  1. Last night I liked, Mary Sarah, Adam, Laith, and Hannah!

How many goes home tonight? I think Nick will go home and if it is more than one, Paxton and/or Shayla!

  2. I thought I heard Carson say one goes home this week, forming a top 8. My guess is Nick.

Based on the iTunes results this season, who wins is anyone’s game.

  3. My favorites were Hannah and Adam.

  4. I was very happy to see Hannah saved first. I really like Hannah. I didn’t really care for the song but it was a good vehicle for her and a huge improvement over Rolling in the Deep from last week.

I’m also glad to see a blues artist doing as well as Laith has so far this season. I’m afraid that they will continue to push him toward a more mainstream pop / rock style but there is always a market for a blues artist if you like to perform for a very loyal, but somewhat stagnant fan base. There is more money to be made crossing over to rock. He has an issue with his voice that you can hear if you listen to his iTunes samples with ear phones. It sounds like he is gargling his tonsils!

Adam made a good song choice, a favorite of mine from both Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. It was entertaining but I thought he missed the emotional component of the song. I like most of the song choices he has made during the competition I suspect that the Blake connection may land him on the outlaw (Travis Tritt) side of country instead of the southern rock to pop (think Greg Allman to Michael McDonald) range that he seems more suited to.

I’m still waiting for Mary Sarah to live up to her potential. She has the look, a degree of star power, and an interest in real country music and a decent voice. She has some pitch issues though. She gave a good performance last night, maybe her best, but the song isn’t a favorite.

I thought last week was going to be a turning point for Alisan. She was beginning to discover nuance and that every note doesn’t have to be a glory note. I actually liked her performance last week. This week the right foot was fully to the floor board again. Last week must have been a fluke.

Shalyah deserves an honorable mention for throwing her heart into a performance. With further development she may make something of herself in a few years.

  5. Gene,

    I agree with your critique!

I hope Paxton returns to his lane and sings a contemporary Christian song next week. I find at times Mary Sarah emulates Carrie Underwood to a degree that I lose who she is as an artist. I think Blake needs to direct her back to her blind audition and regroup. Allison this week really bent my ears, it was painful. I blame Christina for that, she confuses shouting/screaming with singing…they both could take some lessons from Allison Kraus, less is definitely more! Still waiting for Adam to sing Simple Man, I like his voice, but he just seems so smug. Laith, just seems like a hard worker and so down to earth.

Who’s going to win? I agree with idol girl, who knows at this point. I think they would like us to believe that Allison is the front runner, but I think she is behind more than one in line for that coveted spot!

  6. Good comments, Gene and Vonnie!

“Nuance” is definitely what Allison needs to learn. And Vonnie’s comment about Adam being “smug” could also, in my opinion” apply to Allison. It was a little obnoxious to comment about ranking on I-tunes right under Beyonce.

And I am still waiting for Mary Sarah to sound as good as she did doing “Where the Boys Are.”

At this point, I’m also hoping for a Hannah win.

  7. I agree with your remarks as well Vonnie. Paxton had a big moment with his Christian contemporary song. If that is his genre, that’s how he should compete.

I really like Laith. I appreciated him doing BB King last week although I prefer BB’s approach to Blues guitar. Laith is an excellent guitarist, and kudos go out to the Fender custom shop for the work in his most excellent Telecaster, but BB used his guitar (Lucile) like another voice that he was singing a duet with in a call and answer style. I think that style would be more appropriate on a show called “The Voice” but I still like what Laith offers. There may be a cure for the issue he has with his voice. I haven’t noticed it on TV but it really jumps out on his recordings.

Mary Sarah needs to get back to what she does well but

Christina and holleration. Yeah, I think Boo Boo has a lot of potential but I don’t care for the path she is on even though she has sung some of my favorite songs while she has been on The Voice. Christina is one of the culprits but I think there are other forces at The Voice who are into holleration besides her. We have heard Pharrell encourage his contestants in that direction in the past but fortunately he seems to have backed away from that approach this season. I think maybe the producers encourage the “big show” approach and may push it through their vocal coaches. Who knows? For the most part, I’m a less is more guy too. Can you imagine Allison Kraus as a guest mentor on this show? (I can’t!)

I don’t know who will win, I’m just enjoying the performances. Boo Boo was a shoe in from the beginning but there are several contenders and maybe a black horse or two.

How about DWTS? They have quite a competitive season going there as well. As I type this Derick Hogue just appeared on Nashville. Small world. I like Paige VanZant, who Mark is dancing with. She needs to pursue a career as an action actress. Nyle along with Peta continue to impress. Who do you like at this point?

  8. Louise,
I just saw your comments and I agree with all that you said. I would love to see Hannah win. I can almost see that happening but she is who I foolishly refereed to as a “black horse” but should have said dark horse. Her first place save was very encouraging though.

Alisan does seem sort of full of herself, doesn’t she?

Mary Sarah performed Where the Boys Are on her album Bridges along with Neil Sedaka who wrote the song. Her audition knocked my socks off but, like you, I would like to see her at that level again.

