Big night tonight on American Idol! The Top 3 singers of Season 11 will be unveiled.

Top 3 is a prestigious honor as each of the final three singers get to experience a multi-media homecoming in the company of eagerly awaiting fans from their community.

It is quite the emotional event and one that all the singers at this stage of the game feel within reach.

And, if you can’t wait that long, head on over to Amazon right now and download it, tout suite!

Of course, it also available via ITunes.

So, are your ready for tonight? Who do you think is in danger of elimination? Or do you anticipate a shocker? And, by the way, did I tell you that David Cook is on the show tonight? Tee Hee!

  1. All polls seem to indicate Joshua is a shocking boot. I think Hollie’s fans rallied and saved her. As for Cook, I really think he has been dropped from RCA. Love his voice but his second 2nd was just a melodyless mess. This song is really good. Bought it all ready. Maybe David can end up on Wind-Up with James?

  7. I am very disappointed Hollie left tonight – best girl voice on AI in years…. she will be missed. There is something so sincere about Hollie… no screeching, no OTT staging… just a lovely girl with a beautiful voice… the worst part of this show is the Judges manipulations… now we will probably have two R and B gospelly screeching singers in the finals… ugh Please go all the way Phillip!

  11. Hollie was a class act and really improved throughout the season but I’m extremely glad there was no surprise with Josh going home. Heart and soul? His performances exude it and I cannot get enough of his raw yet tender voice. Vocally he’s a fabulous throwback to the great soul singers of the 60s and 70s. While we’ve been blessed with great new female r’n’b/soul singers over the last decade: Fantasia, Leela James, Chrisette Michele; there haven’t been any males coming through. While there’s no way he’ll win, that’s probably a good thing as there won’t be the entirely unreasonable expectation that he has to sell truckloads. He won’t. But I just hope they give him the right material. I’ll be lining up to buy his music.

  12. I’m always sad when I learn that one of the favorites of this show is done for the season.
I was sad about DeAndre, Colten, Elise, Skylar and today Hollie. What an intersteing dynamic she added to the show.

Hollie in my opinion is the most improved of all the singers that were showcased in this competition. Over and over again her performances surprised me. I never imagined from the first time that I saw her that she would make it as far she did. And the last 3 weeks she reached heights that made me doubt my own theories, thinking she could possibly even win. She was for me, always the awesome performer on the dark horse. She added a dynamic to the show that I will always include for now on in my personal observation of how “Idol” plays out. The person who will apply themselves the most to the competition.

Other than that everything is playing out as it typically normally does in Idol at this time of the show. The shock factors were over a couple weeks back.. The top 3 last week were the final 3 this week . The two people who I personally believe are the most talented are still in sitting right along side the person who I predicted to be the winner.

Who I would like to personally see win is Jessica, as she seems to me to be the person who could be the most successful in crossing different markets Joshua, as much as I like him, will only play to a limited segment of the market. I don’t think Idol will crown another Gospel R&B’r anytime soon. Who do I think will win then ? As I predicted a while back now ….Phil Phillips (not my favorite but a favorite of a huge Idol fan base).

She came out week after week fighting, and at least she made her way into the Top 4, and that’s awesome considering her AI Journey started in Season 10. Hollie has such a sweet disposition and positive attitude.

I am saddened that my favorite is out…but I completely understand while her vocals weren’t wow over the top …they were good …but this is a contest and showy sure does drive the voting up….also who is advising this girl…when she did 2 ballads that was her ticket off the show…she did so well last week and showed so much star power doing Mountain High…..the other 3 all did a ballad/slow song and and upbeat one…which is pretty much a no-brainer for this show…who let her or convinced her to do 2 ballads….I can’t stress strongly enough how strangely I feel that choice was…if I was one to embrace conspiracy theories …I would say some behind the scene manipulation was going on….they had to know this was a bad move.

  17. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if there was backstage manipulation in song choice too. But since we’ll never know that for a fact, I’m just also going to say that I agree with the many comments here about how classy Hollie is. I’ve always loved her personality, and the fact that week after week she fought back without ever looking angry at the judges’ comments is a testament to what a sweetheart she is. I think she’s one of the most likeable contestants I can think about on Idol (besides David Archaletta!!!).

    Like

  18. Louise – absolutely. She was a gem and very similar in nature to David Archuleta. And, you can bet there was manipulation. She would never have sung two ballads if the choice was hers. I think all the discomfort on her face was in her knowledge that these song choices were not good ones. Had nothing to do with her ability to perform. Rather, it had to do with sabotage of the highest order.

  21. When a judge’s favorite changes the song, they call it making it you own. When a non-favorite changes a song, they call it misinterpreting & not connecting. Many times, Hollie out sang in the duets, but the judges conveniently failed to emphasize those times. In this age of hyper presentation in pop music, I don’t think the judges gave Hollie enough credit for her exceptional strength: her voice.

  22. Rosanne-I remember Hollie saying she didn’t understand what the lyrics to Faithfully were about, and so she got some guidance on the meaning of the song. That tells me right there, it wasn’t her idea to sing that song! Ughhh!!

  23. Yes, Anita, my thoughts exactly. And it is testament to her that she tried to internalize the right emotion so that her performance would be more believable. They saddled her with horrible song choices. Disgusting.

