Alex Preston – Please Help Him To STAY!

Excellence comes in a variety of packages.

And Alex Preston has his own unique look and sound.

Packaged in a sometimes awkward but always musical stage presence, Alex Preston gave three absolutely riveting performances on Wednesday’s American Idol Performance.

However, his performance of Rhianna’s “Stay” on the American Idol Top 3 show was an absolute tour de force.

He adapted the song to suit his exquisite artistic style. You see, with Alex, it is all about the artistry mixed with a simplistic approach that is so refreshing and, more importantly, so genuine. His pure, crystalline voice just pierces the heart and pulls you in.

Have a listen below. I know you will be hard pressed to disagree. However, I would love to hear your comments, especially in light of the fact that I could not offer a compete Vocal Masterclass article this week.

  1. I Could. Not. Agree. MORE!

Alex’s “Stay” was absolutely lovely and had me tearing up–and I really did not like the song when I hear it by Rihanna originally, so that’s an even bigger accomplishment! I agree with Harry that his first song (the Randy choice) would have been better with more rehearsal time to make the moving around into body memory, I loved it when he started the drumming and onward. And it seemed to me that he vocally nailed “The Story of My Life”! So VOTE! (I did. :))

  2. Yay. Let’s get this guy in the Top 2. He needs to be there. And, more important, deserves to be there.

  4. Alex’;s version of Stay was one of this season’s best! If he’s not in the Top 2, it will be a major disappointment! I’m so bummed that Kristen isn’t in the Top 3 of The Voice. Her voice is so gorgeous. She really should be the Country artist in the Top 3 instead of Blake’s contestant.

  5. Of course I did my duty. Alex has been in first place all along for me.

I’m interested in the pairing of Jess and Jennifer Nettles in the finale. Jennifer is a pretty generous duet partner, works hard at getting a good blend, and delivering a good performance. Maybe she will wake up Jess’ inner performer a little bit. I was glad that they showed a little bit of her homecoming.

Sam and Phil Phil might be good as well. I think they share many fans.

We also learned that J-Lo isn’t a “thrower.” That was about the only thing she refrained from, and that after the long bleep and careful rewording from Ryan last week. “Fun” I think she said, yeah that’s it. How low will she go?

  6. I just visited the “other” reality TV site and voted on their polls. If you put any faith in them, Caleb will be the one to leave tonight.

Anita . . . I completely agree that Kristen should be the one who stayed on The Voice. I’m not particularly a country fan, but she has a beautiful voice. I hope she gets a recording contract because I’d be sorry to never hear her again.

And, Gene, I also think the pairing of Jess and Jennifer Nettles could be a good one. I’m a big Jennifer Nettles fan.

Yesterday morning I watched Harry Connick’s interview on Kelly and Michael. They asked why he doesn’t ever give standing O’s for the performances. His reply was quite refreshing. He said he is a JUDGE and doesn’t think it is appropriate to show favoritism!!! Last night on Idol, it was extremely annoying to see Jennifer Lopez actually standing and encouraging the audience to keep cheering for Caleb’s version of Dazed and Confused.

  7. Louise – yes, this really annoyed me as well. She showed her bias in doing so. Let his earn his own applause. So ridiculous and completely inappropriate. She looked like a giddy teenager when she did this. A fan girl.

  8. louise-I sure hope we hear from Kristen is the future. I’ll keep up to date with what’s she’s doing. She’ll be quite an amazing addition to the Country Music industry. I’ve been so very impressed with her from day 1!

I voted for the first time for American Idol last night, and gave all my votes to Alex. It really would be great to see him win this thing. Who cares that he’s another WGWG! I sure don’t!

  9. I noticed something about Caleb last night…if he has to sing a song that he can not Rock Scream on “that was picked for him, besides his amazing self” he gets all pouty and says he’s sick, isn’t this the second time he has been sick when having to sing a slower song, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”??????

I loved Alex’s “Stay” and pray that Stay he does!!!

I have a terrible time understanding Jena! Is it just me?!?!?!?!?

Bummed Charlie went home, Bummed Kristen went home!

All of my fav shows are doing their season finale’s…but Hey! AGT is right around the corner!!!

  10. Vonnie – you hit the nail on the head. I totally forgot about all his “illnesses”. Why us a fuss over him? I have never seen such fanfare and it is absolutely inexcusable. He just screams his way through his songs pretty much. And everything sounds the same. I much prefer Alex’s quiet artistry. And I have no idea what Jena is saying either. Very poor, almost affected, articulation.

  11. I have been floored by Alex’s performances throughout this competition. He has made the season watchable for me. I don’t know that I have ever heard someone pour so much genuine emotion into a song without it being overwrought.

I see many comments from people saying that this is the worst season of Idol talent-wise and I guess in some ways that is true, but I can’t help but feel that this boy is one of the MOST talented people I have ever seen on this show!

I have no idea why the judges seem to be leaning away from Alex…he has sold more on iTunes than any of them, and he has an audience that spans generations. I hope he stays till the end but I am prepared if that is not the case. In some ways I think perhaps he would be better off NOT winning the whole thing, so he is not tied to the Idol schlock machine…he needs to have creative control over the music he makes.

