David Cook’s Digital Vein Album Strikes The Perfect Chord.

 David Cook, Digital Vein
I may be too late to the Digital Vein’s CD Release Party which happened on September 18th 2015 but it doesn’t mean that I don’t care or appreciate everything David Cook has to offer to the music world.

I certainly do – very much so.

And, with the release of his 4th album, Digital Vein, we are blessed with the heart and soul of what makes David such a special and singular musician in today’s music scene.

Make no mistake about it – David never was, is or every will be a cookie-cutter artist.  This is why he left RCA in 2012 and firmly planted his feet in the musically fertile world known as Nashville Tennessee. It may have been a scary and, oftentimes, lonely process for the normal musician but, for someone like David – who likes to maintain perfect control over the details surrounding the production of his music -, this change of pace was the perfect fit.

According to David’s Wikipedia Page,  David stated:

My last independent record, back in 2006, was Analog Heart, and after my major-label journey, with circumstances being what they are, this record is certainly a progression. I don’t think it’s very much like Analog Heart at all, but the process of putting it together was similar in the sense that I worked with a very small team, and I put a lot of myself into every aspect of it. It felt like a throwback in that regard, so I wanted the two records to be connected, if only in name.”

The songs on this album are heaped with the maturity and professionalism we have come to expect from David. His voice sounds super  – always focused and free and yet rich and robust. He values every aspect of the technical process and it shows via the seamless, liberated quality of his vocal delivery. And his articulation is precise, yet nuanced.

David co-wrote these songs in collaboration with well-known songwriters – Blair Daly, Zac Maloy, Kevin Griffin, Chad Carlson and David Hodges.  They took their time and it shows. It’s not about churning out whatever pops in to your head with your eye on a timeline.

No. It is not.

Rather it is about respecting the process and allowing the music to come first and the message to resonate from within your soul. This is what creates great songs, ones that will last for a lifetime and make sense as the years carry on.

David is presently on a very busy Digital Vein tour and, quite possibly, will be heading toward a city near you. You will be doing yourself a huge favour by attending one of his concerts, because David has grown exponentially since his American Idol Season 7 days.   Even then, he always was a bright, articulate and creative artist and these attributes have intensified over the last 8 years.

Digital Vein is available now for download iTunes or Amazon and for streaming on Apple Music

  10. Thank you so much Masterclass for this great review. Digital Vein by David Cook is a brilliant masterpiece as was This Loud Morning ( which went over the heads of most DJs and most powers that be (including RCA). But this time around, more people have taken a notice to the brilliant Talent (all around Talent) that is David Cook. To really appreciate this artist and his brilliance – you must or should go to one of his “live” shows. He will blow you away ………… David Cook is the BEST! I hope you get a chance to listen to the hidden bonus tracks on the Deluxe album and Walmart Exclusive of Digital Vein – “Where Do We Go”, “Firing Squad”, “But You Won”t”, and “We’re Not In This Alone” are killer songs. I would love you to do a song review, thanks again

  13. I await in anticipation your track by track review of this record, MasterClass Lady. David has always said it’s all about progression, and I think you’ll find as you listen to the songs on this record, he has progressed vocally, musically, and as a songwriter. The production on this album is stellar, especially on Better Than Me, one of the only songs he didn’t write. He has a wonderful sense of the less is more school of production. I love this song for the fact that he has presented himself in a very different way, much more mature, almost jazz-based, the result is unlike anything he’s ever done post-Idol. I’d like to hear more of this style from him. I’d like your opinion on that song in particular MCL. I supported, as did many others, his Pledge Music campaign while he was in post-production on this record. When I learned the title of the record I admit I made the immediate connection to Analog Heart. As I posted on the comments page, the circle is now complete.
I saw David in concert on Oct. 21st in Minneapolis, and I totally enjoyed the evening. As others have said above, he’s terrific live. The fact it was a small venue with only 300 people, made it warm and intimate, and I will cherish that he did Better Than Me live. A moment I won’t forget.
