Vocal Masterclass Discussion For Season 2 Of The X Factor: The Top 8

20121002-204334.jpg
The Top 8 are scheduled to perform on The X Factor Wednesday on Fox from 8:00 – 10:00 P.M. with the results to be revealed on Thursday at 8:00 P.M.

Honestly, I don’t know what to say about this show anymore. I really don’t.

The majority of the singers’ vocals are so off pitch that I cringe when I listen to them. If that wasn’t embarrassing enough but then we have to sit and watch the judges salivate over and lavish praise on these poorly guided singers.

Never mind The X Factor, the majority of these singers can’t sing or perform. I mean – why do the group acts have background vocals? Why? Please explain. Is it to hide their inability to sing in perfect harmony as a group?

And stop crying and whining on television. I cannot stand it anymore. Yes, some of these singers have had tough lives but this is no place to air your dirty laundry or life challenges. Sorry!

Enjoy the show – what’s left of it – and add your comments when you can.

  1. “I mean – why do the group acts have background vocals? Why?

Too funny. I had the same thought myself. Last week I think the five girls had eight backing vocalist.

It seems that Demi must have bought Paige a pitch pipe since last week and for the style of performer that she wants to be, she was pretty close to getting it all together. I thought Demi’s advice to her was good but she got by with ignoring it pretty well anyway. She swaps places with Diamond on the bus home. Diamond had managed to slip off the bus last week but is back on tonight. Cee Cee is on board on general principals even if she did get into the neighborhood of singing / shouting on key for the first time. She must have gotten a pitch pipe as well, but didn’t use it as much as Paige. I refuse to take the groin groping Emblem Three serious so I din’t pay much attention to the guys. Even if they stood erect like men and kept their hands to themselves; no scratch that, DIDN”T keep their hands ON themselves, having sung a Monkees’ song would have been enough to put them on the bus stop for home. Fifth Harmony is still standing in a straight line with everybody trying to be the lead singer so they are pretty close to the bus stop. Vino went backward this week, possibly enough to slip to fourth place. The song choice should have been good for him but he ruined it with the goofy arrangement. Carly Rose sort of did the same thing but on a higher plane. Good song choice but the very recognizable melody of her song was lost in the arrangement with no discernible improvement over the original. She had moments of interesting and fairly impressive vocals in the course of her performance that were good enough for second place for this week. Who is doing the arrangements on this show? This leaves Tate. If I were going to change his performance I would recommend that he put “Tate “on his guitar strap instead of TS. There wasn’t much wrong with it otherwise. I think the only reason that Tate and Carly didn’t perform last was to keep people from tuning in for just the last 15 minutes.

There were other good features to the show. Simon dressed like a grown up and I liked the top that Britney was wearing and maybe one more thing… no, that was about it.

I guess Cee Cee and Diamond are on the bubble.

  2. Really Brittany, you give Adele to Carly after I pleaded for you to give it to Beatrice??? Ach!!! Whatever!

    Carly ruined that song…Blah!
    Vi~NO…..Just No!

    Tate for the win!!!

Gene…I agree with your thoughts on the show! Emblem 3 will be around for a while I am afraid…the teenie weenie votes will keep them there and LA see’s powerball jackpot potential in these kids, I certainly don’t get it!!!

Fifth Harmony…I like them alot, but you are right there is no direction; I see Simon trying to take them in Il Divo’s same direction, but these girls would benefit from one being the lead while the rest were back up/ harmony…

Speaking of backup singers~~~ who was singing backup for Tate? That was awful.

  4. What a mess this show has become. And I honestly cannot take one more cover of an Adele song. These young girls should be singing happy, fun, energetic songs or inspiring ballads, not torch songs . Ridiculous.

  5. Wow !! I’m with everybody here on X-Factor as I have been saying every time I post here.

Amen Rosanne. I’m only going to look at it to the end this season to see if who I predicted to win will win. Thats the only reason. To me the majority of the talent is lousy.

