American Idol Season 10 Premiere Does A Solid

Last evening, I was extremely surprised with the premiere of American Idol. It was a well-paced, intelligent evening of pure entertainment.

Returning judge, Randy Jackson, was a comforting presence alongside new judges, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. All three judges displayed just the right amount of tact, humor, empathy and professionalism when dealing with the contestants.

Ryan Seacrest‘s involvement was just wonderful. He had a very genuine approach to the singers and their family members and connected to their journey with honesty and encouragement.

Case in point: his approach to the tragic story of 16-year-old singer, Travis Orlando. As mentioned by Randy Jackson, Ryan became misty-eyed upon learning about Travis’ success at receiving a gold ticket to Hollywood. Travis’ story touched him in a monumental way. I know I felt his pain. What a tough road this young man endured with his family.

Travis’ story reminds all of us that American Idol can be the start of a new and exciting life for so many singers. To be born with a prolific talent is a gift from God that should be shared with millions and American Idol is a strong vehicle toward achieving this reality.

Tonight’s show focuses on the New Orleans auditions. I can’t get enough of this show this season. That has to be a good omen, correct?

Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler. She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8. In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman. In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins. In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright. In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins. Under Rosanne Simunovic’s direction, the Timmins Youth Singers and the Timmins Concert Singers have been featured in numerous choral festivals and performing opportunities outside of Timmins.     I thought it was a great start, too. Steven Tyler has a great sense of humor. Jennifer Lopez is sweeter than I thought she could be. She seems to really want to bring out the best in the contestants. Randy is, well, Randy. He’s the dry, quiet humor/straight man. I’m glad they didn’t do too much with the embarrassing ones. There were some really great stories. I loved the 16 year old from North Carolina. If anyone could be groomed for success, she can. She seems to have talent, pizazz, presence, and most importantly, the ability to take direction tempered with a strong personality.

    I really like it too. I also thought Jennifer is sincere and really very sweet. Tyler is funny and also sincere. The dawg is well, the dawg. Now he is the top dawg and not shadowed by what his name? oh yeah. Simon. (smile) The show is usually all about Simon and I really didn’t notice the difference until the new panelists came on. I am happy about a lot of GOOD singers instead of going thru ones who are being made fun of and not knowing it and to laugh shamelessly with Simon’s cutting to the bone remarks.

    Hi everyone! I have been busy this week having my almost 3 year-old Granddaughter staying with me. We are having a great time! However, my spare time is sparce.

    I am just enjoying American Idol so much. steve is doing an excellent (crazy) job and Jennifer will toughen up as a judge. Randy is even added new vocabulary to his comments. There have been some terrific contestants. I am defintely impressed with 15 tear-old Jaycee Badeaux. I am sure Idol will do a make-over on him and he’ll be heading for the TOP 20. Rachel Zevita has a lovely voice, but there are several others to watch.

    I notice they haven’t featured Ryan too much. I have great hope for the show and do not miss Simon. The best is yet to come!
