A MasterClass Moment: David Cook’s ShowStopping Response To Caleb Johnson

IMG_0083.JPG
When will American Idol Season 13 winner, Caleb Johnson, ever learn to keep his mouth shut? Someone “google” him a filter and a brain because this guy does not know how “keep a lid on it” to save his life.

Recently, he dissed American Idol Season 7 winner, David Cook, by saying that he – meaning Caleb – was the first legitimate rocker to win American Idol. And then he went on to say that David was not a real rocker because he just performs pop rock.

Huh? Say what?

That’s what David Cook said too!!

So, at as recent concert, our man David politely issued a vocal response via a jaw-dropping performance of Led Zepplin’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll/ Whole Lotta Love”.

Watch it below and drool. What say you now, Caleb?

And, by the way, on this website, I am only interested in artists with class and good manners. David Cook is one of my favorite artists in the stratosphere. At all times, he exudes professionalism and musical excellence and personifies the true meaning behind an American Idol.

Comment away everyone. This topic is open for business.

  1. David Cook is of course very talented and yes he is a rocker , i don’t think Caleb was saying that David couldn’t do a great job on a hard rock song, Caleb never said that, Caleb just meant that most of his music is pop rock or alternitve rock but i am sure Caleb knows what a very talented performer that David Cook is, David needs to get a little thicker skin than this, this is being blown way out of proportion, and this is not a huge big deal that it is being made out to be, calm down and chill out , there is plenty of room in music world for both of these great singers ! Caleb is the first contestant on Idol to perform real hard rock on the show , such as Rush and Led Zepplin as well as Whitesnake, that is a fact !

  3. In reply to Lisa H…Actually, David sang The Who (Teenage Wasteland) and Adam Lambert sang Led Zepplin (Whole Lotta Love) in their respective years. James Durbin sang Judas Priest, Sammy Hagar, Muse & The Beatles his year. No, Caleb was not the “first contestant on Idol to perform real hard rock on the show & his fans need to get their facts straight. Caleb needs a filter & to take his foot out of his mouth. He’s turned a lot of people off of his music. He’ll need to learn not to alienate potential fans, but from his history, I don’t see that happening.

  4. Just checking in here. Loving the comments. And, yes, we have had many versions of rock on this show. Pretty much every year. What possible difference can it make what kind of rock was performed. Rock is rock. Alison Iraheta anybody? Caleb is digging himself into a deeper hole with every media interview.

  5. Caleb did perform more hard rock then any other contestant on idol and he never said that David or anyone else for that matter couldn’t do a great job on a hard rock song, Caleb performed more hard rock than anyone else , Adam Lambert is great and one of my favorites and so is David Cook , Adam is more glam rock, like Queen, there is plenty of room for all of them in music, so grow up and calm down and chill out ! Caleb has a pure hard rock sound and look and he is very talented and it’s not right for David Cook or anyone else to slam Caleb like this at the beginning of his career , Caleb was not slamming David so don’t say that he was, he never said anything bad about his talent or about David himself, Caleb is a very talented guy and a nice guy, this is all so ridiculous and childish, grow up David Cook fans and get a thicker skin and don’t be so sensitive ! We can all be grown ups and be fans of both of them, which i am !

  6. Caleb performed more hard rock because the themes this season were more generic. In other seasons, the singers were locked into specific themes, be it pop, country, rock, Broadway, Big Band etc. This and only this is the reason why Caleb performed more Hard Rock – because he could.

  7. You’re right Lisa it is childish. Childish in the fact that Caleb can’t keep his foot out of his mouth. First calling fans “ret*rds” then slamming another singer because he’s supposedly not real is childish. He’s got a lot to learn and he had better learn it quickly, because the more he talks the more trouble he’s going to get into. Maybe he needs a dictionary to just what “rock” is.

  8. He did not call his fans ret’rds, these people were coming on his facebook page and saying horrible things to him just because he had become a fan favorite and the favorite to win the show instead of other contestants on the show that they were a fan of, they definitely were not fans of Calebs and he apologized over and over again and you are lying ! Caleb never slammed David Cook or anyone else, he simply stated an opinion that he , Caleb, is the first real rocker to win Idol, he never said that David Cook wasn’t a great singer and he never said anything bad about him at all, and he never said that David couldn’t perform a great hard rock song, Caleb didn’t say anything bad about David at all, but you are slamming Caleb for no reason other than you must enjoy it, we can be fans of both of them and i wish both of them all of the success in the world, there is plenty of room in music for both of them to have great careers ! Please stop bad mouthing Caleb and put on your big boys and girls pants and realize that they are both very talented and they both rock and they both have great futures ahead of them and stop all of this bad mouthing of Caleb , he is a good guy and a talented guy and he doesn’t deserve any of this !

