MasterClass Monday: SNL’s Kate McKinnon and Comedian Dave Chappelle Sum Up The Election Through Words And Music

First of all, I would like to extend my congratulations to Donald Trump and his supporters for capturing the title of the 45th Presidency of the United States by receiving the majority of the Electoral College votes.

However, those who know me or follow me on Facebook know I was rooting for Hillary Clinton. She embodies a stellar work ethic and an inner strength that spoke to the masses and, for that reason, she won the Popular Vote. 

And, it  continues to grow.  She is winning it by a margin larger than Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy, both of whom went on to win the presidency.  That is pretty remarkable and she can take solace and comfort in this important victory. 

I was curious to see how Saturday Night Live was going to address the outcome of this election. Would Kate McKinnon, who impersonated Hillary Clinton over the last few weeks, have a meltdown?  How about Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trumps’s impersonation?  Surely, they were expecting a Hillary win. All the polls indicated this result. So much for polls. 

However,  in the wake of Hillary Clinton ‘s surprising Presidential defeat, comedy took a backseat to poignancy, and the messengers – Kate McKinnon and Dave Chappelle – delivered performances which were absolutely brilliant. Brilliant! 

Sometimes, the world and God works in very mysterious ways. With the passing of Leonard Cohen on November 10th, two days after the election, the melding of Cohen and Clinton into one potent performance of the former’s most famous song, “Hallelujah“, was an act of genius. It was as if the song was written for this particular event in Presidential history. Kate McKinnon  sang from her heart, tears in her eyes. Whether you were a Hillary supporter or not, one could not help but be moved and then energized with her resounding message at the end of the song. 

And then out popped comedian Dave Chappelle who mixed some humour with a more sober approach in addressing the election of Donald Trump as President.  Just as Kate McKinnon’s song struck a chord, so did Dave Chappelle’s words.

About Masterclass Lady

Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler. She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8. In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman. In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins. In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright. In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins. Under Rosanne Simunovic’s direction, the Timmins Youth Singers and the Timmins Concert Singers have been featured in numerous choral festivals and performing opportunities outside of Timmins.     I can only speak for myself, but I am glad that the American people chose a different direction. After the past 8 years with a president that did nothing for this country, by Hillary getting elected we would have seen the same exact thing. She would have followed in his footsteps.. I think it is time for people to move on and accept a leader and businessman……. One thing he wont do is sugar coat things and speak

    As for Hilary Clinton, in my eyes she was a liar and a very mean woman….. The only time that I have ever seen what I thought was in anyway compassionate from her was her concession speech. I have never disliked someone so much as her. Some of the mean spirited things she has said in the past and about former presidents was appalling….

    And if anyone had listened to or read online from the Professor Allan Lichtman who has predicted the last 30 years of presidential elections correctly called the win for Trump in September. And he does his analysis by projections that are based on a unique system that relies on 13 True/False questions, or “keys,” to evaluate the strength of the incumbent party.

    I just hope that his chance is to show the American people that he can change things for the better…….

    Richard – I will respectively disagree with you about President Obama. I think he made enormous changes – all positive – for the country in the face of the disaster set before him by the Republicans in 2008. He would have made more of an impact if the Republicans had not blocked him any chance they got.

    Hillary Clinton, like all of us, has made mistakes. Welcome to the world of being a human being. But her mistakes pale in comparison to the divisive role Trump played in order to be elected as President.

    Change is good but this is a change in the wrong direction. I know you will disagree with all of this so I feel like my words are falling on deaf ears. Let us see what the next four years bring us.

    That is right lets see what the next four years will bring to us….. I totally agree with you that we are human and make mistakes, but does not give someone like her the right to talk badly and ill mannered of any former president.. And let’s face it no president republican or democrat has the power that the Senate and House do….. The government is for the government…….. Also Roseann, nothing falls on deaf ears with me, i give everyone the benefit of the doubt.. And now I find it rather appalling that I am now reading that Obama told the UK news that Hillary was part to blame for losing the election. Talk about calling the kettle black, when him and his wife were so strongly for her……. Everyone has the right to be given a chance, it is not easy job to fill, he now has to deal with the last 8 years and hopefully correct things that were put in place….. I work in the medical insurance industry and the Obamacare is a mess, that is a plain fact……