    Vonnie ‘

To me Carly, to me was good but it was forgettable moment so maybe I agree a little bit. No shining moment there.

Re; Tate, well the guitar finally appeared and once again the winners bill has been filled and X-factor now has its WGWG . Im with you Gene. The background was totally unnecessary

And Vino, in my opinion one of his lower moments. Its just seems like LA doesn’t know how to showcase these guys. I don;t know what went wrong with his first choice but “Loving Feeling” definitely did’nt turn out.. I think LA did Vino a big disservice

Emblem 3 – I just like watching those guys perform. Its seems like they are having a ball. I could see them being the next big boy band but I don’t see them winning. Little more grooming needed. The don;t compare at all to Tate. Tate in my opinion is a pro

Its time for Cee Cee and Fifth Harmony to go.

And Paige … I think last night told the whole story of whats been happening on each show with her. Those great big over the top productions have all have been her own ideas . Demmi was absolutely right. Those productions were “turn offs”. They made her look like she “thinks more highly of herself then she ought”. Shes already wants to be seen as a diva before she has even earned diva status. Heck, shes already talking to her mentor like she doesn’t need a mentor. Wow !! Amazing !! If she is already that great of a diva then why is she on an amateur show. I hope this time the audience gives her the boot. After her total disregard of what Demmi said , she should have been kicked off. Divas don’t need mentors and audience votes. Get off the stage and come out here and see if the world sees you as a diva. You don’t tell your mentor I;m going to do it my own way. Ugg !! How disrespectful !! Thats how she has been the whole time but the way she talk to Demmi last night to me was over the top. Shes too grand. For that to me she can’t be kicked off fast enough. I’ve never been critical of any singer on any of theses show like that. so I hope tonight it her and Cee Cee

  10. i feel absolutely horrible, like someone has died. as i said i was a vino supporter from the first minute i heard him sing. he *never* brought that same magic to the live show as he had in the audition rounds until tonight with his ‘save me’ song (which was badly cut up). LA, i think, didn’t know how to work with vino because vino never got to ‘do vino’. he ‘did him’ tonight. if he’d been able to sing like that the whole time, i think he’d still be there.

  11. Hunter…my heart goes out to you, I know how hard it is to see a favorite go home! I think you are right, LA just didn’t know how to mentor him, this may be why he only has one pony still in this race!!!

MCL…I would like to add Adam, Blake and Celo to the idol judges table along with Keith Urban…

  12. Vonnie – I think Vino is an awesome singer , especially his performance tonight but LA did that to him last night like. Thats what I think Demmi and Simon judged him on and they both expressed it yesterday. I think when LA changed the song at the last minute he broke his confidence…and he told him if it didn’t work he;d take full responsibility so now he owes him. Like I said earlier it was indeed one of his lowest moments.

So glad Paige is gone. She did that all by herself. It wasn’t her performance. It was her attitude as I said earlier. She said we haven’t seen the last of her. LOL . She still thinks shes grand. She doesn’t get it. And Cee Cee …she keeps getting the sympathy vote. Shes definitely not there because of her talent. Diamond is a much better singer. I really hope Cee Cee will be one of the next to go. Then we can start having a real competition.

I declared Tate the winner when I first saw him and when I first heard Carly I knew she’d be up there to. Diamond has improved greatly and so has Emblem 3. All 4 deserve to be in the top 4 .

Why in the world would LA give a Hall and Oats song to Vino…all the soulful songs out there that he could have given him!! So sad…

I think Tate and Carly will be the top two…I would like to see Tate win…I like Carly, but like Tate better…I don’t even listen to Country music, but like him…hmmm! I seem to always pick the country singer, why then don’t I listen to it??????? Lol

Lol, yes please! Send CeCe home…where is vote for the worse when you need them!

