Taylor Swift 1989

Well, that didn’t take long, did it? Looks like Taylor Swift and Apple made “nice, nice” after this past week’s -uhm – “misunderstanding“.

According to Taylor Swift’s Twitter account, the popular recording artist has decided to release her 1989 Album for streaming on Apple Music.

Apple Music is scheduled to go live on Tuesday, June 30th and, although Taylor Swift stipulated that the album will initially be released to Apple for live streaming,it will be available to other streaming sites, such as Spotify, in the future. Just not now. Because that would not play well with Apple.

So, as predicted here a couple of days ago, it seems that this lovely, very creative and oh so fun PR stunt played out as planned. And just in time for the launch of Apple Music.

I love when show business and technology collide. My…

  1. Hi Rosanne, I hope you are enjoying your summer.

You know I like a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy but I must admit that I didn’t see one in this situation. It was my understanding that Taylor’s beef with the new Apple streaming service was that they didn’t intend to pay royalties to the artist for the use of their intellectual property, while Apple stood to make large profits from it.

When she stepped up and took on Apple over this arrangement, she bennifited countless younger, less popular, and newer artist who may have gambled everything they have to finance the cost of recording their first single, EP or album with the hopes of paying those expenses with the proceeds from artist or writer royalties paid to them by the end user.

Maybe she did this as a self promotional stunt but I have never seen her take an approach of that sort. Her action caused Apple to relent and decide to pay royalties to the content providers. Artist who are lower on the food chain than Taylor have to be rejoicing. I’m glad for them as well. Artist shouldn’t be expected to work for free whether it is under apple’s scheme or under one of the rip off downloading schemes of a few years past. I think Apple would eventually require artist to provide content for this service before they could sell their products on iTunes.

The one thing about this story that looks fishy is how quickly Apple relented under no more pressure than a web post from Taylor. Personally, I think they realized that if she took that attitude, all of the other “A” list artist would as well and their new service would die in the cradle if they didn’t change their plan.

  2. Thanks for your input Gene.

I think the whole thing still sounds weird to me. Apple is filthy rich, so, at the end of the day, they could afford to pay the artists for the 3-month trial. And they couldn’t just withhold payment without making a deal with the big name artists. Plus three months is a lengthy trial period for anything.

So, they had their little fun and now everyone will be tuning in to Apple Music. 🙂

  3. I’ve been reading on some radio discussion forums that the major labels want to get rid of ad-supported free streaming.
