This past week, the City of Timmins has been declared as a State Of Emergency due to intensive forest fires in multiple and surrounding areas of our community.
The above video is indicative of what our firefighters and emergency personnel have had to contend with. It was taken by a “person unknown” and gives one a stunning and frightening example of how quickly these fires can spread.
This particular fire happened within 5 minutes from my home and has since been extinguished.
However, the fire continues to rage in other parts of the City, more removed from city habitation but closer to cottage and camping sites.
Additionally, other Northern Ontario towns, such as Kirkland Lake, have had to undergo extreme evacuation procedures because of the fire’s proximity to the town’s main core.
However, fatality is resting at zero as of this writing, all due to the stellar and brave efforts of local, national and USA emergency crew. They still have a great deal of work ahead of them, but with cooler weather, low winds and promise of rain, there is a glimmer of hope that this will end soon.
However, it is safe to say that the ground will be burning for the remainder of the summer and that residents will have to be wary of this fact.
For updates, questions, pertinent links and resources, visit the City Of Timmins website.
For those living in others areas, please keep the Northern Ontario community in your thoughts and prayers.
Be safe MCL and I hope and pray it rains soon.

MCL – Just watched the video and realized it was a week ago! I never heard about it on the radio or in the newspaer! How are things now?

Awestruck – things are much better. A family member works for the OPP and the Kirkland Lake area is pretty secure now.
In Timmins, the weather has turned unseasonably cool now and everyone is thrilled. This will, hopefully, aid the emergency staff in their quest to squelch those stubborn flames once and for all.
Don’t know now much of the video you watched, but around the 6:30 mark, those flames jump the highway. Incredible to see.
And, I had no idea your father was from Timmins. What a small world!

Small world indeed MCL, my uncle still lives there. I watched the entire video and have never seen anything like it. 9 plus minutes and to see the fire move like that and jump the highway, scary. Nature in control.

Scary. I’m glad that particular fire is out now. But there are several large wildfires raging in the United States right now & conditions are very very dry in the Midwest.
