I am a little late to the party. I meant to add this blog topic yesterday.
However, this is when the “better late than never” slogan comes in handy and kicks in!
So, after much drama and talks and theories galore, it appears that American Idol finally organized their new judging panel comprised of Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and returning judge, Randy Jackson, at the 11th hour.
In fact, the celebrity auditions began in New York prior to an official announcement from American Idol or Fox. Strange. So strange.
Hard to say how this will play out but that’s a ton of star power at the judges’ table. Will it hinder our focus on the competitive singers?
I think this may be the reason why The Voice contestants don’t fare as well after the competition ends – they are tethered to their celebrity judges and, once the show is over, they are totally on their own for the most part. They have to achieve their own identity.
Hopefully, American Idol will enforce a barrier rule, making sure that the singers – and not the judges – remain foremost in our minds. This is always how American Idol has operated and why we love it so.
So, what say y’all? Do you love this new line-up of judges?
I wonder how much these four are costing. If I only had certain powers:)

I for one am disgusted with these judges. So many better ones were considered. Enrique, Adam, etc. I can’t stomach Miriah. Nikki is just plan weird and mumbles when she speak, Randy is useless and has been for years.
Idol is done-jumped shark and onto XFactor me.

It’s funny that I answer your questions on another thread. I don’t care what happens on The Voice, X-Factor, or America’s Go Talent. It doesn’t matter who they hire. However, I really don’t want the Judges to be so over-powering as to become the main focus of the show. There are two Divas here who might be competiting for attention. If all the judges do a good job, I will be plesed. We already know what we will get with Randy. The clique phrases and more “Dude” or “Dawg.” He has the musical knowledge to do so much better.
I think Mariah will work out and I have great hopes for Keith. I am not impressed with Nicki. Why have 4 judges, but that’s their plan. They have already had the judges begin auditions. So, this is it. I would have loved Enrique. Now, if Randy promises to do better – that will help. Does Nicki even know how to sing?

I’m not a big Mariah fan, but I do think she has the credentials to be a good judge. I’m not really familiar with Keith Urban or Nicki Minaj, so I just don’t know. Not thrilled that Randy is coming back either. And WHY 4 judges??? You would have thought AI had learned from that mistake.

My interest has been waning since 2009 when Adam Lambert “broke” Idol for me. Now… I’m done.

I’m interested to see how NM does. She may just prove to be a side show attraction and comic relief, but I thought that was Randy’s job….LOL I think Randy should have taken on the mentoring role so we could see how musically talented he truly is and then if he proves to have a real musical ear and eye for creating an onstage performance he could possibly come back as judge and garner more respect in his observations.
I think the other two judges will do just fine. Mariah and Keith are awesome choices if you ask me.

I’m with Shannon on this one. I’ve been a loyal Idol fan since Season 2, however S7 & S8 with David Cook & Adam respectively, were the best for me (for you…lol). But yes, Adam broke Idol for me as well. Never voted since. Our family has been just hanging on watching the last few seasons, but this panel does it for us. Won’t be tuning in, we’re done. I think these talent competition shows have run their course, over-saturated the market, and Idol has long since left their successful formula behind that once made it a great show. Now it’s more about judges and their personalities and promoting or resurrecting their careers than the contestants.Sad, but Idol had a good run…

Nicki Minaj looks like an over-produced drag queen. She can’t sing, and I find it hilarious that she’s going to be coaching, and, rating talent on Idol. Mariah, I get it – she hasn’t really had a huge hit since 1997, but she still has a name the industry respects, so it makes sense that she’d become a coach/mentor. Randy, they should of just let him go. Enough already. Keith, probably the most relevant and current artist (I don’t use the term ‘artist’ in describing Nicki) on the panel, and, unlike JLO, I don’t see him using Idol, stealthily, to revive his faded music career.
My perfect panel would consist of 4, with; Shania Twain, Mariah Carey, Nick Lachey/Josh Groban/Justin Timberlake, and Enrique Iglesias/Pink.
Simon should get Nick to host The X Factor.
Maybe Shania will make it onto The X Factor-Canada, when/if it takes off. Simon loves her, you never know.