  12. I loved both Sam and Alex from the beginning. Did you see Alex’s tweets? He also is very sick with Bronchitis and is on antibiotics and lung steroids. The Idol PTB know this yet went all out in their manipulation to get sympathy votes for Caleb! WHY? I do not think Caleb sings particularly well. He screams everything. He is no Adam Lambert. Also how could he go along with such a ploy when he knows he is not the only one sick? Because he is a shallow self important individual.

I voted and enlisted friends to vote for Alex.

Also glossed over was Caleb’s concert was in a small club of about 200 and Alex filled the UNH stadium of 7500. Calebs concert video was shot from the audience towards the stage to make it look more crowded. Alex and Jena from the stage out to the huge crowds.

It is so odd that Idol wants a dated non artistic contestant in the finale so badly.

Jena is adorable but her tone grates and she does not enunciate.

  13. Oh and I Squeed out loud when they said Sam and Phillip had a duet together, Now talk about sick Phillip was brought from a hospital bed to perform and then taken back after he sang. Kidney Failure. Did Idol go on and on about that? no

  16. I didn’t want to say so beforehand because I was afraid of jinxing him–and Alex clearly wanted to win!–but although I wanted Alex in the finale so I’d be able to have something to look forward to hearing, I think he is better off not winning. I can’t think that TPTB (is it still 19E?) would give Alex the time and artistic freedom he needs to put out a stellar debut album. And I am totally looking forward to him putting out that album so I can buy it!

  18. Alex isn’t in the Finale? A big fat BOOOOOOOO to that! I’m really disappointed. Not only is Alex the most artistic of the three of them, he’s the most marketable for sure I think. And this akwardness about him people keep bringing up….just give him time to grow!

  19. Absolutely ReReader. He is going to go so very far. He doesn’t need the win. I love this kid so much. I will buy his album BEFORE it comes out. Go ALEX!!

  20. What a disappointment! My first inclination was to think that I’m not going to bother watching the finale, but then it occurred to me that I’ll have a chance to hear Sam again. And Alex. So I’ll probably watch.

Today on Facebook, I received a posting about Idol. Before the show started there were over 10,000 posts and it seemed that most people wanted Caleb to win. Jena was next, and then Alex. So I wasn’t too surprised tonight. Disappointed, but not surprised.

I am sure they will comment at some point but rest assured it was a gem of an article. Looking forward to more from you in the future. And thank you once again.

  24. I am so bummed Alex won’t be in the Finale. At least he gets his own performance with Jason Mraz. I think he will be fine one way or other. He is a musician and this will give him the boost he needs to make a living. He seems like he is the type that will love his life if he can play to a crowd — big or small — three days (or more) a week.

  25. Adam Lambert said it best. The show is a platform. The issue becomes whether a contestant post show can translate his or her relative success on the show to relative success in the post AI world. There is no template for that but there is a requirement. Alex’s problem on this show was his lack of projection, projection being the requirement. Urban was perceptive when he told Alex that his Story of My Life was good but up against Johnson’s Dazed and Confused it paled. And it paled not for singing reasons but for performance reasons. That was brought home when I watched Scotty McCreery’s performance on Thursday night. That performance was completely plastic, pretentious, cloying but in the end nothing that Alex could ever have pulled off. Alex is White’s version of Stuart Symington, a 1960’s Presidential candidate whose effect increased as the size of the audience decreased and vice versa. This isn’t to wish Alex ill-luck. Most candidates on AI have great trouble acting, just like Alex, because it is so difficult. Alex was never going to win AI.

  26. It is why I think ultimately Angie Miller will surpass Candice Glover. By the way, the change that really annoyed me this year vis-a-vis last year was the decision to show the home town visits until after the vote had been cast. Maybe Angie would have lost anyway, but it was huge boost to Kree and to Candice to show those home town visits on the night of the vote. I don’t know how they were shown in previous years, but I thought it was a bigger/more significant change than asking the contestants if they wanted to have the double elimination in week four.

  27. I am so disappointed that Alex went home…or am I? I have long since abandoned any delusions that this show has any cultural relevance, or that winning this contest guarantees success, to anyone.

The bottom line is that i think that Alex may be a musical genius, and I don’t throw that term around lightly. For a kid this age to have such a subtle, nuanced vocal like he has, along with his obvious musicality is just stunning to me. His phrasing is CRAZY GOOD. His tone is exceptional. He has the ability to pierce the heart as soon as he opens his mouth. This is a rare gift, IMO.

I hope and pray that we hear more from this young man, because he is amazing to me.

    Louise,

I meant to post on this the other day!

“They asked why he doesn’t ever give standing O’s for the performances. His reply was quite refreshing. He said he is a JUDGE and doesn’t think it is appropriate to show favoritism”

This greatly upped my respect for Harry and erased his Mosh Pit debacle! I think all 3 judges should have that respect for the contestants! After all “they are the ones who selected these contestants out of all who auditioned. There should be no favoritism at all, they should treat them each as their prodigy and nurture them!
