway” performance.
    David Archuleta’s “Think of Me”
Dolly Parton mentoring the contestants. She was so sweet and helpful, and the contestants did great with her songs.
    David Cook’s winning moment

I feel this season trounced the last one in terms of talent, personality, and memorability. I can’t for the next one – and I feel that it’s going to resemble season 5 (one of my other favorite seasons) since season 7 resembled 4, and 6 resembled 3 (somewhat). Bring it on, and thanks for the articles MCL!

bizee, so glad you reminded me of Season of Love (one of my favorite songs … although my 19 year old son loved it, it was the ringtone for his ex and now he ‘hates’ it – LOL!!!)

Best moment, hands down, Brooke singing Teach Your Children Well in the finale. The absolute thrill she felt came right through the TV when, at the end of the song, she said, “Graham Nash … WOW!” To me that was what it is all about … passing along the beautiful songs, memories, knowing who you are as a performer and being unashamed to march to that different drummer.

As much as theme nights can get irritating, I kinda like the ‘kids’ having to learn, and pass along to their peers, some of the all-time great songs. For pure sap, who doesn’t love “Longer”? (but he didn’t have the forest primeval line in it … that blew if for me – HEE!) And, I’m sorry, but youngers SHOULD know who Dolly and Neil Diamond are … like them or not, along with past ‘oldie’ mentors, they made music what it is. I particularly like ALW week, as I LOVE musicals. Not a lot of people, unfortunately, are exposed to theater and/or musicals. It IS part of our cultural base, and they should know about it.

I really enjoyed reading, yet again, what a decent guy Cookie is http://tvwatch.people.com/2008/05/28/david-cook-visits-luke-menard-in-the-hospital/?xid=rss-topheadlines-yahoobuzz Archie’s lovely smile and warmth makes me happy!

As a Mom, I would be SO VERY proud to have either David or Jason to be my ‘baby boys.’ I would truly enjoy meeting Chikeze, Michael, and being best friends with Brooke! I’d like to laugh with Danny … and then smack him! (j/k!) And I wish the VERY best for Luke in his struggle within.

    Favorite moments….hmmmm.

Like Kariann1, Jason made the season for me–extra special standouts being the finale performance of Hallelujah and Over the Rainbow.

Other standout performances for me were David A.’s Imagine, Brooke’s You’re So Vain, and (surprise!) Ramiele’s You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me all the way back in the top 24 week (alas, I think she peaked right there).

Also like Kariann1, loved watching Jason and MJ throw themselves into the group numbers with such enthusiasm (if not grace!)

Was blown away by the sheer class of David C. pulling the rest of the Idols onto the stage–and then the catwalk–for his final singout. Awesome!

Really appreciated the broad range of musical styles on display in the Top 12 this year–this was new and different and great to see.

By the way, MCL, now that the season is over perhaps you’ll have a chance to listen to some of the studio performances and give us your assessments?

    Favorite moments were:

Alexandrea Lushington – If You Leave Me Now (loved her version of the song), Spinning Wheel (i like the way she moved on stage)
Asiah Epperson – Piece of My Heart
Michael Johns – Its All Wrong But Its Alright, Across The Universe
Chikezie – She’s A Woman, All The Woman I Need, Believe To My Soul
David A – Think of Me, We Can Work It Out
Syesha – Yesterday, One Rock and Roll, I Believe, and her audition during Hollywood week when she lost her voice

When Alexandrea was explaining to Ryan how to say her name, she said “You got to let it flow right, its Alex-andrea, not Alex-an-drea”, then Simon said, “I like the attitude”. Then Ryan said, “I’ve got rhythm, I’ve got soul, I just hide it”.

Their group performances, Top 20, Top 12, and Top 8 (Shout to the Lord).

I loved this season, and I’m not sure how Idol is gonna be able to top it. There were quite a few singers that I really liked this year: David Cook (my fave), Carly, Michael, David A, Brooke….

There were a lot of good moments this season, but I guess my fave was the final show and watching David Cook handle the win. It was touching and a deserved win. Was nice to see my personal fave win. I think he will be hugely successful. He just has IT. I’ve loved watching him sing Time of My Life on the talk shows following the win….really nice job and he embraces all of it (tres versatile).

Billie Jean, Hello, Always Be my baby, All I Really Need is You, Eleanor Rigby, FTEISYF, Here I Come Again, Blackbird, Come Together, It’s All Wrong, but It’s All Right, Imagine, Think of Me, Angels, Let it Be….These were some of my fave moments.

I know I’m biased cause Cook is my fave, but my favourite thing about this season is David Cook’s story. I love how he came in under the radar with little editing time and then just exploded with Hello. He had bad hair, little editing (remember Simon saying no to him in auditions? haha), no magic lighting…..yet many of us stood up and took notice that early on: That’s talent!

