Masterclass Discussion For America’s Got Talent Season Seven: The Austin Auditions

I am still very much “under the weather” here. This is one nasty virus in my system. Oh well, the show must go on….

And, so it does. America’s Got Talent is set to air another couple of episodes this week on NBC – Monday, June 4th at 8:00 P.M. And Tuesday, June 5th at 9:00 P.M.

This show better pick up some speed soon. The talent is pretty lackluster this season and is not creating any buzz or “water-cooler” discussion as in previous seasons.

Now that we have become accustomed to Howard Stern in the judge’s chair, we need to see something spectacular and soon.

Do you have any favorites yet? Please share! I’m hanging in the comments section.

  1. Rosanne, so sorry you still are ill. I had a sinus infection for 3 weeks and then got a total respiratory infection after that. I knew my immune system was compromised! Check out info on Probiotics – PB8. It seems to be helping me. Praying for an improvement in your health!

I am not impressed with the talent we have seen thus far on AGT. There have been a few cute acts but nothing outstanding. They will lose viewership if this continues. I think Howard Stern is working out quite well as I never thought Piers Morgan was totally into it (judging). In that respect, the show has improved.

Maybe they are saving the best for last?

  2. Oh my KariAnn. That sounds horrible. I hope you are better now. I think that, unfortunately, as we get older, we have to really know and respect our diminished energy levels. Hard to do, isn’t it? Just when I think I have this mastered to perfection, I am faced with yet another virus. I am getting better but not ready to do cart wheels yet. Haha. Far from it.

AGT is a bust – a total bust. What are they thinking this year? The talent is just not good. I swear, Piers Morgan took all the talent with him when he exited the show. So disappointing. Let’s see what tonight brings.

  3. I hope they aren’t showing us all the talent. What did you all think about the girl who sang with her father? Was that this season? I think she is probably the most talented I have seen so far. Maybe she’ll do some solo performances in Vegas. I think she has real potential. Don’t remember the name though.

Lemme look it up: Maurice and Shanice Hayes.

What do you all think about those two?

  4. Oh yes, I remember. Well, it wasn’t earth-shattering but she was very good. Just not getting any magic or excitement from these performers this year. No stand-outs!

  6. Taymaro – I am just recuperating from the flu and when I read that, I laughed and laughed. Made me instantly feel better. This show is ridiculous. They had us believe that he was on his death bed or something. Whatever! I still don’t see the purpose to all this game-playing. The truth always comes out in the end.

  8. Hey All.

I guess with MCL not feeling well and Idol going off , things have been slow around here. My prayers are with you both up there. You’ve got to get better so we can keep this fire going here at my favorite site. (smile).

    RE: AGT
I’ve been keeping up with it and all the things that are going and I am up to my old tricks again making my early early predictions on my blog … and Taymaro …I see some pretty phenomenal talents on this year. There are no singers knocking me down but some great talents who I already can see in the top unless some personality or back ground issues comes up.

And speaking of talents with background issues … I’m sure you’ve all heard by now the problems with one of the talents that was on AGT named Tim Poe …. and yes once gain here we have another WGWG. But there were some problems. When he came on he gave a story about being hit with a grenade while he was in the service, which according to him caused a speech impediment. Well …according to a ton of online sources , he lied about several things , some which he fessed up to already. Of course he wasn’t a favorite of mines (because I don’t do country) but the audience and the judges fell in love with him …. not JUST because he was the kind of artist these talent show audiences love … but because of his war story …which apparently was not all true. I don’t think the show has determined yet if they will let him return …but its not looking too good.

There have been a few acts that I’ve seen on AGT that have been pretty amazing to me that I already predict as going pretty far up there if there are no problems. David Garabaldy and the CMKY’s , an act that painted an excellent portrait of Bach through paint splattering. Spencer Horeman, the escape artist was pretty awesome and Alonzo Jones an extreme dance contortionist, he was good too. I see a few others getting up there but I just want it to be on record that I said those 3 pretty early off 🙂 … unless some personal things come to the surface, or there is some “mess up” in their act. And then I’m sure there are a ton of great talents we have yet to see a full act of which will probably be there with them.

