Well, in just 48 hours or so, the musical ride called American Idol will begin its eighth successful season. I am waiting with bated breath to see how the producers and judges are going to top the magic and charisma of the Top 12 singers from Season 7. It won’t be easy, but they have planned a few changes along the way.
First of all is the inclusion of singer-songwriter, Kara DioGuardi, as a judge, along with regulars Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. I am sure that her industry experience and success as a songwriter will add another important dimension to the show’s judging panel. It is my hope that she will intuitively guide the singers through the song selection process – one of the most important elements, if not THE most important element to accomplish on this extremely competitive show.
And this season, American Idol is modifying the 24 semi-finalist performance show format and expanding the number to 36 semi-finalists. The 36 singers, selected by all four judges after the Hollywood round, will be revealed mid-February.
In addition to this, the judges and producers are bringing back the very popular Wild Card round, therefore allowing a select group of eliminated singers a second chance to earn a place in the the Top 12. I always enjoyed the Wild Card round – it adds an element of surprise to the show and, at times, can make a monumental difference in the success of the Top 12 lineup. Good call!
Below, you will find an image from American Idol.Com’s spiffy new website. It should answer all of your questions until the show airs and starts to become cohesive in our minds. Time to wipe the slate clean and see what America has to offer in the new crop of talent for the 2009 season.

Thank you MCL for your part in bringing back the music into our lives. Though I will not be one to “wipe the slate clean” – you know what I mean – ha ha , I do look forward to what the new season has in store for us. I hear that there will be some pleasant surprises.

haha I know what you mean, ArchieFanDoc. I keep thinking that, come Tuesday, I will see Archie’s sweet face once again and hear his gorgeous voice on a weekly basis. I will miss him, as well as Cookie’s stellar approach to the rock genre and Jason’s sweet, folksy vibe.
Then there is Carly and Michael Johns – two fabulous singers who should have been discovered a long time ago. Carly was – but I cannot believe that her distinct, powerful voice could not catapult her to stardom with the help of a major label. Seems strange and disjointed to me.

I will miss last season, too, MCL!! And I honestly do not want a girl winner this season. I’ve heard the guys stand out more than the girls according to Simon.

I think it is definitely going to be hard to top last season’s group – although you just never know what surprises are lurking out there…
I will miss Archie and Cookie very much! Thankfully, I have Archie’s CD that I can put on should I find myself extremely disappointed from this Season – ha! (I must go out and get Cookie’s so I can do the same…)

I also think it is going to be difficult to top Season 7. Yes, it is possible to get a few singers with more talent than 3-4 contestants that made the TOP 12. However, that would not necessarily make a better season.
There was something VERY special about this group of TOP 12. There was a charisma and chemistry existing within the group. If there were any bad feelings between them, we were not made aware of it.
Many weeks, the group performances were entertaining because of their unique delivery of song and dance.
The talents of David C. and David A. were enormous. The gentleness and vulnerability of Jason and Brooke provided some of the best moments of the season for me.
Yes, I am excited but cannot imagine loving anyone as much as I loved Jason Castro (and Anthony before him)!

MCL you have no idea how hard it is for me not to send you all the vids from David’s performance tonight at the Hard Rock Cafe in NYC. But I couldn’t stop myself from sending you this one. David sings I’ll Be, unplanned, unrehearsed and a cappella…hi def and full screen for maximum enjoyment…

Janey – thank you for sending this. and please – ever hesitate to send along anything that features David A. I love him to death and this a cappella version of “I’ll Be” just fortifies the admiration I have for him as a consummate singer and musician. He is just outstanding and always so sensitive in his musical approach.

I’m so happy to read that you’ll be reviewing Jason’s music this week. But, make sure to watch Idol on Wednesday. Jason’s brother, Michael, will be shown auditioning in Kansas City. And, Jason was there for moral support. Can’t wait!