  14. Tate needs to be shopping for a new house in the Nashville area. If it were my five million dollar check to write it would definitely have his name on it. He’s been solid since the first audition and there is no ambiguity about what style he will perform or “who he is as an artist.” He would be a great investment. He will go back and forth with Carly on the leader board from week to week but I can’t see anyone else winning. Carly will have a very bright career but I don’t think she is nearly as ready or even settled on the direction she wants to go in as Tate.

I’m sorry your guy was cut Hunter. I didn’t expect that tonight. For me, Vino has been in third place by default. He wasn’t good enough for first or second but he was better than the rest of the field. That’s a pretty precarious position to be in. His instant drop from third place to seventh place suggests to me that no one besides Tate and Carly is receiving a lot of votes and there is very little difference in vote totals between third and eighth place. I liked Vino pretty well but he never rose to the level of his first audition for me. I couldn’t see writing him a 5 million dollar check.

I haven’t cared much for the feud, whether real or staged between Simon and Demi but when he said that “he” had sold 300 million records she should have said how many of them had “your” name in large letters on the front cover? While she’s still wet behind the ears at least her laurels are for her own work. Simon only leaches off of the talents of others.

    Karl,
Good call on Paige. I didn’t think she would go home this week. Demi gave her good advice and she blew it off like she knew better than her mentor. I will say that she finally gave a decent performance and I didn’t really see her going home YET, as long as Cee Cee is still there. But gone she is. I can’t say that the order maters much until the final two.

    Vonnie,
Hall and Oats did a lot of what is known as “Blued Eyed Soul.” Vino sang a Righteous Brothers song last night though. Just a fun fact, Bill Medley from the Righteous Brothers has a daughter named McKenna who is a singer that’s not half bad. She did a duet with Michael Grimm who won AGT a few years ago that is very good. I think the reason that you “don’t like” country music is simply because they play mostly C**P on the radio. You know who the better artist are but they don’t get a lot of air play.

  15. thanks for the sympathy vonnie and gene. i just found out the Pulaski county and two surrounding counties of where vino is from had no internet last night. i don’t know if phones were down, but if internet was, i’d think phones were too. wow. that would explain the drop.

  16. Didn’t Hall and Oats do a cover of that song???

    Like

  17. Vonnie,
Hall and Oats did cover “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” about 15 years after the Righteous Brothers did the original. Their version was pretty much identical to the R Bros whose original was number one in both the US and the UK. There was nothing wrong with the song choice, it wasn’t too old; Carly sang a song from 1939, both of the original duos were extremely successful and well respected in the industry and they both had good to great chart success with this song. Whether the R Bros or Hall and Oates, it was the mess that Vino made of it that didn’t sell. If he had recorded his version in 1964 would anyone remember it today?

What I don’t get is how Cee Cee made it past week one. She hasn’t had one good performance and is the most out of tune singer on the show. Even her sob story falls behind some of the others. I can’t imagine who votes for her or why.

It was sympathy votes. The same thing I always talk about on the other shows. The judges curse. Didn’t somebody say “pack you bags”. Well it always happens a judge trashes somebody’s favorite and in the votes the audience fights back and votes more for their favorite. It has nothing to do with talent. Its about the audiences favorites. Notice: Any week shes in the bottom, the following week she moves up on the leader board. That has been going on for the last 4 weeks. She was down first then the next she moved up. Last week she was at the bottom this week she moved back up .Her supporters now think shes safe because Paige is out but unfortunately next week she’ll be back down with either Diamond or 5th Element. This is it for her. I just don;t see her as threat at all to 5th Element, Carly or Tate. (young girls and country fans anre the larger voting audiences) So she’ll finally be gone !! Alleluia !! It has nothing to do with talent, but votes. If she makes it through next week then the larger audiences for these shows have changed ..but I don’t think so .

