About Masterclass Lady
Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli.
When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler.
She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8.
In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman.
In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins.
In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright.
In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins.

I loved Trents last vocal…his falsetto is sweet to my ears!

MCL, I hope you meant it about the comments, because here comes my usual screed! 😀
Still trying to jot down something before the judges judge (I don’t always make it but I’m trying).
1st Song–Hometown Songs
Mac–Hallelujah: I think I’ve heard this song so many different ways that it doesn’t make an impression on me any more? It was done really well and the arrangement suited him, but I was waiting for a moment and…didn’t have one. (I could blame that on Jason Castro, who’s the one who set off a reality show storm of Hallelujahs by having a major moment with the song. 😉 )
Dalton–Calling You: Boy, he really, really chooses songs by the lyrics, and he really means them, and he reaches right out and makes us know that he means them. It’s oddly intimate even when the arrangement is big, like this one. Love that!
Trent–Tennessee Whiskey: Was the band out of key with him? Or was it just the wrong instrumentation? It sounded beautiful when it went a cappella and it was fine after, but before that bit there was something about the band that was hitting me wrong. (Or maybe it was a little too much vibrato? Dunno.)
La’Porsha–Glory: It ended strong, but she was a little drowned by the band/backup singers in the first part….Okay, here’s the thing–this is the kind of song that leaves me cold, no matter how good the singer, so I can’t really critique it. So although she fought back and won out over bandzilla, the song definitely didn’t reach me.
2nd Song–Scott’s Choices
Dalton–Dancing in the Dark: I did not think that would work, but boy, that WORKED! The arrangement sounded fresh without losing the song, which is cool–and more, I must have heard that song a thousand times, and I never realized that the lyrics were so dark. How does he DO that?

La’Porsha –Stay with Me Baby: Man, she can SING. But coming after her visit to the women’s shelter it’s a very odd choice for her, and it doesn’t sound exactly like her, more restrained or something maybe?
…AHA! I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I KNEW IT! So more credit to her that she could sing it well anyway.
Trent–Drink You Away: I…wish Justin Timberlake had kept that song to himself. Trent did what he could with it–probably pretty much as well anyone could do with it–but there’s no melody to work with. He didn’t let himself get swallowed by that arrangement, but that’s as much as I can say.
3rd Song–Judges’ Choices
Dalton–Everybody Wants to Rule the World: I ended up hearing the judges first on this one, but I disagree strongly with them, not because they were necessarily wrong musically–I can’t speak to that–but because dropping the key underlined how cynical the lyrics are, which is an entirely defensible choice. (Or maybe it was Dalton again, infusing the meaning into my brain and it would have worked at the higher key anyway, but I think it helped him make his point.)
La’Porsha–Hello: Speaking of dropping the key… Okay. First, I do not like this song. We are supposed to realize that the character in the song is a crazy, creepy, passive-aggressive stalker lady who can’t let go and can’t stop sniping at the guy, right? Second–AGAIN she’s getting stuck with a song about someone who can’t let go of a guy?!?! SERIOUSLY? (Nice try, La’Porsha, but I don’t think that’s a real difference. But extra points for diplomacy!) She did do a great job vocally with the second half, when it got back into her range.
HANG ON A MINUTE JUDGES! Why is it okay for La’Porsha to drop the key but not okay for Dalton to do it?!? I call shenanigans!
Trent–Waiting Game: That’s a lovely song, and I liked that he just stood and delivered it, straight on. I love his chest voice and I like his head voice–but the falsetto didn’t work for me in this song, it sounded a little piercing and I didn’t like it.
And you can all make of that what you will. 🙂 They have three awesome finalists. Personally, my favorite is Dalton (I care so much about lyrics, so that follows naturally), but I think Trent is a bit more likely to win.

I was visiting and packing and cleaning before we leave for home in a couple of days. I watched the last two segments of the show. And, in a nutshell, I think we are headed for a Trent win here. The song choices were clearly in Trent’s favor although I have heard him sound better.
But, I am really sad that the season was so rushed. Even this performance show was on fast forward. The song lengths were ridiculously short. I would much rather here two full – length sings than three abbreviated ones.
Anyway, I am off to sleep. Thanks everyone for your feedback. Keep it coming.

I thought Dalton was off tonight, from his wide eyes to his blundering to the stage…just my opinion! 😃😉
I don’t know if anyone from idol reads here or not, but Trent REALLY needs to sing a Marvin Gaye song, (just please not Heard it through the grapevine).
La P didn’t impress me at all tonight! Sad to see MacKenzie go home!

Dalton leaves me totally cold, and I just can’t get into him. Loved Trent tonight, but also enjoyed LaPorsha. I’m hoping for a Trent win, and that’s where my votes went.

I got to watch my local weatherman doing tornado coverage all night long. It illustrates how big of a fall from grace that AI has made over the years. In the past they would assure you that Idol would be seen in it’s entirety after storm coverage and they would keep the coverage brief.
Thanks to retreaded, Vonnie, MCL and Katilac for your impressions and comments. Sounds like my boy Trent has a drinking problem! The late great George Jones’ Tennesee Whiskey and Justin Timberlakes’ Drink You Away, hmm.

Trent had spoken earlier of family members with alcohol problems. I was surprised with the song choices as a result.
MacKenzie was quite graceful in his exit.
Final four contestants should have 2 – 2 1/2 minutes for the songs, not 1:30. The current format seems like speed dating. The final four contestants are always tired at this point. It showed last night.

Every year when the contestants have to sing songs chosen for them, it is usually a disappointment. Last night was the same as previous years. I didn’t think any of the performances were as good as I’ve heard them in other shows. I was quite annoyed about Scott’s song choice for La’Porsha because of her relationship problem. And I really dislike the Adele song “Hello.” I also really disliked the Justin Timberlake song. I would prefer a Trent win, La’Porsha as runner-uo, and Dalton in third place. But I doubt if it will work out that way.

MCL, you are SO right about the length of the performances–they totally short-changed the singers by making them chop up the songs so much. Someone put Dalton’s iTunes version of “Dancing in the Dark” up on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJh7BPn1v0E) and as well as it worked cut down, it works so MUCH better long form. I have to think the same is true of the other songs.
Why even bother having a final season if it’s all short and squinched and chopped up?

I’m not sure if it is the tone of Dalton’s voice, but I have trouble hearing him. I thought this week he was acting very odd.
No tour!?!?!? Wow! These final season contestants have gotten cheated all the way around.

I also thought Dalton was acting differently but my guess was as a bipolar personality the outpouring of affection was probably almost too much for him too process or bear. Were it me as a song chooser, I would have LaPorsha sing You Pulled Me Through (Joshua Ledet version), Dalton sing Help (Linda Eder version) or Will You Still Love me Tomorrow (Norah Jones version), and Trent sing I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Paris performance version). Just those three/four songs would make it the finale of finales if they did what they are capable of doing.