  9. Then Lisa he needs to “put his big boy pants on” and act like an adult instead of a jerk.

  10. You are the one acting like a jerk ! Caleb has never said anything bad about David Cook, like i said , Caleb never said that David couldn’t do a great job on a rock song and he never said anything bad about David at all, but you are saying really bad things about Caleb and i bet David Cook would not approve of that at all ! You should be ashamed of yourselves ! I like David and Caleb and i am a fan of both of them but you constantly bad mouthing Caleb shows you have no class and you don’t know what you are talking about !

  11. David Cook is–and always has been–a class act! And Caleb needs to get himself to Laputa and get himself a flapper to keep him out of mischief. 😉

It seems quite antithetical to the spirit of rock to restrict itself to any such narrow definition as that, anyway!

  12. Have you guys noticed that Caleb’s fans are completely incapable of admitting to any of his flaws? Would be so refreshing for someone to say “yeah, the r word comment was uncalled for and he should show a little respect for the person who blazed the trail for him.” Humble opinion

  13. You David Cook fans are having a great time with your Caleb bashing ! I doubt David would support that at all ! David is a great talent and so is Caleb , and David didn’t blaze a trail for Caleb , that’s absolutely a ridiculous statement to make ! David Cook was on the show before Caleb but that doesn’t mean he blazed a trail for him, they are both equally as talented as the other , they have different styles and a different sound and that’s good, it would be boring if it weren’t like that ! Please people get a new past time, constantly bashing Caleb like this makes you all look like bullies , David gave his response to Caleb’s opinion and that should’ve been the end of it, this article is showing that some of David’s fans are making a real sport out of bashing Caleb and they should be ashamed of themselves ! Caleb is a very talented man and you all are clearly not Caleb’s fans and you never will be and that’s fine but you should really show some class and stop all of this nonsense, like i said , i doubt David Cook would approve of it anyway !

  16. I hope Caleb learns to think before he speaks. It is one thing to make a general statement. When you single out one artist that is just being mean, hurtful and obnoxious! David Cook was mentor on American Idol and helped all of the contestants including him Caleb should look to David Cook for example of someone that has ‘Never’ talked bad about another artist on any Social Media. Humility & Kindness along with Talent go along way for one’s career.

  17. I will be the bigger person here, clearly you David Cook fans won’t do that, i by the way am a David Cook fan also, i admit i am a bigger Caleb Johnson fan, i wish all the best to David Cook and to Caleb Johnson and i look forward to lots of great music from both of them in the future ! Rock on David Cook and Rock on Caleb Johnson ! Please stop being bullies and leave Caleb alone , Caleb never said anything bad about David , he did not say that David wasn’t a great talent or that David couldn’t perform a great rock song, clearly David can do that and does do that, they both are talented and they have different sounds and styles and that’s a good thing ! Let the Caleb bashing continue , because that seems to be the purpose of all of this, like i said , you all should be ashamed of yourselves , you are taking this way too far and I am sure David Cook would agree ! Bash on ! Have fun !

  18. Lisa – I never wanted this site to morph into a bashing site. However, I still think that Caleb’s comments were unwarranted. I cannot recall any former Idol – let
alone a winner – make such inappropriate comments about other artists. And, they were unfounded and unnecessary. Caleb needs to get hooked to a marketing company or a REALLY SAVVY manager who, will train him in the art of proper interview skills.

I think Caleb has a beautiful voice but his abrupt and arrogant persona has turned off many fans who would have happily embraced him under other circumstances. He creates controversy for a reason. I am not the only one who has commented on his latest brouhaha. Google for yourself and see for yourself.

  19. Caleb is not arrogant at all and if you followed him as closely as i have , you would see that and as i said before , Caleb didn’t say anything about David’s great talent or great voice and you know he didn’t , Caleb gave his opinion on David’s style of music but he certainly said nothing about his talent , like i said, you have taken this way too far and that’s a real shame ! Jena Irene who was the runner up on Idol, on her facebook page , her fans were calling Caleb names and saying that he shouldn’t have won and saying he was arrogant, and Jena’s own father came to his rescue on his daughter’s facebook page, he said he has spent lots of time with Caleb and he was the opposite of arrogant, he was very humble and thankful to have won Idol, the last thing Caleb said on the night he won was, thank you all so much and god bless you ! :Caleb is a good person and a great talent as is David Cook and i will not be commenting here anymore, clearly you all enjoy saying these horrible things about Caleb , as i said i wish David and Caleb all of the best in the future and i look forward to more great music from both of them !

  20. Ok, Lisa. Here is this. Rereading my last statement…you caught me on a bad day and I see that I was snarkier than usual, which is not a good representation of myself, nor a David fan. So, without any sarcasm, let me explain. .

I was a Caleb fan this season, then the r word incident happened. The word grates me like you wouldn’t believe for personal reasons which are irrelevant to this blog. I waited for an apology, a simple my bad…and the forthcoming explanation did not endear Caleb to me at all.
This David thing? I think maybe Caleb meant no harm, but that he did say David wasn’t real rock. He meant it differently, perhaps, but surely you can see that it was a poor choice of words?