Who do you like at this point on DWTS?

  9. Being into rock, I loved Allison’s performance this week.

  10. interesting, me being into rock too, i didn’t like allison’s performance. i guess i just don’t really care for her. i don’t know if i’d like her better if she was not with christina. i agree that allison seems a bit full of herself, but interesting, the beyonce comment i didn’t see as being full of herself. i saw it as being very honest and amazed, like..’holy cow, beyonce, beyonce, me, beyonce, beyonce. seeing those 9 million songs of beyonce’s like that, i thought, there is no way a Voice person will crawl into that.

funny story: i am a big library person. i often get cd’s. i’d just picked up a Jose Feliciano cd, i’d had on reserve and put it into my cd player in the car. from the very first note i thought ‘huh??’, has feliciano gone through a transformation!!?? it turned out that although the cd had the right container, and the right label, it was an aerosmith album. i actually ended up listening to and enjoying the whole thing. i just really thought that was funny. i will hope they will put me to the top of the feliciano reserved list though..i go back tomorrow.

  11. i don’t know what christina is trying to do, showing her plastic bosoms as she does. 😦 i do not think she is happy there. it is interesting to watch her expressions, it is like when the camera passes her she drops all the pretense, not knowing the camera is still on her.

  12. Hi, Gene,
To answer your question about DWTS, I don’t honestly have a favorite, but I continue to be amazed by Nyle. Otherwise, of the remaining contestants I like Paige and Ginger equally. You’re right about Paige. She definitely has a future outside of wrestling.

  13. I like rock too, but I don’t think Allison is a rock artist. I really don’t know what her lane is!

Gene, I have yet to watch DWTS, I’ve taped them and haven’t watched them, maybe now with Nashville and Castle being cancelled, I will start watching the next season.

Gene and Louise, I definitely could see Hannah sneaking up on this group and winning, as well as Laith and Bryan.

Hunter, LOL, is said the same thing to the hubby, Christina has had the girls out for a walk a lot this year! Time to put the puppies back in their crate! 😳

  14. I don’t see Alisan as a rocker either. Genre preference isn’t really the issue for me. I like rock as well but even Steven Tyler has more nuance and doesn’t have to sing everything with his pedal to the metal. I don’t mean to be too smug and I can certainly see why someone would like Alisan.

I think the remark about her iTunes chart position was appropriate, although it would have set better coming from Christina or one of the other coaches. It was pretty impressive. Keep in mind that it was the one song this season where she did keep control of herself and did give a nuanced performance that put her in that chart position.

The thing that makes me think she is full of herself is the way she responds to the judges comments. Also the look on her face during eliminations. Being self assured isn’t necessarily a bad thing for a person in the public eye but I think she needs something she isn’t getting from Christina or the Voice staff.

I would like to see a Hannah and Laith one two. I suspect that Alisan / Brian is more likely.

Louise, I agree, Ginger is having a good run as well. I can see her as a potential winner. Having the contestants dance with each other was interesting.

Vonnie, We usually watch DWTS live, then The Voice recorded and Bates Motel recorded after that. Monday nights are pretty full. The star power of this group is a little lacking but the competition is very good. I think you will enjoy it when you get around to watching it.

  19. Okay! A weekend question; do you think that with the addition of Simon on AGT, the show will now turn into a singing competition? I have been toying with this thought, that this will be the replacement of Idol now!?!?!?!?

    Like

  20. That’s an interesting thought Vonnie. I only watch the show every once in a while but the past winners that I am familiar with are singers. I don’t know how attached the viewers may be to the other types of acts.

My guess would be that they will began by leaning more toward singers in their mix. If that sells, they may add more.

On the other hand, the other judges have come from a broad entertainment background so Simon’s particular field may not matter that much.

I feel strongly both ways. 🙂

  21. Simon was a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, I think. Usually singers are the most popular acts, followed by magicians and dancers. I don’t see Simon changing this. He probably just wanted to get his face before the American public again after X-Factir bombed!!!

  22. Louise and Gene!

I will be glad to have Simon back on my tv, I always liked him. There were times that I thought him to be more rude than normal, but all in all I pretty much always agreed with his critique, except for Taylor! 😃💕

I hope the show keeps the everything goes format!

  23. Last night I liked:

Adam and Mary Sarah, Adam/Allison duet. I wasn’t blown away by anyone.

I wanted to like Allison and Hannah, but both have issues with flailing arms and hands that distract me. Hannah had a Broadway vibe to her song, I didn’t feel the angst in her performance!!

If if we’re to guess a top four, I would say: Allison, Adam, Mary Sarah, and Bryan; although I think it could come down to Bryan or Hannah!

    Like

  24. I loved Hannah last night, but for the first time, I also thought Alison did a good job. It is going to be hard to eliminate people, but I think Paxton will go.

    Like

  25. It’s hard to separate Alisan from the songs she sings. Angel from Montgomery and Desperado are probably on some list of greatest songs of all time. Definitely on my list. I thought to myself, there is no way to go wrong with Angel… but then there was the big useless blurt near the end. She can’t help herself.

