Never heard this song in my life. But, if it includes rapping, then it’s no wonder. One cannot know every song ever written. I know the whole musical theatre catalogue though haha

Glory was the recent Oscar winning song. It’s from the movie, Selma. It’s sung by John Legend with some rap parts by Common.

Speaking of musical theater, Josh Groban has finally put out an album of songs from musicals! Kelly Clarkson is one of the featured duets.
And Chris Mann, from season 2 of The Voice, is playing the role of The Phantom in the US touring production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera.

After seeing the iTunes chart, I had a feeling about who the bottom two would be. But…Wow…That Instant Save percentage was very close!

I flipped back and forth between the Dancing results show and The Voice results show. Josh Groban was performing on the Dancing results show. His vibrato has become noticeably faster over the years. Is that common with classically trained singers? The reason I ask is because posters on MJs Blog criticize India for having a fast vibrato and I know that she is classically trained.

Craig’s single soared up the country chart after his performance last night.

Idol Girl – vibrato is part and parcel of everyone’s voice. However, classically trained singers should know how to turn it off and on. When they don’t, then vibrato is called tremolo – where the voice vibrates without control.
Personally, I think India has great control over her vibrato and people are finding something that is not there. Her voice is beautifully controlled. I am. It hearing the pitch problems others are hearing. Not at all.
Josh Groban has pretty much let his technique go. His voice warbles and is nasally – he is kind of a technical mess right now.
On American Idol, Tyanna had vibrato as well but she didn’t have the control exhibited by India and some times encountered pitch issues as a result.

For me, Groban is so much more than just a ‘technically perfect’ voice. I for one am happy with imperfections – shows he’s human.

For me, it’s about showing emotion. A lot of technically perfect singers tend to leave me cold. I think that could be why Koryn is connecting more to viewers than India is. That girl puts so much emotion into her performances that she literally trembles.

For me, I find her “over the top” and her voice is such a technical nightmare. It is such a hard listen. She really needs to address her vocal issues or she won’t have a voice anymore. She needs to dial it back a little.

Idol Girl and Master Class Lady – I listened to his latest album. His voice isn’t as nasal as it has been for the past several years. It’s not a complete return to the days of the debut/Closer. And it might just be limited to the studio stuff. But wow, it’s good to hear his voice so “open-sounding” again. I noticed in the liner notes for this album that he has a new voice teacher. Maybe she’s teaching him some new techniques.

Cookie – I just saw him on Jimmy Fallon and, although he was singing more openly, the strain and the push on his throat were difficult to watch and hear. He was reaching for those high notes and not using the full strength of his diaphragm.
And why switch voice teachers? He had a great one once upon a time – when he was first discovered.

I’m not a hard-core fan of Josh Groban nor am I a vocal expert though I do like Groban and have a good grasp on technical singing. While I’ll freely admit that being able to sing technically flawless does not coincide with actually sounding good, technical singing ability usually does make a song much more pleasant to listen to. (A lot of comments have been on the timbre and vibratto control, which is admittedly quite good though I can’t vouch for the live performances. Still a singer can also sing a note with perfect breath support and clarity but be singing in the wrong key, which is fairly painful to listen to.)
Aside from that though, I want to comment on what I hear in the limited selection of music I’ve heard by Groban. I really like what I’ve heard in terms of studio. The breath control is great, tthe vibratto strong, the register shifts smooth. In terms of the few live performances I’ve heard, well, the base technique is still there, but the song iisn’t nearly as pleasant to listen to as the studio. Obviously there are factors into live singing – it could’ve just been a bad day and he doesn’t have multiple attempts – but the vibratto and timbre of his voice seem to suffer a bit more than I’d expect. Still, the songs still resemble the studio performances, which is a good thing just because the songs in studio demonstrate some nice technical ability. In terms of possible voice deteriation, well quite frankly, I haven’t heard enough to form an opinion. I will, however, say that he does seem to be using falsetto more often than his head voice to hit those fourth octave notes. This can be a stylistic choice or it could be that he’s losing some of his range. Either way, that doesn’t bother me since the register shifts are clean and he’s got a nice falsetto.
From the opinion of a person who his a terrible singer. You know, cause apparently if I can’t sing as well as Groban, I shouldn’t be allowed to talk about his voice.

His voice is has gotten lower with age and he’s in denial.
It seems like Groban is continuing to get lower. His high notes have gotten weaker. His lower notes, which used to be raspy, are more booming. I’ve heard of guys suddenly finding themselves as basses at age 40. I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens to Groban.

Yes, everyone’s voice naturally deepens with age but technique preserves the upper range. Josh just needs to get in touch with his technical skills to regain his upper range.

What he needs to do is transpose songs down to lower keys.

On the BBC show, “Loose Women”, he makes a reference about drinking. That could be a factor.
He gets sick a lot. That may be a factor.
Groban’s voice has many good natural qualities, but strength and power are not among them. Once above a certain level, he must squeeze and strain his voice for more volume and compromise his sound. In the studio he can disguise this a bit, but not live. It seems to me he is best suited to medium-sized intimate type theaters…the quieter, the better. Instead, he’s been doing arena rock type concerts, where he’s had to adjust his delivery and gear it more towards power instead of gracefulness. Over the years, the arena rock setting could be taking a toll on his voice.

I think it’s a wise idea that he’s trying to branch out into other avenues of entertainment – acting, hosting TV shows.

Matt – I have never heard of this show. Loose Women? Is it a reality series? I hope he is not suffering from alcohol abuse. That would just be so sad. He has such a beautiful voice – it needs care and attention.