Now, for my first comment, which was not sarcastic and I felt reasonable…how can you argue that David blazed a trail? He was a rocker, with a guitar, and he won..huge! Bo Bice and Daughtry blazed the trail for him. That was in no way an insult, just to clarify.

To close, I’m sorry you felt bullied. That is a horrible way to feel. We are a fiercely protective lot. I, for one, enjoy a lively debate and that is what I was seeking, never to make you feel bad. You have your Ipod and I have mine. Yay Idol!

  21. IMHO Caleb’s got a big mouth for someone who hasn’t proven himself as a recording artist yet. David is so incredibly gracious and classy and Caleb (to me) came across the complete opposite this past season.

  23. Caleb is a tool!! I can’t stand him. Chris Daughtry sang a lot of rock. He was forced to not sing rock many weeks. Adam Lambert and David Cook can sing anything. After his recent sales numbers Caleb should zip it. He isn’t selling well (worst sales for any winner to date) and he isn’t receiving radio play. Those in glass houses should not throw stones.

  24. Aubry – of course. How could I forget Chris Daughtry? And, as I said previously, he was locked into those theme nights. I actually loved the theme nights. It forced the singers to explore music that they never thought to include in their repertoire and often, many wonderful musical moments happened as a result of this.

  27. Awesome!! My favorite David Cook is Rocker David Cook!! 😉 Seriously…I love that he’s so versatile. All I ever saw of Caleb (which I only saw a few performances cause I don’t follow AI) was screaming rock. And apparently he missed some of David’s performances on AI and most definitely did not follow his live performances where he played hard rock. Or did research on his pre-idol music. Anywho…thanks for tweeting this, cause this video brought back great memories. Rock on DC!!

  28. Lisa you refuse to admit that Caleb was wrong. You want to act like he is a victim he isn’t he said all these things people did not make them up. So if he wants to say it. We get to respond to it. David couldn’t do more rock because he had themes his year and some of the music wasn’t even release to idol for their singers to sing. Zed Zepplin finallly allowed it the next year. So you and Caleb need to do some reseach before saying anything. Caleb isn’t the first Rocker to win that was David. The title was given to him by Idol and the press. He didn’t give it to himself like Caleb did. He wants to open his mouth then guess what people get to react to it. You can defend him all you want. It doesn’t change the facts. He was wrong to say what he said. He not idol first Rocker and but he certainly is idol first winner to have no class. All the idol speak fondly of each other but this kid just won’t shut his mouth. Hell even Bo Bice tweeted David because He wasn’t thrilled with the comment and Bo was the first rocker on idol. That say everything.

  29. A few more comments from me about this.

I love that David doesn’t feel the need to define himself as a “rocker”, and instead acknowledges that “we can be more than one thing”.

The way Caleb said pop-rock, with some disdain, also puts me off to him. There’s nothing shameful about taking one’s music in a direction that is commercially viable.

  30. A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the American Idols Live concert at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. During the season, I was a bit of a Jena, but not so much that I ever voted. I was quite impressed by Caleb’s live performance, which included a song from his CD. (“Fighting Gravity”). He is a talented singer and I hope that he is able to build a career for himself.

That being said, I will have to say that his “retard” comment left a sour taste in my mouth during the season. Caleb needs to have a thicker skin if he’s bothered by some negative comments on his FB page. I think the whole “I’m the true hardcore rocker!” talk is just plain silly. I’m not even sure why David Cook bothered to respond.

So, while this particular performance of “Whole Lotta Love” is not quite hard rock, I can’t resist posting it. I was there in that audience.. It was unrehearsed. It was spontaneous. It was magical. It was genius.

I hope that Caleb will one day pull off his own Whole Lotta Love.

  31. Oh, I meant “Jena fan.” MCL – We need an edit function here!

Lisa Hamilton – As a long-time Glambert, I’d like to make a suggestion to you. Something that has really hurt Adam’s reputation post-Idol is that many of his hardcore fans have endlessly proclaimed him as the “greatest singer alive.” I understand wanting to defend your Idol. Adam has had his fair share of detractors and has been unfairly (and sometimes fairly) criticized in the media and on blogs. Whenever it happens, the hardcore Glamberts spring into action to defend him. The end result is that his fanbase, and I belong to it, come across looking ridiculous.

It’s o.k. for Caleb take a bit of criticism and for him to learn how to more effectively deal with his critics on his own two feet. It’s o.k. to admit that he is less than perfect. You’ll be a better fan if you can step back and engage in more of a conversation and take less of a hardcore “I must defend Caleb at every chance” position.

  32. Lisa,

Caleb isn’t talking about being a hard rocker in the interview, he’s talking about being classic rock. He has this misguided notion that classic rock is more authentic than modern rock. If he had said he is the first one to win with a classic rock sound, it wouldn’t be a problem.
