Well, we are off and running! This season, American Idol is shaping up to be a very good season. Some very promising talent was revealed last week and the chemistry and rapport between the judges worked extremely well.

As a musician, I love all the musical terminology spilling out of Harry Connick’s mouth; it is darn refreshing to the ears!! However, he has to be careful not to throw it in everyone’s face every week. A little of this will go a long way. He has to temper this very carefully. No one enjoys a musical snob.

However, he is going to bring heightened credibility to this show and Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez are strong matches for him. They are believable and this is important.

The show has to be clothed in honesty and transparency or else the viewers will grab the remote. This has always been a trademark of American Idol – generally speaking – so I am praying that the pimping and head games are not part of the process this season.

This week, the judges are off to Detroit on Wednesday, January 22nd and Atlanta on Thursday, January 23rd at 8:00 PM on Fox.

One singer, the very talented Anna Kaelin, just posted a video of the song she sang for the judges at the Detroit audition. She is the daughter of renowned voice instructor and coach, Dean Kaelin, who also coached American Idol Season 7 Runner-Up, David Archuleta.

I believe this is her third time auditioning for the show and, after you hear this video, I think you will all agree that she has more than paid her dues. Such a beautiful singer and gorgeous charisma!

Comment away. And, if you have spoilers, please send them my way. Thank you!

  1. Finally, I saw quite a few contestants from the Detroit auditions who I think have real possibility for this year’s Idol! I can’t remember names, but this show was much more enjoyable to watch that the first two episodes last week.

  2. I absolutely agree Louise. This week they are back on track with great talent and great interaction between the judges and the contestants. Loved Detroit. All the singers were excellent and how often can one say that?

  4. Vonnie. – I pretty much loved everyone in Detroit. Especially that Ryan guy with the piled up hairdo. The germ freak? I can relate. Haha. What a talented, talented singer. He is my favorite so far.

  5. MCL…I didn’t remember Ryan Nesbit (?) so I went and watched his audition…I liked him! I think it is going to be a good year! I loved the little skit that Harry and Keith did the other night of Harry auditioning!!! So funny!

  6. I did attend the theater presentation and enjoyed it very much! They gave out small, light weight book bags this year. I prefer the T-shirts from last year. Ethan Harris looks so handsome on a huge screen. :o) Knowing the TOP 31 hasn’t helped as much in deciding the TOP 13. There is a lot of talent being presented and just a few “joke” contestants. Bravo.

There was so much talent from Detroit. I’d like to see Marialle Sellars go farther into the competition. Maurice Townsend sounds really good, too. Seems I remember Brandy Neelly. Usually when someone has tried out and made it to Hollywood 2 seasons (11 & 12) they make it.

  7. KariAnn – I wish I could have been at a theatre presentation. Sounds like fun! And free gifts are always nice.

Yes, Detroit was rocking but I am anxious to see what will emerge from Salt Lake City. Apparently, according to Ryan Seacrest, the talent from this area is their best yet. David Archuleta territory!!

  9. Detroit was much better than Atlanta. Not much of a Mo-town vibe except the worship leader with four kids that was pretty good and had a little bit of an old school R&B feel to him.

No one has a name for me yet but the guy who sang a Carrie Underwood song that they said looked like a super hero was a natural performer with a nice voice.

There was a girl who reminded me of Haley Reinhart that sang two songs, ending with an acapella version of “Dead or Alive” that got my attention. She is a second generation performer which is a trait that most of the contestants that I have liked over the years have.

I also liked a guy that sang near the judges panel while Keith accompanied him on the contestant’s guitar.

There were many others, but those stood out for me. I suspect the lackluster Atlanta auditions may be by design to break the dominance of Southeastern contestants and voters that we have seen in past years.

Salt Lake City should be an interesting location. Brooke White was also from there and for me was a very enjoyable contestant, even though she wasn’t on course for the confetti shower, she held up her end of the show each week.

I’m glad that they finally listened to the fans and stopped wasting so much time on clowns and sad backstories. I have never enjoyed the audition part of the season because of all of the wasted time and the early stage pimping. They have done a nice job of limiting those elements and giving us the most enjoyable panel of judges who are entertaining without dominating the show. I’m not much of a J-Lo fan but she has at least been pleasant so far. The level of discourse of music is at an all time high for this show, but pales in comparison to the “Masterclass” offered on the Sing-Off. Jewell has raised the bar from the already high level and all three judges deliver their comments in a constructive, friendly and entertaining way without competing with each other to be the smartest kid in the class. I hope this new panel on Idol can continue at the current level or better as they move into the live rounds.

  10. Hi There Gene W.

I am also enjoying the format of the show thus far; the chemistry between Keith and Harry is light and funny, and at the same time they are both on the same page as far as technical aspects! Idol feels relaxed and easy…I like that, fits my personality perfect! 🙂

  11. Hi Vonnie,
    How have you been?

I don’t recall ever laughing so much watching the audition rounds. I used to watch this part of the season just so I would know what was going on later in the competition but this year has been very entertaining so far. I’m pretty sure Harry was dropped on his head as a child. That boy ain’t right!

Nashville has been star studded this year including our own Kellie Clarkson. I know you have been watching… right?

  12. Oh yeah. I know MCL is loving all the guitars were seeing this season. There not just for WGs anymore.

  13. Lol…Yep! Pretty sure Harry has a flat spot!!! When he held that guy like a baby…omgosh! Funny stuff.

I’ve been good, or at least I’ve tried to be!!! How about you? I am still watching Nashville…love the music, however, seems they are giving us less music and more soap opera! Love the Stella sisters whenever they sing. Yeah! Wish Kelly would have sang while she was there! Looks like Brad Paisley is going to do a cameo too…even though his wife just left, or did she???????

I know right…everyone has a guitar this year, except for our little Harry; he has a piano!!! Lol