I suspect we’re gonna see a few albums come out of this season. I can’t wait! What an awesome season.

MCL, I do hope you can give us some studio recording comments! Some of the arrangements on the studio recordings are quite different from the live show. A recording that I particularly love is the studio version of David Archuleta’s Smokey Mountain Memories. While it doesn’t have some of the energy of the live performance, it has a beautiful, haunting quality that makes it one of my favorites of the whole season. Would love your take on that one!

For me, the star from beginning to end was David Archuleta. His audition performance of “Crazy” was pulled before I could see it. But I read that it was the best ever on Idol and would have closed the show before it even started. What he did manage to sing proved that he is a vocal virtuoso and will be a superstar.

    “Shop Around”
Youthful and fun, a perfect song for David and performed with a lot of energy.

    “Imagine”
A tour de force! Flawless. Worthy of a Grammy. I read that this performance helped AI win the right to use the Beatles songbook.

    “Another Day in Paradise”
At the piano, all heart and soul, which David has in abundance.

    “We Can Work it Out”
With problems — strep throat, missed lyrics, and a disco?? beat — still David worked it out in the end. Ever the professional.

    “The Long and Winding Road”
Perfection, followed by a beautiful smile.

    “You’re the Voice”
The ONLY protest song in the entire season at a time when we need protest songs. Backup singers too heavy-handed.

    “Smokey Mountain Memories”
Story-telling that stirs the heart and inspires you to think of your own home. Another masterpiece.

    “Angels”
An evocative vocal, powerfully delivered at the piano with reverence and awe.

    “When You Believe”
What an amazing choice! David took on two divas, Mariah and Whitney, and gave this difficult and semi-classical song a soulful vibe. The falsetto gave me goosebumps, just the way a diva song should.

    “Think of Me”
A signature David Archuleta song! Creative and complex, requiring a two octave range, turning a diva song into a pop/jazz number that is ready for radio! I read that he didn’t want all that orchestration — imagine what he can do when he has total control.

    “Sweet Caroline”
Sweet ‘n’ simple, reaching out and touching the audience.

    “America”
A heartfelt tribute to his mother Lupe, an immigrant from Honduras.

    “Love Me Tender”
Stunning contemporary take on this dear sweet love song! David center stage where he belongs. Caressing every word and everyone.

    “Stand by Me”
Showing up other contestants without ‘showing off’, David proves an old song can sound new without any techno-help, and winning Rock ‘n’ Roll Night in the process.

    “And So It Goes”
Give him a ballad and he’ll sing a ballad like nobody’s business!

    “With You”
Fun! My sisters’ and I loved this! David will do more light-hearted pop airs that make us want to dance. He can sing ‘boo’ whenever it likes.

    “Longer”
Give him yet another ballad, and require that he sing it ‘straight’, and he’ll make you cry.

“Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”
Like MCL, I cannot hear this song without hearing David’s voice. He made it his own.

    “In this Moment”
This might be a ‘so-so’ song, but David’s sophisticated complexity lifts it to a higher level.

    “Imagine” redux
A brave thing to repeat a song sung to such perfection earlier. Ever a masterful singer, David delivered another flawless, soulful rendition.

In the end it wasn’t David vs David. It was AI vs David Archuleta. And who won?
AI: manipulative, secretive, controlling, ratings-hungry, judges-turned-advocates, producers-media plotting.
David A.: a true hero! During the process David and his voice only grew stronger without compromising his values. And now he has a world of dedicated fans growing stronger too.

scriptype, Love your post, I couldn’t agree more. In regards to “Crazy” it was never shown due to “clearance” issues. David tried until the very end to get permission to perform this on the big stage and “Imagine” was his second choice for the finale. Funny, Australian Idol received clearance.

Most of my favorite moments are when David Cook performs. The first was when he sang Hello. To me, that really made a statement about his talent. I mean, good gracious, how in the world did he take a Lionel Richie ballad and turn it into a rock song?

The second was when he sang Always Be My Baby and then afterwards, specifically when Simon said, “It was like coming out of karaoke hell… ” and the crowd started to interrupt with booing, as usual. Then they cut to a shot of Cookie and he looked a little confused but respectfully listened to what Simon had to say. And then Simon continued by saying, “…into a breath of fresh air.” Then Cookie cupped his hands and did that thing that he does when he gets teary-eyed. When he lifted his head, it was apparent that he was overwhelmed by emotion. I have to say that I was teary myself at that point.

So, let me get this correct, Scriptype? Are you a David Archuleta fan? haha

Loved your heartfelt and well defined comments.

I do agree that David A. is destined for enormous success, but, I do beleive that David Cook will enjoy the same level of success.

