Vocal Masterclass Discussion For Season 3 Of The Voice: The Battle Rounds Week Three

20121015-192252.jpg
I don’t know about you but these Battle Rounds on The Voice are starting to get old.

The show airs Monday and Tuesday at 8:00 P.M., as singers from the same Team face off against each other.

Although the talent is outstanding and the Judges’ Steal is a neat concept, recollection of some of these singers’ faces and voices are starting to blur.

I am assuming that this is indeed the last week for the Battle Rounds. And for the life of me, I can’t remember what happens after this.

At least American Idol keeps things simple. Simple is good. Simple is memorable. Simple I can deal with and, at the end of the day, simple assists the viewers in forming an instantaneous bond with the singers. Something that neither The Voice or The X Factor have quite figured out.

I absolutely adore Carson Daly and all of the Judges on this show but there needs to be more thought given to what works for the viewers.

Perhaps this is why American Idol has enjoyed immeasurable success in producing stars. Since the singers have more airtime on the show, the fan-base for each singer is elevated each week.

I hope many of you tune in and share your comments after the show. Or before! I’m not fussy!

  1. I’ve been enjoying “The Voice” much more than the “X-Factor”, so I really have no complaints. I’m curious to see if one of the contestants “stolen” will end up in the Finals. I am also wondering what the dynamics will be like when CeeLo and Christina leave next season.

I still have to get used to their names, but it was exciting when Marissa (age 15) competed against another young lady. I have to watch yesterday’s show today. I watched the Presidential Debate.

  2. MCL,
I think that expanding from eight member teams to sixteen may have been a bridge too far and is responsible for the problems you mentioned. I’m ok with the number of complete battles we have seen, but there are so many this year, several have been abbreviated and only shown in the recaps. Looking at the teams as they stand now it appears that there are maybe two contestants on each team that have a chance and most of the rest are capable of keeping us entertained in whatever the next round is. I can’t remember either.

They are clearly failing and making the contestants as memorable as Idol has always done. Two simple steps would be to put their name under them on the screen more often and to call them by name more often. Some of Idol’s success comes from things that they do that seem obnoxious at the time like, “here’s Siobhan Magnus the glass blower from…” but it’s effective I guess. I’m ready for the next round.

    Kariann,
The girl’s did give us a great battle round and Marisa was remarkably good for her age. I thought that I liked Devyn during practice but the kid really came through on stage. I would have chosen her. I also liked Nichol and Brandon. He showed a lot of enthusiasm but not a great deal of control. You could see Nichol’s professionalism and experience when the two sang together as she controlled her pace to match his. I liked them both in the blind auditions, and although Brandon was very entertaining, Nichol was the right choice to advance.
I cheated on the names. I tried real hard to remember Nichol’s name but couldn’t do it so I went to The Voice website and experienced total recall.

  3. Gene…did you watch Nashville last night? I know who that young girl sounds like now…the one who sings with the young man…she sounds like Alison Kraus!!! I love her voice!!!

  4. Hey now! Not many people sound like Allison. I liked the song the young starlet and the older guy’s song they were writing in the pick up truck last week. No i forgot to tune in. We’ve been doing some work on the house and I was distracted. I lost track of what day it was TV wise anyway.

  5. Lol…this is the other girl, not the young starlet…maybe you haven’t heard her sing yet, she is the one I was saying sang @ the bluebird with the young guy…hmmm! She is the one the older producer wants to make a demo of…

Sorry MCL…I know this isn’t conversation about the voice! But this tv drama has some great vocalists!!!

  6. Vonnie,
I knew which one you were talking about but I don’t think I have heard her sing yet. I just threw that in about the other girl. The pick up truck song wasn’t what you would expect from her and I thought it was pretty good. I wonder if On Demand has Nashville?

  7. I dunno…they sang that song together last night, in a recording session…it was really good!

The young ladies name is Clare Bowen, she plays the part of Scarlett O’conner, Deacon’s niece!!! Maybe there is some youtube songs out there of her singing, she is a singer/ actress from Austrailia!!!