Also …listen… I have a question. There was a 18 year old on AGT named Ron Christopher Porter. His goal was to do movie trailer voice overs. He was pretty good but the judges thought it couldn”t make for a whole show, and I agree. BUT ….this guy was incredibly funny and I thought her would make an out- of- sight stand-up comic because he had us rolling. Ive looked at it over and over again. I think he missed his calling. What I wanted to know was …. is there anyway the show could be petitioned to have him come back and try out as a comedy act? If they did …I think he’d go a long ways in the competition and even if he didn’t win I think he’d be signed for a TV show before the competition was over ( if he”s not already) . He reminded me of a male Sha-nae-nae. Does anybody have any idea how something like that could get started. Everybody all over the internet is raving about him …and I think they should let him comeback with another act. If there is some petition I want to help.

  9. Hey BrotherKarl. I am slowly mending. It’s been a bit of a rough go here to say the least and I have to wait it out. Should be back to normal next week – at least that’s the plan. Ha!

I was not impressed with the stutterer. I found the whole story suspicious from the get-go and he did not have a great voice at all. I have known people who stutter who possess amazing singing voices so this was a mis-guided attempt by the AGT Producers to build something out of nothing – and a fable at that.

It has been quiet around the MCL hang-out, hasn’t it? Will have to add more blog topics to stimulate conversation around here. Stay tuned…. In the meantime, thank you for stopping by and adding your comments. Always appreciated.

  10. Oh, about Ron Christopher – I totally forgot about him. I was sick at the time and not paying much attention. He was good, though. Glad to see he is getting positive feedback and support. Maybe the producers will bring him back as a wild card.

  11. They were spreading the false rumor that Phil didn’t need surgery to gain some privacy and avoid a swarm of paparazzi.

Phil’s surgery took 6 hours and was successful and everything went as planned. Doctors say he will be healed and ready for the tour next month.

Those must have been boulders instead of stones for it to take 6 hours! 😀

I still don’t think he deserved to win because of a common health issue that so many of us have endured. Jessica was still the rightful “American Idol” IMO. But that’s water under the bridge and I still congratulate Phil. Jessica will do just fine with her amazing voice.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Phil and I am looking forward to seeing him perform live in Charleston SC on August 6th.

I’m mostly going to see Hollie, DeAndre, Elise and Skylar but I am excited to see them all!

  12. MCl …. Glad to hear you’re doing at least a little better.

RE: Tim Poe: I’m like you about him, I wasn’t that impressed and I did have some doubts when I was hearing the story. It would seem to me however that if the show would do a little more digging before they would air as much as they did about him …because they had a nice little about 4-5 minute pre-recorded clip going prior to his performance.

I wanted to ask you about one of the performers on AGT, Andrew DeLeon (the gothic guy who did that classical piece who sang in, what sounded like a false soprano). Would you say he has potential to be a real classical singer? Do you think all he needs is a little coaching OR would you say he really needs to take some classes. Everybody was flipping over him …and I was just wondering if maybe they were seeing something that I was maybe missing. You know I had that same problem with Hollie, and it took me a little while to see it., and I finally did. Whats your professional opinion on his performance.

  13. I agree the talent has been subpar this season with few exceptions. Hope the youtube show later this summer is interesting. I sent in a video, probably won’t happen they seem to be frowning on singers this year. I did get an audition for The Voice on July 7 though, hope it goes well! My Blog – Shari Bales Music – has details of what I will be singing and more info on The Voice. sharibales.wordpress.com Hope you are feeling better! Hope to hear from you soon, we will send you the new demo as soon as it is mastered. Thanks and get well!!!

  14. Hey Shari! Nice to see you here. Cannot wait to see your audition material. You are fantastic so I know you will do exceptionally well.