After all, they are totally different artists, yet both highlight their preferential brand of music through an innovatiive approach. And, at the core, there is a solid technical foundation that is refreshingly relentless.

Thiis Season 7 was such a veritable celebration of artistry in every sense of the word. I cannot imagine how Season 8 will “top” this. It’s going to be tough!

One more comment re: Crazy. Remember Hollywood Week, the judges response to DA first performance. Paula stands and bows, Simon, “That was…Amazing.” DA’s response to their comments, “I can’t believe they liked it sooo much..” I doubt we’ll ever see that performance. Also during the finale he wanted to play the piano and again the viewing public lost out.

I read about the legal problems with “Crazy”. Then I heard Jason Castro say he hopes to sing it on the summer tour. Maybe TPTB can get clearance when it suits them.

Yes, I am a David Archuleta fan and NOT a fan of American Idol. What gave it away?! I haven’t watched the show in years. Archuleta was the only reason I got involved this year. When I just happened to hear his audition, I was hooked.

I like rock ‘n’ roll too, but Cook is overrated, in my opinion. All his songs, he mumbles and screams, terrible diction. His performance leaves me cold, like he isn’t singing for the audience or for the song, but just to say “Look at me”. Sorry, but that’s what I see/hear in him. I think TPTB used him for its own purposes, especially in the way Michael Johns and Carley Smithson were dismissed so early.

I don’t think AI will change all that much. I’ve read that Simon says they might add a fourth judge — what good will that do!? The judges they have are terrible. The show needs a complete shakeup, but they’ll never make the changes that would make me interested. For starters, the unlimited voting is ridiculous. That automatically turns it into a popularity contest. I read that a talent show in Israel has one-person, one-vote — to vote you must register and get a pin number. Not gonna happen in America! Too many corporate interests.

And don’t get me started with the tie-ins to iTunes popularity charts! Or the Las Vegas betting interests!

I am positive about Archuleta’s future, however. After listening to some mediocre singing, voting for hours, and getting depressed over the cruel media, I can now say it was all worth it just to be a fan of this amazing young man. For me the way forward is to focus on David and not give any more energy to this inane TV show.

Finally, let me say again how much I deeply appreciated all your thoughtful and excellent critiques. You were one of the few bright lights in this Idol season.

Jason Castro also sang Crazy in the audition round, and they couldn’t/didn’t get clearance for it (or, apparently, for any of the other songs he sang through Hollywood week), so we never saw him before the Top 24 (a definite disadvantage)–at least we got to hear and see some of David A. before that (he was one of my favorites in the audition rounds)! Jason also tried to get Crazy cleared on at least one other occasion during Season 7; also, no go. So whatever the difficulty with the song, it wasn’t just about David A. But I understand that they don’t need to get the same kind of permissions or clearances for a live show as for a recorded or televised performance; it’s more a matter of just paying royalties, so that’s more possible.

scriptype, I will always be thankful to AI for bringing DA to us. Remember, DA got what he wanted from the experience, a chance to do his best and a chance to make a CD. All is well.

DC is a wonderful artist too. While I won’t be purchasing his CD, I wish him all the best.

I think the AI machinery is manipulative and restricting to all the contestants (think Syesha and not so Happy Feet). What a testament to the artistry an character of all the contestants that we have memorable performances to cherish.

rereader, a lovely kind poster (Dreadhead) sent me 2 copies of Jason’s CD and I play it all the time! I love it. MCL, you may be surprised how nice Jason’s voice records. He has some work to do with vocal training but the CD is awesome. Like yourself I don’t download iTunes, but it is my internet service (dial-up) stopping me. I prefer CDs.
I also have Anthony Fedorov’s songs as well as Clay Aiken’s.

    ““You’re the Voice”
The ONLY protest song in the entire season at a time when we need protest songs. Backup singers too heavy-handed.

    AMEN.

There were three contestants that auditioned with Crazy, right? Jason, DA, and one of the girls. I would love to hear their versions. Jason and David H. could have received some exposure during Hollywood week, but AI chose not to let us see them. I hope they improve next season.

He didn’t sound too worried about it. He has sung in public since and sounded fine. Is this career threatening? He mentioned it does make it more difficult to breathe.

Wadahoot – I agree somewhat with your assessment of David Cook’s diction.

Generally, he is actually quite precise with his diction, but the mumbling tends to be more evident when he sings lower or softer. I believe I have mentioned this several times in my VM articles.

Vocally – there is a solid techical foundation in his approach, but he does have to watch his upper level notes. His mouth is round and the jaw is relaxed, but there is still a great deal of facial tension.

The one thing I do like about David Cook is that he is an intelligent musician. Hopefully, he will transfer his intellectual approach to his singing in a way that will embrace consistently sound technique over the passage of time.

