Vocal MasterClass Discussion For The Voice Season 14: The Live Top 11 Perform Your Favorite Songs

Well, this should be fun tonight. The Top 11 will be performing your song suggestions.

And, after last week’s Wikipedia reveal, I decided to stay away from that site because it cannot be trusted. Or can it? Oh my – so many conspiracies so little time. Ha!

The Voice airs on NBC on Monday, April 30th and Tuesday, May 1st.

Anyway, enjoy the show everyone and let’s keep the conversation flowing in the comments section.

Later all!

  1. Both Jackies, side by side, in the same shot. How did they do that?

  2. Gene, haha, they even had them standing beside of each other…😳 What?! I feel like the red m&m on the Christmas commercial when he see’s Santa! There really are two Jackie’s 😳😲😮 and I think someone’s on to us! They know, that we know, about the conspiracy!!! 😱

Oh what a night…some of the fan picked songs worked and some didn’t, some I’m wondering, why?

  3. “They know, we know” Ha Ha Ha

Yeah some of the contestants were hurt by the fan’s choice. I wasn’t happy at all with them giving “You and I” to a barely 15 year old Brenn. Not only was it inappropriate but it wasn’t a great song for her either.

Christina, Sharane and Spensha weren’t helped by their songs.

Pryor was ok and the song suited him well but he tends to over sing, which he did again tonight

Both of the Jackies were good and Kyla was a lot of high energy fun.

Rayshun was singing one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite singers and he tried not to over embellish it, but between moving like an Al Jolson and holding back as long as he could, I have to give him just an ok. Just sing Otis Redding like Otis Redding did it and you will be ok.

Britton was probably the star of the show tonight.

  4. MCL, I went and took a peek at the wiki reveal, no bottom two announced, but oddly, Pryor and Britton have “yellow” highlights…meaning Winner! Haha

    Gene,

I didn’t have a standout performance last night. There’s a couple that I really wanted to love, but just couldn’t get passed the song choice.

Looking at the iTunes vote, the bottom three’s going to look a little different tonight…or is it??? 🤔

Pryor’s song suited him, it was okay for me; I would like to hear him sing a Michael McDonald song.

Kyla, Love her, didn’t like the song; with a world full of songs, couldn’t anyone think outside of the box for her. I would love to hear her tackle an Adele song, like Hello or Someone Like You.

Britton didn’t wow me again, he has the voice, song choice is going to be the thing for me. I would love to hear him sing Rhianna’s Stay, but the Jared Leto version.

Country Jackie, sounded good last night, it was again, song choice. She would do great singing an Allison Krauss song.

Rocker Jackie, should have sang a Heart song, any Heart song.

Sharane’s song was too big for her, she has a great voice, she has a softer tone, kind of like Janet Jackson.

Christina, Rayshun, Brynn and Spenshia, agree, song choice, wasn’t my favorite performance’s.

Kaleb, I couldn’t understand a word he sang.

  6. I may need to rant..I think it shows great disrespect to the contestant going home when the judge gets up celebrating their contestant being saved, before the judge of the one going home has a chance to console their contestant…rant over! I used the word contestant a lot, didn’t I 🤔😳

  7. Wow, what a group number from Team Alicia. They finally showed “Thigh Boot Jackie” as a rocker. “Kind of Country Jackie” was the standout in the Team Adam group performance.

No real surprise on the elimination.

DWTS is having a weird season this time. Just four weeks and all of the contestants are athletes. Add the drama of Tonya Harding and the even more obnoxious Bruno and it kind of takes the fun out of it.

Vonnie, Tony Jackson is coming to town in July. You might want to check his tour schedule if you are interested in seeing him. Tickets here are just $10.00.

I saw Paul Thorn, “King of the Flatheads” again last week. That boy ain’t right!

  9. Gene,

Are you going to see Tony Jackson, gosh, I love that boy! I think he has some summer dates here at some of the venues he played before he made it big. 😃

We finally have a few new venues open that showcase local artists, Virginia is now the east coast Napa Valley, vineyards everywhere, many of them are hosting music events on the weekends, everyone seems to be very receptive and packing the house each weekend. We have some great local bands and artists.

I went last Saturday to hear my nephew play with his high school band for “Jazz In The Park” he plays piano, they were great. He sure can tickle some ivory, that boy is going places! He plays in a group of about 10 I think, they are a pretty tight group, couple of those boys can get er done on the horns.