I have the Righteous Brothers version in my collection…love them! I also like H&O version as well…not so much Vino’s version, but, I didn’t think that would take him from a comfortable third spot to a bus ticket home…

Yes! Oh My! Send CeCe home already; and Demmi was worried about Jiiyan’s fragile state??? Really? Jillyan was an awesome singer!! Enough with the sympathy votes already…send the girl home!

Are you still tuning in to Nashville? Love that show!

  20. Opps I meant to say ” I just don;t see her (Cee Cee) as threat at all to EMBLEM 3, Carly or Tate (young girls and country fans are the larger voting audiences). The young girls will vote for Emblem 3 and Carly and the country music fans will work on Tate.

I see those as being the top three also!!! It’s been a while sing America has had a boy band; I guess the Jonas Brothers being the last..and look at the craze they stirred up!

I wouldn’t be shocked if they won the whole shebang!

Tate is still going to be a country music success where ever he places, the same with Carly…I can see Disney eating her up!

So I guess all in all…Tate, Carly, and Emblem 3 will be win win for X Factor!!!

  24. Vonnie and Karl,
I believe that in order for the fan backlash (sympathy votes) scenario to kick in a contestant first has to have fans. That’s where my question comes in. Why does Cee Cee have any fans at all? There have been a lot of out of tune singers on this show, as MCL has pointed out. The worst three in my view have been Diamond, Paige and Cee Cee. Of the three Diamond has delivered one good performance last week and Paige was good this week. Only Cee Cee remains constantly out of tune. Then there are her performances, her persona, her hair, her animal print face and the DRAMA. What is to like about this contestant? So where did the fans come from that “back lashed” and continue to keep her in the contest? Even Sanjaya Malakar had some physical appeal for the young girl voters to explain his reign of terror on Idol. This girl I just don’t get. She probably benefited this week by Paige’s disrespecting Demi’s good advice. All said, I don’t care who comes in third. I believe it’s a two horse race and everyone else finishes last.

Vonnie not only am I still watching Nashville but I WENT to Nashville since my last post. (Sorry for the delay) If I’m not mistaken the show wasn’t on last week and for some reason the latest episode available from “On Demand” is from 11/14/12. Was that the last episode to air? I’ve got the Righteous Brothers on vinyl. “You Don’t Know Me” was the song that Michael Grimm and McKenna Medley, daughter of Righteous Brother Bill Medley, did as a duet. It’s good stuff.

Did you go to the Bluebird? I think the song Julliette sang on Nashville was playing in a restaurant I was at this afternoon!!!

Yeah! I don’t get the CeCe votes either…she goes from being in the bottom three each week to moving up the leader board and Vino goes from third place to home and didn’t even get to pass go!!!

  26. Vonnie,
No, we didn’t go to the Bluebird this trip. We went to a Christmas concert at the farm of a husband and wife duo we like. They competed on another singing competition show about five years ago and that is where we first saw them. It would be sort of like you going to Scotty McCreary’s house for a show. They have a TV studio in a building that looks like a barn on their property and that is where the stage and seating is. Good show.

I just finished watching what I believe to be the latest episode of Nashville but her duet at the end with Riana James (sp) at the Ryman Auditorium is the only song that I recall Juliette singing. Maybe this wasn’t the latest episode. Is that the one that you heard on the radio?

The top ten of the X-Factor is an unprepared group of finalist with only a few exceptions. They all had a lot of potential but there are only a few that are ready for this opportunity. I liked Jenal Garcia (sp)also. I think Demi messed up what was special about her.

  27. Gene,

The song I heard was from one of the first episodes or so…it may even be the song that she and Deacon co-wrote on the back of the pick up truck!!! Lol

Yes! That was the latest Nashville episode…Rayn’s (Connie) singing is her actual voice no lipsyncing…but I’m not sure I would be a fan of her music if she were an artist…they took other unheard of’s and are making them into stars, I think they could have done the same with Rayna!!! But, Ah! Well, it’s their show! And I love it, so carry on!!!!!!!!! 🙂