I agree, humans are odd. This AI season I often joked to my husband that Simon Cowell’s ears were in his back pocket. (If you know what I mean.) How could he say that “Think of Me” was “forgettable”?

And I have a great love of classical music — and a sister-in-law that can’t stand it! She loves country; me, not so much.

In the end AI came down to two very different musical styles. They should have a Rock Idol, a Pop Idol, a Broadway Idol….

MCL, is it true that one of DA’s vocal cords is not moving as reported by Janey79 from an interview she heard this morning? What does that mean? Is his problem returning? Is this something that will worsen? Tell us what you might know from your experience about such a situation. It frightens me to think about what it might mean for his future.

Love this site for the respectful commentary on all the contestants. It is somewhere I can come and know I won’t be offended or discouraged by the comments. Thank you, MCL, for keeping it so gracious and uplifting here.

I truly believe that David Archuleta was used by TPTB during the season. He did as no other contestant has ever done: On the 1st week of competition, he came out as the frontrunner. On the 2nd week, it was all but over. (Not to take anything away from DC. He proved he should be right there at the end, but he did not stand out to most people at this point.) AI had to keep the viewers interested, so the manipulation began. There were song clearance problems, interview editing, and, most damaging in my opinion, there were the unsubstantiated rumors that EVERYONE repeated as fact. Although there were some contestants on seasons of AI who had bad press, it was always because of something they did in their past that could have been considered controversial. David A himself did absolutely nothing to deserve it and yet he, a 17 year old, was called by the media some of the most cringe-inducing names I’ve ever heard.

That being said, David still came out on top. He is happy, grateful for his experience and positive about his future. His beautiful soul shines through. How else do you explain the passionate responses from his fans. He is something special. I am in my mid-thirties, have always appreciated good singing but have never been into American Idol and have never posted my opinions on any subject. I’ve been touched by an immensely talented 17 year old. That is a gift.

None of what happened above was DC’s fault. He is a gracious sweetheart who has embraced the sharing of the spotlight because IMO AI declared two winners this year. His talent is on par with DA’s and I wish the best for him. I may or may not buy his CD, but will keep an open mind and listen to some songs on it before deciding. I hope that fans of DC will do the same for David A. There is definitely enough room for both of them.

And, finally (I know this has been sooooo long), I hope Jason C, Carly and Michael all get record contracts.

“Jacko was too scared to sing

MICHAEL Jackson pulled out of a huge TV comeback – with stagefright.
Jacko, 49, was to sing live on the final of American Idol in front of a TV audience of 27 million.
But 24 hours before the show in Los Angeles he bottled out, saying: “I can’t do it. Everyone will hate me.” A source said: “This was his big chance but he got stage-fright.” Spice Girls guru Simon Fuller is helping Jacko with his comeback, say insiders.”

To those of you that have expressed concern for David’s vocal cord paralysis, I believe he was referring to the inital incident a few years ago, when a virus utilmately damaged one vocal cord.

He says that, through proper coaching, he combatted the inital vocal problems and actually can sing much higher now. Not surprising, since there is less muscle involved in the overall production of David’s vocal sound.

I am going to conduct more research into David’s problem, as I find it fascinating.

I also found this link that I thought many of you would fund interesting:

    http://www.gbmc.org/voice/anatomyphysiologyofthelarynx.cfm

Also, try not to worry about David. I feel that this was a rare health situation. Lightning cannot – and should not – strike twice.

We all have to pray that this crisis is behind him. His vocal gift is a gift from God – truly special.

I have badgered my students every week to watch American Idol because of David Archuleta.

In fact, both Davids were pretty consistent with their technique, but, in all my years watching this show, I have never seen a performer sing with such technical determination as little David. And he did so with sensitive artistry. Truly exceptional.

I don’t think David Cook was consistent at all with his technique. Sure, there were times when it was great but most through most of his performances, they were very forced & showed little emotion. David Archuleta is the better of the two by a million miles.

Hi, MCL! (I meant “close parenthesis”, but same difference!)

As I said, the MJ versions were pretty restrained. Here’s a link from a local (Utah, I think) radion station on the David A. concert cancellation from earlier in the day yesterday: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=3449555

According to that, 19E nixed the concert, because “no one on the “American Idol” tour is allowed to make a public appearance until after the concert has passed through the town.”

The Jason confirmation about the drumming axing was as low-key as you would expect, in answer to a query/comment on his latest blog entry (he didn’t bring it up):
“i had been talking about playing drums with a few contestants and the touring people but it doesnt look like it will be fitting into the set 😦 sad day!”
He doesn’t mention the duet at all. But both nixings were broadcast by “family friends” on IDF and DDB, as MJ reported. (But check out the MySpace page anyway–there’s a cute little video on the main page, among other updates.)

