Rumour has it that Canadian Idol is looking for a certifiable rockstar this year. I don’t know if this is true, but, if so, then they are definitely making a smart move in the right direction. Canadian Idol has yet to crown a genuine rockstar as the winner in any season and, although Season 2 winner Kalan Porter favours rock music, I find that his overall look, personality and voice are far too refined for this genre of music.
We have had spinoff Idol rockstars, however – those that have made the Top 10 but never won the actual title, such as Season One finalist Billy Klippert and Season 2 finalist Jacob Hoggard. So, if Canadian Idol finds the real deal this year in this genre of music, they may just hit gold.
For some reason I am looking forward to this year’s competition. I intuitively feel that this year’s show is going to be excellent (and no – I do not know anyone associated with the Top 200 this year). It’s just a Masterclass instinct.
Here is this year’s schedule:
Premieres Tuesday, June 5 with 90-minute audition episode, 8:00 – 9:30 p.m. (featuring Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Winnipeg, St. John’s and Halifax)
Continues Tuesday, June 12 with 90-minute audition episode, 8:30 – 10 p.m. (Saskatoon, Montreal, Vancouver and London)
Top 200 episodes air Monday, June 18 from 9-10 p.m. and Tuesday, June 19 from 8:30 – 10 p.m.
Top 22 performance episodes air Mondays/Tuesdays from 9 – 10 p.m. beginning June 25
Top 22 results episodes air Wednesdays from 7:30 – 8 p.m. beginning June 27
Top 10 week one airs Tuesday, July 17 from 8:30 – 10 p.m. and Wednesday, July 18 from 7:30 – 8 p.m.
Top 10 shows move to their regular timeslot on Mondays from 9 – 10 p.m. and Tuesdays from 8:30 – 9 p.m., beginning July 23

MCL, I’m quite excited to hear that you’re critiquing this season’s Canadian Idol. I have thoroughly enjoyed your critiques of season one and two of CI, and I’m glad that you’re back for season 5!

Beth – I am excited for this season as well. The last two seasons I was not able to provide Masterclass articles because of personal scheduling problems, but I am happy to be on Board this season
Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Rosanne:
That was a good intro. to the new season of Canadian Idol.
As for rockers, I would have loved to have seen Billy Klippert, Lucas Rossi, and J.D. Fortune up against oneanother for a rocker win on Canadian Idol. We have some top-notch rocker talent in Canada.
Regards,
James

Hey James!
So good to see you here. I heard via contestants that did not make the cut that they were looking for a rocker this year.
And the addition of instruments throughout the Idol auditions were very welcomed by the judges.
On one audition day the celebrity judges selected one person – a guy who played guitar – out of 60 singers who auditioned in Toronto.