I thought Hannah’s song choices were not well suited to her. Laith was happy as a pig in mud on their duet but the song didn’t suit Hannah. Neither did her solo. It was ok but I didn’t love it.

On the other hand, Mary Sarah’s solo was an excellent choice except that it required her to sing in her lower register long enough to reveal her weakness in that area. She does the soaring high end very well and presents herself on stage very professionally as well. Her duet song choice didn’t suit her style but I thought she did quite well with this pop song.

Why Laith would choose an Adele song is beyond me. He pulled it off except he probably should have taken Pink’s advice on the high note.

Bryan seems to enjoy good fan support so I’m not sure how he will do tonight. I liked the idea of his solo but didn’t enjoy the performance.

Adam probably had the best night of anyone and his single is at #2 on iTunes. At this point 6 of the 8 are in iTunes top 10 leaving only Shalyah and Paxton on the outside looking in. Those two are easy picks to go home, but the other two are up for grabs. This cut is too deep. They are eliminating contestants for no reason except the schedule they created. Two would be about right at this point.

Pink was a hoot and offered interesting advice.

That was my weatherman, James Span, on DWTS last night during the backstory segment for Ginger. He was her mentor during her internship as a meteorologist. If you believe what the political hacks tell you regarding the climate, his is one of many educated opinions worth considering.

  26. Wow! Didn’t see that coming! Wonder why they did the Twitter save for the top four, I don’t have a pony in this race, but I would have liked to have seen the ones who got the votes to be in the finale, be there!

  31. It’s interesting that there are three professional (to some degree) singers / performers and Miss Hannah the sings-twice-a-year-in-public-pre-school-teacher making up perhaps the best top four (when all four are considered as a group) in the history of The Voice.

If they make good song choices, nest week should be great.

  34. Hate the twitter save. It’s an insult to those who have actually invested money in an artist by buying their iTunes downloads.

The last time I looked at the charts, Mary Sarah was in the top four in sales and Laith was out. At this stage of the competition, I’m both surprised and pleased that Laith would come out on top in a twitter vote and that he will continue. Mary Sarah has an issue that can probably be worked out with the help of a vocal coach, but it has shown up in all of her performances since her blind audition and we have no idea how massaged those are. I like her if she stays with her traditional country theme and stops trying to be Carrie Underwood. I hope she works through her problem and becomes a huge success but I also think that this was the correct result for the competition.

I still hate the twitter save.

    Like

  35. Yep! At this stage of the competition it should have been by votes and downloads only…why do I not remember them doing the Twitter save for the top four before?!?

I really don’t have a favored one to win, but probably out of the batch Adam would be my choice!

  36. i’ve also always ‘hated’ the twitter save. last week as i watched the itunes downloads though, i thought, okay, the twitter save seems to mimic itunes, so the people who were lowest in itunes were lowest in the twitter save, so i felt a little better. this week as i watched itunes, i was THRILLED when laith made top ten. i thought, okay, he has a chance, since those votes are doubled. bryan has never seemed to be as high in itunes. i agree that this is just cutting out too many in one fell swoop. and it sooo depends on the song. i thought it was the ‘person’, but i saw how allison wasn’t high in the charts last week (and i was happy to see that, and thought, ‘oh good, she isn’t a shoo in).

although i don’t really have a horse (dog, pony?) in the race, i guess i sort of do since i like laith best. i was sooooooooooooooo thrilled that he was voted through. i didn’t like the adele song at all that he sang this week. i think he sang it (on adam’s recommendation?) because he wanted to prove he could do ‘anything’. i *loved* ‘along the watchtower’ and i’m glad he chose it. i also found it very very interesting that it was a very gutsy performance in that it had the two guitar ‘solos’.

mary sarah will be taken care of by blake, in terms of exposure and concerts, he seems to do that.

i find it interesting to see who is trending on twitter..regarding the saves.

    Like

  37. p.s., i think the twitter save has nothing to do with the singers and has everything to do with marketing. it is a way for The Voice to be seen on Twitter (trending), and also, it supposedly has us stay tuned to the commercials because we are watching the results graphs through the commercials.

  38. as i googled the voice saves, it is amazing how many different spellings there are. there are a lot of votes not being counted. here is a pic of the total retweets which goes along with how the itunes ratings seemed to be going:

oh darn, it won’t let me post the pic.

    laith 613 retweets

    mary sara 460 retweets

    bryan 347 retweets

that isn’t all that many people voting.

obviously there will be more that aren’t retweets, these are just retweets.

  40. I don’t like the twitter save either. I suppose they do it to get viewers to watch the elimination show to the very end. I, too, was surprised that Mary Sarah will not be in the final, but think she will be a success as a country singer. She is a natural. Of the top four, my least favorite is Alisan.

  41. iTunes chart positions aren’t the be all to end all when it comes to who will advance or not. When nearly every singer gets that multiplier, all bets are off.

I agree with Gene about Mary Sarah singing Carrie Underwood songs. She doesn’t have a strong enough voice to pull those off.
