  1. Thanks for the heads-up.
I’ve listened to each song and it’s gonna be an interesting (hopefully not boring) evening.
Kree is taking a big chance singing Underwood’s “See You Again” because she (Carrie) was just on the show performing that song a few weeks ago.
Can’t wait to see/hear how Candice is gonna change the lyrics to Bruno’s “When I Was Your Man” (fingers crossed).
And it seems that Amber and Angie is playing it safe in the first round with “Diamonds” and “Just Give Me a Reason”.

So for the second round, they are slowing it down a bit more to soulful/jazzy ballads.
Hopefully Candice can pull off “I’ve Changed” like Eva Cassidy.
Amber going back to earlier song that sparked memories of why she’s in the top four.
Hope Kree can jazz-up “Stormy Weather” like Gladys Knight.
And Angie better belt out “Someone to Watch Over Me”. Because IMO, that song has a few boring moments.

At this point, everybody is a winner.

  3. On MJ’s blog she said that Harry Connick Jr. will be back as guest mentor! He will be a great help especially with the great pop classic songs.

I wanted Amber to sing “Someone to Watch Over Me”, but I think she will do a great job with “My Funny Valentine”. Melinda Doolittle did it so memorably some years back, but I think Amber could really blow the roof off the place if she sings it the way I think she can.

I am dating myself, but I thought of Lena Horne when I saw that Kree was singing “Stormy Weather”! I will have to listen to Gladys Knight’s version. I guess Kree will try to blues it up and countrify it. However, I don’t think she did herself any favors by picking a Carrie Underwood song for her current choice. Does she really want to risk being compared to Carrie?

Candace picking that Bruno Mars song was quite interesting. I had to listen to it on youtube. I am eager to see what she does with it.. I listend to Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn’s versions of “You’ve Changed”. Now I will have to check out Eva Cassidy. This song should be great for Candace.

  4. Amber is playing it safe by choosing a song she’s already performed on the show. She’s playing it safe and not taking risks. I love Candice’s choices. Some take it for granted that she’ll do a terrific job. I believ she will. Kree needs to be in that TOP 3 and is risking that by singing a Carrie Underwood song unless she’s changing it up. I don’t think Angie has any worries with her huge fan base.

I believe it wil be Amber going home regardless how much praise she gets from the judges. They over did it last week!

  5. Kariann yep Amber is playing it safe, but judges will not call her on it. How many times did Jordan sing her show stopper? I believe 3.

I believe that the over praise of Amber coupled with the over critiques of Candice have whittled away some of Candice’s fans to Amber.

Kree picked up all country fans now.

Regardless of fanbase I think Angie picked really good songs and is going to slay them. IMO Angie has had the biggest growth arc. Her over singing and musical theater non-connecting approach has been fixed and she is now connecting and touching people. At least she is me.

  6. I think Amber has given up to be honest! As much as I love her, she lacks the confidence and skill to override the other singers. Even Kree.

Kree’s technique is solid although her style is too generic for my liking. But, she is trying her best. It’s just that she can only go so far because what she is lacking one can’t teach. But, she may surprise us. She surprised me last week and then. the judges surprised me with their critiques of her. Far too nasty.

  7. In baseball, the longer you go into the season, the harder it is to raise your batting average substantially. Similarly, I think what we have seen so far in terms of performance unevenness and appeal will continue both among the contestants and within the contestants’ individual performances. I don’t think any of the contestants is going to make a major singing or performance change of the kind we might all like to see. I think there are potential things that Connick can do for the “then” performances, but I don’t know how successful he will be given how late it is in the metaphorical season. Connick’s importance to me here is as an actor more than as a singer, so for example I think Amber and Kree need mini-acting lessons so they can project not in the way that has been failing for the audience and the judges, at least for the one big “then” song. Amber could actually sing to a photograph for most of the song, not to the audience, and get more positive emotion, as Judy Garland did in You Made me Love You.She could have people crying. (She can’t sing the same song the same way twice. It just won’t work.) Kree just needs more expressive hip, arm and hand movement that matches the song (Marcel Marceau where are you) and people will think it the greatest performance thay have ever seen. (Go back and watch Angie’s hip movement in Bring me to Life. It may have been the best thing all season that no one ever noticed but was completely essential to that song’s presentation.) If Connick can get Angie to play the piano super slow and pensively, sing the song without looking at the camera at all and just get lost in a song, people will go crazy. If Connick can get Candice singing beside a piano, strip her down and minimize her runs, people will go crazy. For him, and them, I think it’s all in the acting this week, especially as it looks “then” songs are in the pimp half of the show – what people remember. Best actress in a supporting role (to the song) wins the night, the way it has been trending all season.

