Vocal Masterclass Discussion For Season 3 Of The Voice: The Top Four Perform

Update 7:27 P.M. Via The Voice’s Facebook Page:
Michael Buble will be performing on The Voice and a special reunion from Team Blake is scheduled during tonight’s broadcast.

This is Semi-Final Week on both The Voice and The X Factor.

Of the two shows, the most exciting sing-off is happening on tonight’s episode of The Voice, featuring Terry McDermott and Cassadee Pope from Team Blake and Trevin Hunte and Nicholas David from Team Cee Lo.

All four singers are excellent and each offers something different in style and genre.

However, in my perfect world, I would have switched out Amanda Brown for Cassadee Pope and Dez Duron for Terry McDermott

As it stands, all the singers mentored by Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera have been eliminated.

The Voice airs on NBC from 8:00 – 9:00 P.M. on Monday followed by the Results Show at the same time and place on Tuesday.

So, who are you rooting for tonight?

  1. I would prefer your lineup as well but it should be a good semi final. Nicholas is still my guy. Don’t forget the Buble Christmas special following the Voice tonight.

  4. they all seemed to think trevin did well, but it seemed ‘strange’ to me..restrained maybe and he’s not a restrained kind of singer. or like he had something in his mouth. and wow, that was the first time i really enjoyed cassadee. nicholas was great, but it is cassadee that moved me. i can’t believe i’m saying that.

  5. I would have switched Trevin and Nicholas for Dez and Cody. From Day 1, I have been a fan of Cassadee and Terry McD. But what do I know, I was rooting for Juliette last year from her blind audition to the finals and nada. The past two years have been Trevin type singers who won. Nothing unique about them, they are just good gospel type singers and there are enough of them out there already. Just my opinion.

  6. I hope you guy were able to see the top 4 on Carson Daly’s show “Last Call” early this morning. Despite the short comings some of them might have or our favorites that have fallen by the wayside, this is a very thoughtful, intelligent, diverse and talented group. I think a lot more of each of them after seeing them in a casual talk format.

I agree that Cassadee had a good performance tonight, but I didn’t think she really connected with the song until about the last 30 seconds or so. That part was outstanding. I think Blake will pull her toward the country pop genre. That’s a very loyal audience and Cassadee has a good feel for it.

Terry could always join a Beatles cover band. His two best performances have been covers of Beatles songs sung by Paul. This was his best so far. I would like to see something that shows me who he is artistically. There are a lot of good rock cover singers in the US.

Trevin keeps leaving me feeling like he has a lot more to offer. Wrong song choice and a little off pitch here and there. He has an enormous gift but even if he wins, I’m not sure he was ready for this competition. He doesn’t seem to have sorted out what type of music suits him best at this point.

I have enjoyed Nicholas every time he has performed, from his blind audition through tonight’s performance. He pours his heart into it and has a great, unique tone to his voice. He is seldom perfect and tonight was no exception but I sure hope he makes it into the top three.

At the present time Cassadee is #1 on iTunes with Terry at #3, Nicholas is at #7 and Trevin is at #45.

It was good to see Suzanna Choffel back tonight with team Blake. Cassadee beat her out but I still think she should have won.

  8. gene, i’ve never watched carson’s show, it sounds like i really missed something. i wish i had known to record it. were they on the whole time? i wonder if it is on the web? i’ve come to like carson more this year, maybe a lot. he seems genuinely to care about the artists. i note how he touches them. whereas when khloe touches on xfactor, it almost seems like she is clinging. i was shocked to see the Voice artists charting on itunes already, it normally doesn’t happen that quickly. i have to check the separate categories yet. this is the second time ever that a Voice person has hit #1, both times it has been cassadee. and terry is still at number 3. nicholas is up one, to #6, and trevin is up ten to #35. i really did miss amanda.

  10. MCL, I think this is perhaps the first time I have ever disagreed with you (ha ha!). As much as I thought Dez was a cutie-pie and sweet kid, I didn’t hear any substance or depth to his singing, I’m sorry, I just didn’t get his vocal ability although I think the young girls could give him a healthy career.

Nicholas David sounds like a lesser version of Boz Scaggs to me. Does anyone remember him? I’m surprised no one has mentioned it before. Perhaps it’s my Bay Area upbringing that keeps Boz on my radar.

Trevin Hunte gets my vote any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

This brings me to Cassadee Pope. I like her, I really do. And I think Blake got it right last night when he said she has a unique way of story-telling with her singing. In that sense, she reminds me a bit of Carrie Underwood. Even though Cassadee is not a country singer, she could do well in the cross-over market.

  11. Hunter,
I don’t know how much of the interview with the contestants I may have missed. I recorded the Michael Buble Christmas special and was watching it when I saw the ad for Carson’s show. I switched to live TV at that point and they were on. The remained on for another 20 minutes or so. It was very casual and each of them had plenty of time to express their thoughts. Good stuff. Maybe you can find it on NBC’s site or elsewhere. Carson does seem to have a genuine interest in the contestants and there well being. He has grown on me as well. The charts stand in the same order at this time but the positions have moved up to 1,2, 4 and 35. I’m not sure what the cut off time is. The bonus points will be hard for Trevin to overcome. I agree with the bonus system, BTW. There is no better gauge of a performer’s commercial success than the willingness of people to spend their money on them. Votes are cheap.