  12. Vonnie,
I’m kicking it around. I haven’t bought tickets but 10 bucks is hard to pass up. It’s also hard to ignore his list of mentors, Vince Gill, Steve Cropper and John Sebastian. Maybe some of them will slip onto the stage. This place is one of the larger of the small venues. Maybe 1000 capacity with a higher end (stacked food) restaurant attached. I’ve seen Greg Allman, BB King and Grace Potter, at this venue, so it’s “that” size. He has also done some of the Country music package cruises. I think the established artist are reaching out to promising black artist in the country genre as we can see this season with Blake and Spenshia. I haven’t found Spenshia to be at the same level as Tony Jackson but she is a very nice lady with an attractive personality so I hope Blake will continue to work with her.

  15. Vonnie,
The Jazz in the Park sounds fun. I’m glad to hear your nephew is in to it. Years ago when my daughters were young we used to go to Pops in the Park presented by the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. It was in a large park downtown made famous during the Civil Rights era and was well attended by the public, many who like us had small children. We loved it. In that close environment, under the trees in the open air, the instruments have such an individual yet collective voice. That was when I realized that the conductor was actually playing one huge instrument with his little baton. Really good stuff, I know you must be enjoying it as well.

You mentioned Pryor singing a Michael McDonald. I’m losing confidence in Pryor. There are a lot of folks he could cover if he could get control of his voice. He is wide open all the time. I feel like I’m being sand blasted with rasp after one of his songs. It’s similar to the R& B singers who embellish every syllable. It just wears you out. I think he has better in him.

I try not to compare these young singers to the original artist but I do like to consider that if this contestant had been the original artist of this song, would anyone remember it today? It helps me distinguish between who is special and who is just another talented singer.

  16. Idol Girl,

I always seem to forget about Brynn and then hear her sing and am like, “yeah, I like her voice”. She hasn’t had that breakthrough moment for me yet, maybe it’s song choice. I was leaning towards Britton as the front runner, he seems to be popular with the tweens; the kids got swag for sure, a James Dean vibe. It’s song choice for him also, if he sang Jared Leto’s version of Stay, I think he would do very well. For some odd reason this year, it seems as if each team emulate’s each other, same singers different names; Eh, maybe I’m just getting old and cynical 😳

    Gene,

I am with you on Pryor, he has one speed, although, I think Blake sees that and is trying to get him to back off the throttle some.

I think some songs it’s hard not to compare, I tend to compare it in a sense that if you’re going to sing Whitney, Adele, Mariah, you better have the chops to do so. The little girl who just left got stuck with a horrible song choice, I feel really bad for her, but I blame Adam for that, they could have totally changed the arrangement to suit her softer tone.

I didn’t get to watch the group songs last night, floor board Freddie had us on fast forward, he had some show he wanted to watch, so I got to see the end of the show, lol, he said, “it’s taped you can watch it later”? 🤔

  17. Aw thank you Gene. Truthfully, I have been so busy with family obligations. I will try to add my two cents at some point. I think everyone here prefers The Voice to American Idol? Am I correct?

    Gene,

You will have to share your thoughts on Tony Jackson if you go…$10 bucks though, why not?!? He does have a few shows somewhat close to me, I may have to go see him.

  19. MCL,
I prefer The Voice. I tried to watch Idol this season and it wasn’t for me. They do have a few interesting contestants this season though.

The Voice still has some issues to work out. We will see how this season works out as far as the mass cuts that they have made in the past. I would like to hear more honest commentary from the coaches as well. They also need to make an honest effort to promote the winner, as well as stand out contestants, after the season is over. They never have done much to promote the winner but even worse, most are cut from the original label without having recorded an album.

I like the broader range of contestants on The Voice and the show’s willingness to try new things to refine the show.

I don’t think Idol will return to major popularity as long as Caty Perry is on the judges panel. She is a huge negative. Luke Bryan is sort of neutral, adding nothing to the show and Lionel Richie is a keeper.

Both shows need to work on being more family friendly. The cursing and sexual innuendo are unacceptable. These shows can benefit from the star power of major celebrities with being about those celebrities.

  20. Vonnie,
I think Brynn became the front runner during the blind auditions. I think her audition came before Britton’s. It was pretty impressive for a fourteen year old girl, both as a singer and as a performer as well as her poise and composure in general. Not to mention she is a very attractive young lady.

Britton has also so been very impressive since his audition. He is a very skilled performer as well as a appealing singer. My guess is they are the top two unless maybe Jackie Thigh Boots begins slaying it in the next few rounds.

They are failing, for me anyway, in the iTunes department and that could determine who wins. An entertaining performance doesn’t necessarily translate into a download sale.

  22. I moved on from American Idol after the original judges panel left. Like Gene, I like the broader range of contestants on The Voice and that the show does new things to keep the show fresh. Promoting the winner afterwards is an area the show and label need to work on.

  24. One of the reasons I’m thinking that Brynn is going to be one of the finalists is because she’s one of the leaders on social media. https://idolchatteryd.com/brynn-cartelli-britton-buchanan-still-top-the-voice-on-social-media/
