Creating The Annette (Funicello) Sound: [Video]

I found this video (featured below) so fascinating. The late Annette Funicello explains how the distinct Annette Sound associated with her singing was created.

Apparently, she had a small voice so, to broaden the timbre, she basically recorded the song then sang live with the song – basically singing back to it, as she explains.

Walt Disney was the person to catapult her singing career. Prior to this, she was cast as a Mickey Mouse Club member based on her overall performing skills.

Nowadays, with technology so advanced in the world of music, a little tweak called “adding reverb” would take care of this problem. Or, let’s face it, one could just lip sync to a performance- enhanced track.

What a world! Is it any wonder that, with every passing of a star from the baby-boomer age, music is moving closer and closer to becoming a virtual medium in every way, shape or form?

Have a listen to Annette’s explanation of how the “Annette Sound” was created. What a beautiful, dignified and fascinating lady!

  1. Rosanne, I haven’t seen this anywhere! Thank you so much for putting it here. So many blogs have dozens upon dozens of pages of tribute to Annette. We Baby Boomers grew up with her and into our teens, we saw her movies. I didn’t realize she made 8 movies with Frankie Avalon. How sad they had there reunion in 1987 and that’s when she started to have very early symptoms of MS.

I am so sadden by her death. Like so many, I couldn’t wait to get home and watch the Mickey Mouse Club. Later, it was “Spin and Marty”. The Beach movies were often standard for early dating experiences. What a lady, truly a class act Annette was. Too bad so many young celebrities believe they have to do things viewed as trashy, to attract attention.

How sad so many years of her life were destroyed by MS. Now, she is free to run with the wind as she meets with our Lord. RIP Annette.

  2. I am glad you enjoyed the article. I just happened upon this video while browsing through YouTube and it intrigued me. I always wondered why they “toyed” with her voice. Seemed so strange considering it was during a time when everything was performed live and with real, untampered sound amplification.

Interesting and neat that they found a workaround to enrichen her tiny voice.