I do remember that Katharine McFee didn’t perform and that was disappointing, my daughter was a huge Taylor fan. Don’t get me started about how they’re selling tickets these days, I saw where a couple of the ticket places were selling premium seats before the pre-sale and I think that stinks. If you have any interest in going you can usually pick up some really good seats on Craig’s List or E-bay a day or two before any concert. It’s too crazy down on the floor for me so I prefer lower bowl as close to the stage as possible. I’m very happy with the seats I got this year and am very much looking forward to the concert.

    Masterclass lady,
I’m sorry if this is long, its my first time. I want to thank you for this blog. I have followed AI this season (never before)….because of David Archuleta. Have spent the whole season trying to figure out why a 38 year old would enjoy this 17 year old so much. I became so disheartened with the press and how they treated this 17 year old and became a “closet archuleta fan” because apparently a person my age should like Cook, not Archuleta. I find Cook talented, but not to my taste.

Then I found this site, where people could be kind about all the contestants. Recognize them for their strengths and graciously accept that other’s tastes may differ. I had hoped Cook would win, not just because just like DA I thought he deserved it, but because I hoped it would take the heat off DA. DAs treatment just seems so unfair. Even 2 weeks after the finale, the press continues to go after DA and his family. I don’t get it. I’d hate to see how he was treated if he won.

Thank you for this site. I come here now to read about DA and friends. Its a constructive and respectful site. All the comments are well placed and mature. And it makes me feel good other people respect this kid and what he has accomplished as much as I do.

I’ve been very curious what DA will chose to do. I thought I would share with your bloggers, there are two songs on You-tube sung by DA pre Idol that don’t seem well accessed. But I found them pleasant to listen to. I cant give you the link, cuz I’m not that sophisticated with the net. But if you search by Archuleta and “THe most beautiful part about this” and “angels in the alley way” you should find them.

I don’t cry often, and just found these pleasant, but on the third time through “The most beautiful part about this”…..my “gosh” “mann” beautiful.

I just wanted to share with some people that might actually appreciate it.

Thank you again for this blog

findacure-I am around your age and I too have spent a good deal of time trying to figure out why and how I could be moved by a 17 year old. I stopped trying after I saw that his fan base is not limited to an age group. David radiates goodness and light, all while singing with the voice of an angel. With wars, global warming, and the worries of the world, I think many of us crave beauty in the worlds and he makes us feel it and escape for a moment. I can’t even think of anyone else in recent memory who has accomplished this for me. I know to those who don’t get David it may sound “sappy”. Maybe there is someone who makes you feel this way as well?

Yes, I’ve thought of those reasons. And have also come to accept the fact that this kid inspires me on so many levels (yes sounds sappy). Perhaps he reminds me of a time when I believed in the goodness of people, the beauty of the world, and the simplicity of life…..before I became a jaded adult.

I seem to be going through some kind of AI withdrawl (also sappy). Thats why I’m pathetically living in YouTube and listening to all DAs songs….this one I found tonight….”The most beautiful part about this” just moved me in a way….havent felt for awhile. So yes, I’m very thankful for David Archuleta….even if he is 17. And I’m so glad that I can come to this blog….and fiind people who will let me say so, and its OK….and its not about some contest, just about appreciating a beautiful talent

His technical apporach is so brilliant and his artistry – equally so. Then, when you add his humble and sweet demeanor, you have a person who is truly special.

The longevity of his career is non-disputable; he is here to stay.

However, if David, as he so often has said in post-Idol interviews, decides to pursue the medical profession, his sensitivity, his intelligence and his dedication will be enormous attributes in the medical field.

It’s a win-win situation no matter what the future holds.

I find it amusing that people want to classify certain ages and types as the appropriate audience for any artist. I see no need to narrow a performers’ fanbase. After all, I like Elton John and Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift and the Beatles and …

Thank you for the kind reply. There were Season 5 concerts in Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse, believe it or not. However, this year, they only seem to be touring in Rochester, which is where I saw them. Like your daughter, I too am a Taylor fan, which really was the only reason I went. However, the night brought a surprise with it. During the season, I was not a Chris Daughtry fan, but when I saw him in person, I sure became one! I remember being mesmerized by him and yes, feeling somewhat guilty that (on that particular night anyway) I enjoyed him more than I did Taylor. Since we were in the front row, when a few of the Idols came off the stage and made their way down the front row line, we got to shake hands with them, so that was pretty cool.

Believe it or not, I’ve never been to the Jazz Festival. I detest traveling to Rochester, in particular, having anything to do with 490. You folks are crazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzy! (insert smiley) So generally, unless it’s something I REALLY want to go to, I tend to stay away. But from the sounds of it, you’ll have a good time for all of us, no doubt!