  8. Were they singing “If I didn’t Know Better?” There is a You Tube video of them singing that, probably the club scene that you saw in the first episode. That song is by a duo that’s been around for two or three years now called “Civil Wars.” Interestingly, Allison has a song Tittled “If I didn’t Know Any Better,” but it’s a different song. This young couple was good, as is the original version but she didn’t sound like Allison to me, on that song anyway.

  9. Who does she sound like…I have been racking my poor depleted brain!!! But yeah! That’s the song!!!

  10. Vonnie,
They do offer Nashville from the “On Demand” menu on my cable system but there is a delay of a week or so before ne shows are added. I was able to go back and watch the first episode and see what you spoke of earlier. I’m enjoying this show on three levels; the music with a little bit of an industry insider view, the sightseeing around Nashville with all of its familiar sights and the drama.

The part of music producer Waddy White that wants to record the young couple is being played by a pretty significant figure in the music industry, JD Souther. He has written for and performed with Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Roy Orbison and many others, including himself. The radio station he is working at is the world famous WSM that has aired every show ever performed on the Opry stage, in fact the Grand Ole Opry is actually a Live WSM radio show. I also notice country music legend Del McCoury in a bit part backstage at the Opry.

I got to see the young couple debut their song at the Bluebird, and the older coupler do their song. Both were really good but I think the young couples cover of the Civil Wars song is the best performance so far on the show.

  11. Gene…

So glad you got to see it…yes! I so agree the younger couples song was really good. Thank you for the info on the producer, I didn’t know that…wow! That is pretty impressive that they brought him on board. I really think that the group as a whole for this show is trying to bring more to the table than a mindless tv drama…I love this show and hope that it sticks around for a while.

I like the guys voice who plays Deacon, I think in that first episode there is a solo of him!

I like the cast of this show…the lady who plays Rayna, was on Friday night Lights, I never watched that show, we couldn’t get the channel for the first season or so that it came on, and when we finally did get the channel, I was to out of the loop and then it went off, but her co-star on that show Kyle Chandler is my favorite actor of all time, I really wish they would give him a spot on this show…don’t know if he can sing or not but he is an outstanding actor.

The long haired boy that is playing Scarletts boyfriend, was on a soap that I used to watch, he played Lucky Spencer, he is a great actor too…the guy who plays Rayna’s husband, where do I know him from, I have seen him but can’t put him where!!!

Next week may be iffy for me getting to watch as “Sandy” makes her way up the coast…looks like I am in paths way of rain, wind, and snow…a hurricane with a nor easter! 😦

  12. Vonnie,
This would be a good time to drive to Nashville for a visit!
Be safe in the storm. I will pray for you and your family, as well as our other east coast posters, during this time of danger.

  13. Thank you Gene…we are battening down the hatches!!! Looks like a wild ride is coming our way, wind, rain, snow, for up to 30 some hours!!!!!!!

I too am praying for all who are in the path of this storm…as well as the rescue workers who will without a second thought risk their lives to answer any and all distress calls!!!!

A trip to Nashville would be awesome right now; would you happen to know of any hotels that accepts, dogs, cats and horses???? 😉

Since our move we have not built a new barn yet, this will be the first time ever my horses will be somewhat exposed to the elements, we have an open run in for them, but doesn’t offer any protection from driving wind, rain and snow!!!

  14. Vonnie,
You had me at horses. I think there are a few motels that we have stayed at that take the smaller animals.
Is your old place near enough that you might be able to board your horse there?
Actually I think I do know where you could board your horse about 40 miles South of Nashville.

  15. Lol Gene…we are bunkered down!

We have had such crazy weather over the last year…snow last year for Halloween, looks like a repeat this year, that Derrecho thing in June (now that was a ride, scarriest thing I have ever gone through) and now this…hopefully this will be a piece of cake for the horses after that storm…plus it is already snowing in southern VA………

Thank you for your prayers…sure do appreciate them!!! 🙂
