Vocal Masterclass Discussion For Season 2 Of The X Factor: The Top 10

The Top 10 are scheduled to perform on The X Factor Wednesday on Fox from 8:00 – 10:00 P.M. with the results to be revealed on Thursday at 8:00 P.M.

And, it will be a Thanksgiving Show this week, to commemorate the USA Thanksgiving celebrations this weekend. Wonderful idea. I was hoping this would happen. Good call, Simon Cowell.

This show is starting to heat up. Although the singers, overall, are not as talented as those on The Voice, this show has enjoyed a vast improvement over last year’s season.

The production is more tasteful and less obtrusive, the singers are (ahem) singing live and non-enhanced via technology and the judges, for the most part, are quite good – although Demi has to watch not to overstep her boundaries.

I still love Carly Rose Sonenclare. She was my favorite from Day One. I did, however, enjoy Emblem 3 and Vino Allen last week, as well as Tate Stevens.

Enjoy the show and add your comments when you can.

  1. Well that was an emotionally charged show. Most seemed to perform at their expected level, Tate and Vino were still good and the same ones were at the bottom of the heap. Two performers stepped up in my view; Diamond White was very solid for the entire length of her song, which I believe is the first time she has done so and she also delivered her song like a pro despite the high emotional impact that it had on her. Carly Rose was incredible. Is that a big enough word for it? I don’t think so. I felt like I was evolved in something very special. (Those darn allergies again)I would really like to know more about her creative process, whether it is all practiced and studied or if it is just rolling out of her heart and brain as we are watching. If she is handled correctly, I think she is destined (and you called it early on MCL) to make a very large mark on the music world. It was ironic that she sang “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” tonight because I think she has the potential to be a Judy Garland like figure. She will touch many hearts in her lifetime. She leaves her’s on the stage.

Happy Thanksgiving for all who will celebrate tomorrow!

  3. I actually found last night’s show unbearable. When they weren’t breaking down crying, they were singing flat as pancakes. And the groups were augmented with background tracks and , in one instance, a gospel choir. Ridiculous. Vino was the best of the night. Carly sang pretty well but I really did not like the arrangement of her song.

  4. i FF through the show just to ‘get an idea’ and all i saw was crying. i thought, ‘oh great, more manipulation’. 😦 i’ll watch more thoroughly (i think) later. it was sweet to see the younger sisters of beatrice so entranced with their sister’s singing.

  5. MCL, Gene and Hunter,

Tate, Beatrice and Fifth Harmony are my favorites! Song choice? You would think the professionals would be able to get it right, but, they are doing a horrible job; the contestants did better when they were picking their own songs!

    Brittany…Adele for Beatrice, okay?
    LA…Garth for Tate, okay?
Simon…Il Divo style for Fifth Harmony, okay?

Carly is at the bottom on dial idol…

  6. Rosanne and Hunter,

I’m with both of you. It was unbearable for me. Every time I saw one of the girls I kept thinking ..” please ..please don;t go there”. I was looking at Cee Cee and I heard the whining and finally at the end of the song she finally was able to get that one tear to come out that she’d been working on throughout the whole song. Then it finally made it.
Paige had her tear coming out of her left eye as soon as she walked out on stage. I thought the last act was just going to come out and start screaming and bo-whooing all over the place. Tonight, I wish they would send about 5 of them home.

    Gene,

I’m with you on Diamond. She has been one of the ones that I’ve just wanted to go home for good ..but last night, she was just spectacular !! I believed her tears, but it seems as if once all the other contestants saw her standing ovation they all said “I’m going to really show them some emotion” It seemed to me like the more emotion they tried to show the worst they got. Oh man …spare me.

I picked Tate from day one. I believe he is holding is spot rightfully so. Carly was great…but to me she is always great so having said that I don’t think she’s was any better the great. Vino …on the other hand … to me he stepped up his game. He was dressed nicer, he held back some of that overwhelming emotion. I;m with you Rosanne, if I had to pick the best of the night I’d go with Vino. I’m not just 100% if he can keep going in that same direction. And as far as Emblem 3, I just love watching those guys perform. They look like they;re just having a ball.

    Happy Thanksgiving everybody !!

  7. i miss lyric 145 (i had to look up that number). wow, i’m glad i checked in before the whole show was done or i would have missed the last 20 minutes because of football. i’m glad they continue to give the order of the voting, i really didn’t think they would. i don’t want to say too much so i won’t spoil anyone if you haven’t seen it yet. it is so painful to watch the beatrice thing, i think, ’13 is too young’…and then i think, ‘but carly rose is 13’.

I agree. I think they should just have a kids talent show. Its horrible. It was the same way last year when13 year old Rachel Crow got eliminated. Its awful. I had to turn away.

  9. Hi everyone! Yes, tonight’s elimination show was even more unbearable than last night’s performance show. They should have sent both CeCe and Beatrice home – the former because she is a drama queen of the 1st degree and the latter because she is not emotionally ready for this show. It is devastating to watch.

Simon really needs to step back and have an objective look at this show. It is a real mess. Just embarrassing actually.

  10. Rosanne – I agree. This is probably the last season for me. I can’t see it lasting.

  11. BrotherKarl – Yup! Me too. I’m pretty much done as well. And, truth be told, the readers are not interested.

American Idol is such a strong tradition and still garners attention year after year after year. The ratings have gone down for AI as well, but it still is the front runner out of all the singing competitions.