I knew about trying to secure tickets on Ebay, but had not heard of Craig’s list until you mentioned it. Thank you for the tip! I’ve saved it to favorites to remind me to go check it out a few days before the show to see if any tickets become available.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Have fun at the Festival!

MCL, you can find all of the studio versions on Youtube. Many of them are worth listening to. I personally find David Cook’s recordings incredible and am not surprised with his Itunes sales. Carly and David A also record nicely.

Lots of Archuleta love on this blog, but I still like it. LOL. There’s more Cook love on MJ’s so I hang out there more often, but I still appreciate the comments here.

There is a great deal of Archuleta love on this blog, but I think it is only because the David Cook fans found a home over at MJ’s.

I wish both of them tremendous success and happiness in the years ahead.

I am glad that you do come here and add your comments. Always appreciated! Next time, bring some more Cookie friends with you. 🙂

I’m late coming to this thread – it’s been a while since I checked in.

But here’s my “favorite moments” contribution.

Jason Castro – Daydream: I wasn’t expecting much because we didn’t know who he was, but boy did I sit up and take notice.

Jason Castro – Travelin’ Thru: This song seemed so true to Jason that I couldn’t help but love it even though it wasn’t an overly acclaimed performance. (Of course, Jason is the only one who knows if that song was true to him or not – but it seemed that way to me.)

David Cook – Always Be My Baby: I can’t stand Mariah Carey’s voice, and I’m not really into her sort of music. But I could listen to David Cook sing this over and over and over. And I have. Thanks to YouTube, I have been driving my husband crazy.

Josiah Leming – Grace Kelly: One of favorite performances on American Idol in all 6 seasons that I’ve watched.

Michael Johns – the Queen songs: Both times he did Queen, I was impressed. I adore Freddie Mercury, and I usually cannot accept other people’s versions of his songs. But I loved the Michael Johns versions.

Brooke White – Let it Be: Beautiful.

Chikezie – She’s a Woman: Crazy. And wonderful. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. Not quite as much of a shock as when Blake did Bon Jovi last year, but close.

There were several non-performance moments I loved as well.

I loved the Cook/Johns chest bump in one of the group numbers, Jason’s interview about hating interviews, Jason’s rambling when he was in the Bottom 3, and Danny Noriega’s “ish” moment.

MCL, thank you. I really enjoy your articles through the season. As a 38yr old married man, I can’t explain why I have been so affected by Archie’s music. I have never watched AI before. And I am not even a music fan, my last purchased CD was 15yrs ago, car radio set on news only channel. But since “Imagine” performance by Archie my life has changed. Now I own an IPOD and listen to Archie all the time.

I look forward to buying my first CD for a long time with Archie’s name on it. However, I am a little concerned about Archie signing under the umbrella of 19. AI is in ratings decline and they really need a commerically successful WINNER to revive the show. I think the last thing AI wants to see is Clay/Ruben situation to happen again. I am hoping 19 will not manipulate Archie’s success based on Cook’s. It’s unfortunate that this comparison will likely follow Archie for the rest of his career.

Archie is a gift from up high. And it’s exciting to see that he himself seems to know that. Looking forward to great things to come from him.

Be888, I wouldn’t worry about 19E trying to sabotage David Archuleta to somehow “assist” David Cook. Idol got REALLY lucky this year with their final 2 and have pretty much been promoting them both as winners: They’d be silly not to and I think they pretty much know a good thing when they see it! Both Davids were told that they’d be getting signed even before they performed for the last time on final 2 night, and that alone speaks volumes.

I also think that signing him with Jive was the way to go. Some fans think that Cook got the better deal in signing with RCA, but that’s not necessarily the case given the type of artists they are. Jordin was signed to Jive and she was last year’s winner, so I think it just depends on what is the better fit for the artist.

MCL, Pencils sharpened, ready to go. 4 weeks from today, can’t wait.

A technical question, if you have time to indulge me. Dean Kaelin, DJ’s voice coach said of his top 20 “Imagine” performance,”there was a slightly flat note that was caused by David reaching for the note and singing his vowel a little wide and he forgot to breath low so you could hear shallow, high breaths”. I was so immersed in the performance I didn’t catch the “slightly flat note”, did you?

btw, I didn’t think anything could replace top 20 “Imagine”, but the more I listen to top 2 “Imagine” the more amazing it gets. I was so emotional from “In this Moment” (still am, can barely get through it) I was wiped out by the time “I” came around. I little distance has allowed me to really appreciate this version in it’s own right.

Kathy- I absolutely love WYB studio, one of my favs along with SMM. Think of Me studio is good too.
The only thing I would of loved is if he used his falsetto in the studio version of WYB. But I dont think he even did the falsetto in the dress rehearsals before the live show(studios are done before that), at least thats what I heard. He wasnt sure if he was going to do it or not.