Suzanna Choffel was one of the most talented contestants I have seen. She is at a high level of development in both singing and writing. She also has a very pleasant and authorities speaking style. There is a video at her website where she is visiting at a radio station for an hour or more, singing some of her material and doing a long interview that is pretty good. Amanda was very good as well and I was sad to see her go. Did I mention before that in addition to Adele, who they mentioned frequently on the show, Amanda toured with Alicia Keyes at the same time that last year’s winner (what’s his name) was with her. Some of the videos for Amanda on You Tube you can see the two of them sitting next to each other.

    Janey,
Boz Skaggs is a good comparison for Nicholas. He reminds me more of Leon Russell, especially when he is playing the piano. There is also a little Leon Redbone and a touch of Randy Neumann in there. I don’t see him as copying anyone though. I think that is just the way he is. He is the most interesting performer I have seen on any of these competition shows in a long time. It seemed odd to me that he got only one turn around at the audition. Blake and Adam were both very much into his audition but sat on their buttons. The music he does on the show is nothing like his original stuff

  12. Janey…loved me some Boz Scaggs back in the day…had their 8 track and kept it along with Kenny Logins rotated in my player!!!

Man, I miss those days, now you’ve reminded me of a great band…I’m gonna need to go in search of some of their music!!!

I don’t think of Boz when I hear Nicholas though! I can’t put my finger on who he sounds like!!! But I will go back and take a listen to see if maybe he does sound like Boz!!!

  13. Janey…OMGosh! You hit the nail on the head…just went and listened to Nicholas then on to Boz’s Liddo Shuffle and Low Down…Yeppers I see or hear the “sounds like”

  14. Janey – I like Cassadee but am not in love with her as much as I am in Nicholas and Trevin. I still think Cee Lo has the better Team at this point. We don’t need yet another country singer to win yet another contest. Let’s hope Tate doesn’t win The X Factor. Hahaha

  15. MCL… 😦 Tate needs to win X Factor…Carly is young and talented, she will be a Disney success story…Tate will go back to a 9-5 job and we will miss out on a great voice!!

  16. Vonnie – Tate has a wonderful voice and backstory. My problem is this – I am tired of country artists winning these shows. I like country music along with the rest of you but, honestly, if we are thinking X Factor, I think Carly has that in spades.

However, I would, not be disappointed if Tate wins. I like him. I don’t want the groups to win. They are all hype with little style or substance.

  17. Lol…it does seem as if Country Artists are winning all of the shows! Makes me wonder about the pop industry, it seems to have hit a snag, it is getting boring and predictable! Country music seems to be the most popular thing going these days, funny thing is I don’t listen to country music, but I like Tate and Scotty! I hear Scotties Christmas album is doing great!

Did you get to watch Michael Buble’s Christmas show last night…what an amazing voice!!!

  18. Vonnie – I am waiting for a special time to watch my Buble. No distractions. His voice is beautiful. Naturally beautiful. Did you know that he has many close relatives right here in my hometown? And I know all of them. Haha. All Italiano – like me.

  19. I like all kinds of music, but Tate is the only contestant who has been spot on with every song he has sung. Never pitchy, great voice, sings with such emotion. I don’t know what other competitions you have watched, but Carrie Underwood goes back aways, Other than Carrie, the only o ther country winner I can remember is Scotty McCreery and he made me a country fan. Nothing unique about gospel types which X-Factor has been past two years and now Trevin. Cassadee has sang some country tunes for Blakes, but she calls herself pop/rock.

BY THE WAY, I AM A HUGE DAVID ARCHULETA FAN!!!!!! JUST SAYIN and I’m 71 y/o :O)

  20. Maybe it’s time for an all country singing competition show? Let them all sing against each other. Maybe I should pitch this idea…lol.

  21. It’s been done several times already. I believe “Nashville Star” was the one that Miranda Lambert placed third in. The duo Joey and Rory also placed third on another show called “Can You Duet.” Simon Lithgo and his son did another one last year during Idol’s off season but the name escapes me now.

  24. No, unfortunately, I never met Michael. But his grandparents and I think his parents (not sure) use to visit here and vice versa. But I was a fan before I even knew that he had this Timmins connection.

I was speaking about him years ago and that’s when a family member said – oh he’s related to so and so and so and so. And I was floored. So, since then, his family members have shared some wonderful stories about Michael and his family.

I know that his family members had a special meet and greet with him a few years ago in Toronto and one of them brought me back a special memento from Michael from the concert. A picture and program that he gave out to special guests. So thoughtful and sweet of them.

  25. That was very sweet of them to bring you a memento from his concert…I think you will enjoy his Christmas show, I enjoyed his guests, but would have rather just heard him sing…

    Wow! Trevin went home?!?!?!

  26. Vonnie – it was inevitable I guess. But, after all these excellent singers this season, the only one left that moves and impresses me is Nicholas. His voice is so beautiful and his soul so genuine.
