About Masterclass Lady
Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli.
When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler.
She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8.
In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman.
In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins.
In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright.
In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins.

You were absolutely right, MCL! Amber did have a moment tonight. I’ve always liked Amber’s voice, but I was stunned that she did that Streisand song so well. Definitely my favorite of the night. I also really liked Candice’s jazzy interpretation of the Paula Abdul song, “Straight Up.” I actually always hated that song, but enjoyed Candice’s version.

But, in truth, Angie won the night I thought. Both of her songs were so strong.

AMBER!!! Her performance was sublime. And for Randy to say it was probably the most difficult….WOW! It was certainly the best of the night, and Amber’s personal best. I think Candace’s “Believe” was next best. I’ve never heard anyone cover this song so amazingly since David Archuleta in Season 7. Way to go, Candice! STUNNING! I have to say I love me some Angie also! She certainly didn’t disappoint! Kree has never been one of my favs, but I must say I loved how she performed her second song. It was so heartfelt and lovely.

Question…Does these contestants not know what the theme’s are in advance? Candice sang “Love Song” last week…that song was in her birth year of ’89 and she could have sang it tonight!!!!!
I must be worn out from reality shows, cause tonight was not that great for me, I love Candice and just think she is stellar, but Straight up, really? I love her second song!
I am so sad already for tomorrow night…I don’t want to see any of them go home! I guess at this stage of the game and with it being all girls it is going to be tough…my fear, someone really good who should be in the finale will go home because of judges comments……..

I don’t see Amber as the next new thing…there is something in her phrasing that puts me off, she sounds strained at her upper range…I don’t know, I have alot of the same thing with Angie at times!!!
And whaaaattttt was Nikkie wearing tonight? It is pretty bad when the camera won’t go below her chin…

MCL can and probably will comment. Angie did two things tonight I don’t think she has done before. Vocally, she dropped way down from her normal high key. It was noticeable in both songs and the key drop in and of itself led to a different performance. More believable from my standpoint. Kudos to whomever was coaching her. I thought she grew up tonight. Performance-wise she stopped doing coquettish facials and got down to concentration and attitude. World of difference.

Don – I thought her voice still sat pretty high tonight but she uses so much head voice that sometimes this element adds a brighter sound to the vocal timbre.
But, she was totally in the pocket and basically was the star the show tonight. What a huge improvement. Those vocal coaches are amazing.

Finally Amber had a moment! When I heard that she would be singing “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life”, a song that Barbra Streisand did so memorably, I just knew it would be great! So beautifully interpreted, wonderful phrasing, emotion and feeling and gorgeous vocals! She is growing into her own. I just love the sound of her voice! So proud of her!
The worst part of the show were the judges! Horrible pimping and shameless shilling! Janelle got the worst of it, as expected. I have some very strong opinions that differ considerably from what the judges said, but I don’t know that I feel comfortable expressing them. Suffice to say that I did not agree with their critiques for a few of the performances. Nothing Janelle sang would have pleased them, that was obvious! I just cannot stand it when they are being dishonest. There’s nothing wrong with Janelle, it’s merely that the judges and TPTB want Kree as their designated country singer.
I think there were some instances where even these talented young women struggled with songs by Mariah, Whitney and Celine. It reminds us just how extraordinary these female singers truly were.
I do think that Angie stepped it with her performances tonight. I felt much more of an emotional connection and an absence of the posing and theatrical facial expressions. I will say that I don’t really love the tone and sound of her voice. It sounds harsh to my ears. However, she is quite technically gifted and that skill was on full display with two challenging songs. I would have called her the star of the night until I heard Amber’s final performance. There is no denying the brilliance and magic of that moment.
If I am being honest, I think that Kree struggled with the Celine song. I think the song was too big for her voice. She was having trouble with some of those high notes. I also thought that Candace struggled with that Mariah/Whitney song in her second performance. As good as she is, there were still some points where she seemed to strain on the high notes. Amber didn’t seem as comfortable singing the Mariah song for her first performance. It shows just how high the bar has been set by divas and legends like Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. I loved that Mariah gave a shout-out to the late Whitney Houston tonight.
Randy was right when he said that Amber sang the toughest song so far. I still cannot get over how this girl can take on a song so complex in melody and key changes and just seem to float over it with such grace and ease. The girl is scary good!

I had to jump back on here after I listened to some of the performances again. I think that Angie’s emotional commitment to “I’ll Stand By You” is what made that performance, because hearing it again some of the high notes sounded shrill and kind of harsh. This is a tough song to pull off and I don’t know that anyone has ever matched Chrissie Hynde’s original with the Pretenders. I think that Angie’s second performance of Beyoncé’s “Halo” was much better vocally. She showed a different side of her and I thought she was vocally more comfortable in this song.
I feel for Janelle. Her first performance seemed quite real and lovely to me. I thought she captured the emotion of the song and seemed more comfortable with her guitar. I was surprised that Keith didn’t think she connected. I don’t think Dolly Parton’s “Dumb Blondes” was a good second choice. She has so many other songs that could have worked much better for Janell

I don’t know what happened, but I couldn’t finish my last post. I was just saying that there were many other good Dolly Parton songs that might have worked better for Janelle, but it won’t matter because the judges aren’t going to like anything from her at this point.
There is talk on blog sites that the judges will use the save this week. It has to do with the number of weeks left. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out tomorrow night.

I think most people have difficulty speaking when they are emotionally torn, as at funerals. I don’t know how singers can sing in such circumstances without constricting their throats. I think Angie was emotional in a way we don’t normally associate with her because of the explosions in Boston. She waited for silence before she started the Pretenders’ song – not her usual intro – and then she made the dedication. I had doubts she would even do a passable job on the song when she made the dedication. I chalked up any moments in the song that people may have thought were off to the effect of emotion on her voice and throat. I don’t know that many people actually considered that.