Janey- I absolutely love his finale performance of Imagine, more so than the first one. At least for me. I think its one of the ones you have to listen to it a few times first to really appreciate it. Especially if you are really familar with the first one. I have to say that last ‘as’ gets me everytime.

Sorry about the Internet probs, MCL. The Net can be a very tricky place.

I agree with frogcooke about David’s reprisal of “Imagine”. The first version had me jumping up and running closer to my big-screen TV. I just wanted to be as close to that sweet, pure voice as possible.

The second time he sang it, I was ON THE FLOOR! Not literally, but I was floored! This interpretation of “Imagine” proved David’s artistry. I just love it! David was brave to sing it again after it was such a big hit. In some places his vocals touched me even more. The ending is spectacular. It’s a very soulful, heartfelt version.

Wouldn’t it be great to sit in the studio while he is learning a song? I can imagine how he plays with lyric and music as he makes the song a David Archuleta signature piece. He is a stylistic master with a keen sense of timing, a perfect tone, and passionate delivery.

When are we going to hear his “Imagine” on the radio!!!??? I don’t understand — why not NOW!?

“I think anyone especially at this early stage of his soon-to-be huge career who is so identifiable with a sound like his is so far ahead of the game. There’s nothing copied by him – he’s totally original – as a matter of fact – it will be interesting to see after he puts a recording out there – who will be sound like HIM.”

This is a wonderful interview covering many questions I have had. How interesting that Michael cited Barry Manilow as his favorite mentor to work with; the same person so many of the contestants picked as their favorite.

I know David A. will be a huge success. He will still be around 10 years from now. All the comments are well worth reading.

MCL, I recall reading a critique on Elvis Presley. The commentator mentioned the vocal changes that take place in a young man’s voice. He described a developed richness in Elvis’ voice at age 25. Is this true of all male singers? Do females also go through a change in their voice as related to age. Is this what you expect will happen to David Archuleta?

    Good question, Kariann!

Both male and female voices develop a richer quality with time. The voice – both speaking and singing – naturally lowers with age. Many singers welcome this change; however, proper training will ensure that the voice will retain a healthy, youthful timbre.

A singer has to be careful to retain his or her upper register and never lose the head tone component when he/she sings. Otherwise, the voice sounds flat, nasal and lacklustre.

MCL, I have read your site for a while, and I have to say I really appreciate the way you are able to offer constructive criticism to the singers and yet always remain positive in tone. You are like Paula with substance!

I delurked because I was bothered by the implication in several posts in this thread that David Cook is a clearly inferior singer to David Archuleta. I simply do not feel this is the case. David Archuleta is not my “cup of tea” in terms of music style, but I acknowledge that he has a fantastic voice. I wish some of his fans could be similarly appreciative of David Cook.

I will not even factor in “extra-vocal” elements such as artistry, creativity, originality, musicality, stage presence, and emotional connection. But, simply in evaluating their singing, I see certain areas in which one David is superior to the other, and others in which the other David is superior

    Archuleta:

    1. voice purity (one of the purest voices I have ever heard)
    2. pitch-perfection

    Cook:

    1. raw power
    2. range (according to idolranges.com, his range is second only to that of Syesha)
    3. vocal versatility (able to adapt his voice to sing multiple styles/ musical genres)

Anyway, it irritates me that Cook’s singing ability sometimes gets short shrift. An argument can be made for either David as the “better” singer, but in any case, I do not believe the contest is clear-cut.

AgainstTheNight: I am so happy that you decided to leave your comments this time around. This site is a celebration of all things excellent in the music business and the two Davids definitely fit into that definitve category.

I always thought that David Cook brought very special performing and vocal qualities to his genre of music and I have had great respect for the technical manner in which he approached his vocal production.

More than any other rock singer that has ever appeared on AI or CI, for that matter, he has really attempted to sing his brand of music by employing sound technical skills and I applaud him for this very much.

Both Davids, I feel, are truly special and this is, in my opinion, the best Final 2 combo I have ever seen. But, then, that’s my opinion. I am sure many will disagree.

However, I also applaud you for appreciating David Archueta’s sublime vocal gifts, even though he is not your preferred David. That takes objectivity and grace.

I just don’t understand why everyone just can’t get along – the two Davids are like two brothers – shouldn’t we all follow their lead?

MCL, thank you for your reply. Both Davids are indeed are very special singers. Reading some of the comments from some of the Archuleta fans in this thread upset me, and that’s what prompted me to speak out.