We shall see how it fares once The Voice enters its fourth season in January. Should be interesting.

  12. I did watch both shows this week and although there are some good singers, I just don’t like the way Simon manipulates the situation. He could care less about whether someone is fragile or not. I am surprised no one mentioned Brittany’s reaction towards Beatrice. She just stood there by her two eliminated kids and was not supportive.

I agree Carly has a good chance of some success. Maybe even on Broadway. I think Tate will be accepted by Country radio. I also feel Diamond has improved. I guess I need to watch to see who wins. Even with bad ratings, I bet the X-Factor will be back again.

You’re right MCL, We’ll see how American Idol fares against The Voice. I wonder who the mentors will be?

  13. WetPaint says: Both Christina and Cee Lo have announced that they’re taking a leave of absence from the hit show to work on their own side projects. Christina will be promoting her new album, Lotus, and Cee Lo will be working on a new sitcom for NBC.

Replacing them in the spring will be Colombian singer Shakira and R&B artist Usher.

  14. KariAnn – The X Factor has been renewed. Simon announced it in October. He needs to address the many problems with this show or the ratings will deescalate even further.

Carly Rose is a Broadway Baby and has had major roles on Broadway. :). This is why she is so mature and poised for her age.

Brittany seems so ill at ease. Yes, I did notice her distance when her singers were eliminated but I chalked it up to indifference. It’s still worrisome – you would think she would have more compassion for these kids.

    This show is a mess!

  15. I was so sad to see Beatrice go home…song choice really jurt her, she has that soulful raspy voice and Brittany didn’t choose songs that fit her voice!

    Tate for the win…!!!

    Gene,

Are you still watching Dancing…so glad to see my boy Tony in the finale, I hope he and Melissa win the mirrored ball……..

  16. The X-Factor is as bad as it has always been for me. That’s why I record it and FF through most of it. I watch all of these shows to meet new artist. Sometimes the ones I like do well in the competition and sometimes they don’t.

There are only three contestants this year as far as I can see and the others are “performing on expectation,” which is boring, or off key, or just not very well. The voters have done a good job of keeping the top three at the top of the leader board. The only one that has been on the “bus stop” who performed above expectation and redeemed herself a little bit was Diamond White, and yes, the choir at the end was a bit much. That may be all she had, I don’t know.

Carly’s performance was very special to me and I agree with MCL about the arrangement, I wouldn’t want it on my iPod. It probably came from a stage performance she did in the past. LA mentioned the big glory notes at the end, but for me it was the subtle nuance of the quieter passages that really sold it for me it was a visual thing as well. She just stood there, no weird costumes, no currently hip hand gestures and she never moved her feet an inch. Her phrasing and facial expressions and the little adlibs she incorporated into her performance sold it for me. I think she is making a mistake trying to break into the pop music field where she can perform songs as forgettable as Cher Lloyd did on results night. Interestingly, none of the four that I liked, Carly, Tate, Vino and Diamond, shed a single tear this week.

    Vonnie,
Yes. These are the same three couples that I would have picked. I like Shawn for the win but Melisa has been great this season. There is a reason for each couple to win. Kelly was the first winner, Derek has won the most mirror balls and Shawn is just so darn cute and likeable as well as a hard worker and competitor. Melisa has all of those qualities but is the only one not to have won. Anyone could be the Cinderella story.

  17. Gene –
Almost every word you spoke in that last post about X-Factor are almost my thoughts exactly. It’d be really cool if they’d just vote 4 of them off as far as I’m concerned. I don”t think any of them are horrible singers in my opinion. …just not that fantastic. Emblem 3 is an interesting group to me. To me they fit the stats of most new and upcoming boy groups. I wouldn’t buy their records but I believe a lot of young girls will. The truth is as great as Tate and Carly and Vino are, I probably wouldn’t buy a cd of any of them either and I think all 3 of them are exceptional. The voice I enjoyed the most was Jason Brock. Hated his performances but loved his voice. I would buy his records. Get him a good producer and I think he’d do well. I like LA but he seemed like he did nothing at all for Jason.

I really think this is it for me and X-Factor. It just seems like its an way too loud overproduced amateur show. I’m like you.. I guess I just listen hoping that I’m going to hear some extraordinary vocal that doesn’t sound like some famous singer we already know. None of these shows have done that for me. I’m usually pretty up beat about them all …but I think after this season I;m pretty much done.

  18. Hi Karl,
I’m down with a four person elimination next week, but I also agree that none of these singers are terrible. Several need a lot of development. They just aren’t ready for this level of exposure. I wish you could get interested in The Voice this year. They have a group at this point that you would hate for any of them to go home.

If I were in your shoes, having seen Jason perform on the show would be what I got out of the season. You can follow him on you tube and may find something from him at CD Baby or even iTunes. In this day of self production and distribution with the internet we don’t have to depend on the record companies like we used to. I follow several folks that these shows have introduced me to; in fact, I’m going to a Christmas / holidays concert in a barn outside of Nashville this weekend to see a duo that I first saw on a singing competition program.

I just hope that they make the new arrangement at American Idol work out and we have a great season and they solidify their rightful position as the leader of this genre of programming. If X-Factor were canceled next week, I wouldn’t care but if it continues I will probably watch it in the same way I do now.