Yes, I agree, AGT is after non-singing talent this year. Well ho-hum to them. They better start finding some spectacular acts or the show is destined for poor ratings. Loved the mentalist, though. He was exceptional.

  15. Hey Everybody!

I asked this a question here about a week ago of MCL, but I guess she’s been kind of busy lately keeping the site active, which is understandable ( I love this site). Is there anybody else thats a musical instructor that comes here? Or … not even necessarily a music instructor. Maybe just someone who’s into or knows a little bit about classical music?

My question was about Andrew De Leon, the guy you sang the classical number in soprano on Americas’ Got Talent who had never sung before an audience before. Based on what you know about that industry …. would you say this guy is good and really has the potential to make it as a classical artist. I’m usually pretty good about this stuff but ocassionally I don;t get it 🙂 …as with Hollie on Idol . The judges and the audience were all going crazy over his performance … but as with Hollie, I just didn’t see it until late in the competition. I wanted to get somebody else’s opinion on his performance.

Its been longer than week now since the performance so I’m sure everybody’s forgotten by now ( i guess thats should answer my question) … Any way I’ll post this YOU TUBE clip of it just to refresh everybody’s memory. I didn’t get it … but I was hoping somebody here could give me their opinion.

    Here’s Andrew De Leon clip:

  16. Hey BrotherKarl:

Sorry for not responding sooner. I must have missed this comment. Anyway, I don’t get it either. He was awful beyond words. And, as if his parents never heard him before? Give. Me. A. Break! They were there along with other family members cheering him on.

They are trying to make us believe that there is more there than there actually is. Talk about building a mountain out of a molehill.

A true and gifted counter-tenor sounds like this:

  17. Thanks for the clip MCL

I get it … and there is definitely a HUGE difference between the singing Daniel Taylor does on this clip and Andrew De Leon on America’s Got Talent clip. You said Andrew was “awful beyond words” 🙂 Wooo!! that got me. I’m not saying he can’t sing at all … its just that to me … it just seems that it would need to have a whole lot of fine tuning yet to be considered “concert ready”. (Its actually because of you that I’ve changed the way I speak of new amateurs who appear on TV).

I’m not big fan of classical, but I do enjoy some classical singers. I really enjoy Jackie Evanco and for all that its worth I also enjoyed Prince Poppycock who appeared on AGT a couple of years ago. His act was a little bot more then just singing though and I think thats why I enjoyed it). Even went to hear him live.

I never heard another adult male sing classical music in that range other than Andrew De Leon and now Daniel Taylor. Very interesting!! And you call it a “counter tenor”. So its not so “unheard of”. Wow!!! Not only do I now know there are men who sing classical that way, but now thanks to you I’ve heard someone who sings that way that is good!!

MCL … I’ve learned quite a bit from you and the other members on this site since I’ve been coming here. Thank you so much and continue the good work. (I’ll be passing the name of Daniel Taylor around)

  18. BrotherKarl – I am so sorry. I was beyond harsh when describing Andrew. His act just bothered me because it seemed gimmicky.

I know Daniel very well – he used to assist me with my choir – as an extra chorus singer and as a soloist. Now he is an international star and our paths never cross except via Facebook. Haha

But he was a huge musical presence in my life – so gifted and so intelligent. He has worked with the greatest conductors and classical artists around the world and he, as well, teaches and conducts.

Thank you for taking such an immediate interest in him. It shows how passionate you are about your music as well. I am glad that this site has served you well. It does for me also – meeting new people like you who embrace excellence in music makes the work in maintaining this site all worth while.

Again – my apologies re Andrew. Let’s see where he goes from here.

  19. Hey MCL- No need to apologize. I just thought it was kind of funny because it reminded of the comments I would have made myself had I not considered that post you did a while back. As far as gimmicky … I really hope that’s not what it was, because if its found out it, could really hurt a persons reputation ultimately. Talk to you soon.