Unfortunately, it is not only certain Archie fans who fail to give Cook the credit he deserves. Plenty of articles written about AI and the Davids seem to treat DC’s vocal ability as an afterthought. And I’ve even come across many Cook fans who make comments to the effect of, “well, he’s not the best singer of the group, but he’s the best all-around contestant.”

Worse yet, David himself does not seem to appreciate how gifted he is, based on the way he has put himself down vocally in comparison to the others from time to time in interviews. My guess is he does this because he doesn’t have the same belief in his own talent due to him never having received any formal vocal training, except for that which he picked up while participating in high school and college theater (obviously his theater instructors did a good job with him, though).

I believe several singers from this year’s group have areas in which they excel above the others, and nobody can definitively be called “best”. For example, Cook to me has the most versatile performance voice (for a fun exercise, listen to Billie Jean and Music of the Night (or better yet watch the performances) back-to-back and try to wrap your head around the fact that the same person is singing both songs!). Archuleta has the most pristene voice. Carly has the most powerful voice. And, although, he’s probably a few levels below the other three overall, Jason to me deserves acknowledgement for having the “sweetest” voice, especially in light of his very limited experience as a singer.

Thanks for the shoutout, MCL! Just another reason why I love this site 😉

I think the best part of this season of Idol, is that for me, it renewed my appreciation of good vocal performances. And this season showcased many different types of singers, all very good in their own way.

The only negative: the judges and the out-of-control media! Please, we can listen and figure out who we like and why. We don’t need the judges to make ridiculous comments. Nor do we need a media frenzy over unsubstantiated rumors. I am another one of those who will only be coming here for educated, rational, and positive critiques of the singers. Plus the fact that people posting here are very respectful of differing opinions.

Back to the good: both Davids! I love them both and can’t wait to hear their CDs. Both are wonderful artists. I’m surprised that I became of fan of David C.; David A. had me at “Shop Around”. For me, this really was the best season ever! Love, love, love: the Davids, Carly, Chikeze, and Michael.

…that is I…haha welcome to the space! you’ve caught me in a strange time…most of you probably know me from the show American Idol. i came in fourth place this last season and i am now on a nation wide tour playing in sold out arenas and i’ve never even released an album… isnt that rediculous?! haha so strange but i must say, its pretty fantastic! haha that is the amazing wonder of american idol, and that is where im at right now! traveling the country getting to meet all the lovely people who’ve had my back these last few months. yall are the best! 🙂 now some might ask, “what can we expect in the future?”. well let me tell ya. for one, i hope to find somebody that can help me right a cool bio because i am no good at this. haha and for two, i plan on releasing an album sometime winter/spring. i am currently writing in my spare time and plan on devoting all my energy to it once the tour is done. it is safe to assume that, like every other musician, i am obsessed with music . i have a simple goal, and that is to create songs that grab you by the soul and make you feel! songs that inspire! songs that give joy! songs that make you DREAM!!! if you’ve read this far, thankyou. i cant say thank you enough. thank you for your support and all of the love you have shown me. you are my inspiration, and for you i pour my life into this. heart and soul baby! we’re in this for life.

don’t stop dreaming, never stop believing.

Frankly, I’m impressed. I cannot offhand recall any American Idol producing so much buzz without first being signed and without the accompanying professional management company putting it together–Jason is doing this by himself (with family and friends), since he is not permitted to sign with any other management until 19E formally passes on their option, which they haven’t done.

Parenthetically, while the former copyeditor in me cringes, the rest of me thinks he should leave the bio just the way it is…no one else is going to put together something that sounds so much like him. But, based on results, he does know best in these matters!

Is Jason adorable or what? He is a genuine free spirit and I cannot wait to listen to that wonderful CD you sent me, Rereader. Then I can add a post dedicated to sweet Jason and his music.

Give me another few days and I will be totally free. Lots of visitors in town for the Canada Day bash, so it’s kept me busy – but in a fun way!

She is five years old, has long blond hair *usually in pigtails ,hazel eyes and is short. ReReader – I am around. Just been busy with company. I do plan to add an Idol thread about the tour and will try to keep it current throughout the summer.

Then, it’s on to my Jason Recording Masterclass from the CD your did send me. Oh, I also received Archie CDs from another fan, so I will be busy, won’t I?

Sweet Jason – he sounds so excited. I cannot wait to see him perform in Toronto. what a neat Top 10, huh?

You never bug me. I love all of these Jason updates and feel a bit guilty for not being “on top of things” here.

However, it’s Canada Day here and I have to run and make a celebratory supper for my family.

    HI to you too Wadahoot!

Woah! It’s like these kids can’t breath without 19’s permission. It’s really pretty sick … I mean, Jason is trying to keep fans by interacting with them, and is (potentially) being shot down for it. Weird. Methinks TPTB sometimes can’t see the forest for the trees.