  8. DonB – way to dissect these performances! Bravo! And you brought up one thing that really irked me about Angie’s performance last week at the piano – too much camera work. I didn’t like it and it seemed so scripted – which of course it was because you have to know where to look.

  9. MCL,

I was wondering why you think that Amber has given up. Why would she want to after having come so far? I didn’t see her as lacking confidence. It’s hard reading on sites like MJ’s blog because of all the hate being directed at Amber. It’s quite appalling but somehow it seems to happen every season. I made a comment on MJ’s blog to the effect that Amber had a better voice than Pink and there were some pretty nasty responses. So they think Pink has the better voice. As I have said many times here, I am not impressed with the current singers today. Pink definitely has talent, but I don’t love her voice.

Last week Angie doing Jessie J was considered safe since she did her songs in earlier rounds. Now Amber’s choices are considered safe or dissed in some other way. She can’t win for losing. She is getting trashed so much. I just hope these young women don’t read the online blogs.

I still think it was a huge mistake for Kree to take on a Carrie Underwood song. She isn’t going to do it better than Carrie. Others have tried in the past and failed when trying to do justice to one of her songs.

  10. Mindy – maybe, because I wasn’t feeling well last week, my perception is a bit distorted. But I found Amber really nervous and just lacking confidence. And her song selections were not the best.

Having said that, I just reviewed her Las Vegas performance of My Funny Valentine and am enjoying a great big plate of crow right now. She is repeating this song for a reason – because it is really, really, really, reeeeaaaaally good!

And I love her Pink song. Good choice!

Kree doing Carrie is a recipe for disaster. Not good but she may surprise us.

I think Harry Connick is going to open up these ladies – really make them sparkle. I may be wrong, but, he was good last season, so I can’t imagine that he won’t deliver tomorrow.

  11. MCL,

Now I have to go check out Amber’s Las Vegas performance of this song! I think it’s smart to go with something that works. There’s more than a bit of hypocrisy in the comments about Amber playing it safe by singing a song she did in an earlier round. Angie did the same thing in singing another Jessie J song. It worked very well for her.

I think this is a time to go to your strengths. I also think that Amber’s choice of a Pink song could hardly be called safe! The song is actually a duet and it will be interesting to see how she sings it as a solo.

I honestly think that people just trash those they don’t like and cheer anything that their favorite does. That’s kind of what happens at this point in the Idol season.

I just don’t think that Kree is going to be able to do Carrie Underwood better than she would. Of course she could surprise us, but I just think it was not a good idea to even go there. We will have to see.

I got the sense last week that all four of these young ladies are showing a bit of wear and tear at this point in the competition. I thought Amber did well with “Power of Love”, maybe hitting the high notes a bit strained at times. However, “MacArthur Park” didn’t turn out to be a good choice. I thought it kind of overwhelmed her.

I do think that Harry Connick Jr. will help these young women. I remember how he helped Lee Dewyze come out and give one of his best performances.

Do you think he would make a good judge for the show? I think at this point, they have nowhere to go but up!

  12. Mindy- absolutely Harry should make a phenomenal judge. He is a great musician and actor. How can they go wrong? And he seems sensible and focused.

I think Amber will wow everyone tomorrow. Her version if “My Funny Valentine” is just exquisite. How can she go wrong? She can’t. Smart, smart move.

Angie will probably win this thing though. She has three times the Twitter followers than the others.

  13. I just saw an article on line that says that Candice has a personality coach. Supposedly Mariah encouraged her to do that and supposedly the other girls are not very happy about it. The problem is that this was an article from Fox News and I rarely believe much of what they say. Has anyone else heard anything about this? Is it true?