  24. Rosanne-I really wish Hollie would have stood her ground with Jimmy, but I guess the man can be rather intimidating. I remember Casey doing just that when he wanted to sing Nature Boy, and Jimmy was trying to talk him into something else. Casey did a wonderful job that night.

  25. Anita – I think Hollie herself had had enough. She looked almost relieved to be away from this pressure cooker of a show. And, maybe, she had no choice. The producers clear what they want and that’s that. Her hands are tied. Poor thing.

  26. I read somewhere on line where Hollie said she felt like she was punched in the face by Jimmy last night when he made the negative comments about her. I also saw her interviewed about the other contestants and she was extremely complimentary about all of them. She is a very generous girl!!!

  27. You guys !! You probably are all going to hope I go away after this is post and never come back …but seriously?

All of this talk makes it sound as if you would have ‘liked” somebody else to go home. May be Phillip … who is somebody else’s very favorite…or maybe Joshua who I personally think is the best. Or Jessica who the judges loved and saved. !! It’s almost as if its insane or wrong for somebody to have a different opinion.

I think all of these kids in the top 10 were the very cream of the crop. The best season with the best talent ever ever, as far as I;m concerned, and some of my favorites went home real early. But I don’t think it’s because “the show” didn’t want them there …I just think we all have different things we like and just like a lot of you guys don;t like Joshua’s “screaming” as so many of you say …. well why can’t it be that …Hollie just wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea.

Joshua is my very favorite. In my personal opinion, he is the most talented that has sang on that stage. But will he win …I;m almost sure he won’t. Not because the show is rigged. He won;t win because there are a lot of people out there just like you, who don’t care that much for that style of singing. I could go a whole lot of places as to why it “could be” that Joshua won’t win …..A WHOLE LOT OF PLACES . I won;t go there because I don’t believe Idol is rigged and only wants a specific kind of singer to win. The real truth is … everybody just does not get into Joshua’s style of music (some of you here are proff) . Why can’t that just be true for Hollies as well.

Do you really think that its because the judges don’t like her? That they worked specifically to sabotage Hollie’s performance? As good as she has been? Really? The audience didn’t pick Hollie ….the judges did. They saw in her the potential to win, and she came very very close, thats why they picked her. She made to the top 4 because she is good . That proves she is good. There were 10 very awesome performers this season. All awesome!! But they all couldn’t win and each week somebody had to go home. Not because the show is rigged …but because there can only be one.

I am not glad to see Hollie go at all …but I know some of you will be glad to see some of the others go. Not me. I am excited for all of them even though only one will win and it probably won’t be who I like. There are 3 great talents left and I believe each of them are there because its who the majority of Idol fans want even though it may not be who I personally want.

  30. What’s interesting for Hollie is that even during weeks in which she was generally considered to have had the best performances, she ended up in the bottom 3. She had a number of very strong performances…in my opinion, the most memorable of the season. If you look at the performances that were rated the most highly by WNTS, she was singing songs by Christina, Celine, Whitney, Adele, Tina and Leona. That speaks volumes as to her potential and versatility. Hopefully she’ll be managed by someone that can help her realize that potential.

  31. No one should leave and we all have varied takes on Idol. As someone above mentioned and as someone “inside” told me the manipulation starts from the jump with who is shown during auditions and Hollywood. Deandre mentions this in his Slezak interview. If not shown very little chance of building an early fanbase. Then it is performance spot. If you are consistently first or second you are not favored and these slots historically get lower votes. Last to performer more on the mind. Then there is song switcharoo. Lastly some idols get multiple help sessions with mentors and others 10 minutes. IMO Hollie did fantastic going until 4 when she had to endure all the tricks of the trade of Idol. Great article on Idol Forums about real vote totals etc.

It is natural to be happy when your fav makes it to the next week and you want to believe they received the votes and that is why. This week however it did appear from every number crunching place that Joshua was lowest vote getter. Idol also has this nice little “clause” which states they can throw out multiple votes. Thing is they do this only when they want to clause a contestant whom they want gone. They do not do this across the board.

For years I have believe these things truly happen. I am a founding member on the Grassyknoll. Not everyone needs to take up residence.

brotherkarl, I am glad you enjoy Joshua and I wish him well. I just do not enjoy his singing at all. To my ears he grates. That is the beautiful thing about music one style does not fit all.

But in fairness sake I would love Idol to have 1 season where they gave every contestant the same amount of facetime before the voting rounds. I would like every contestant to be able to pick their songs and receive the same amount of coaching. Songs not switched etc. I would like performance spots to be random and if you were last one week you would be first the next. For all the kids to be treated equally and fairly.

I believe if the above was to happen, we truly would have an Idol crowned that was America’s Favorite.

Sometime the shananigans do not work. They tried their darnest to de-rail Scotty last season putting him first etc. But America had already fallen for the kid during the Hollywood rounds. Thus this year some who were not favored received no face time.

It all works out usually. Those who have it get signed and make records. Some hit it big like Daughtry and eclispe those who won. Other like Jason Castro make a decent living and are happy.

I wish all of the contestant success as signing is their passion. Personally, I just wish it was fair. That is all

To me, his voice sounded so different than most songs he’s sung. Phillips vocals were quite lovely! I was very impressed! HUGS VONNIE!!!

  33. RickyLee song choice and bad advice are common ways Idol manipulates the outcome. Deandre mentions this in his Idology interview with Michael Slezak. He was supposed to sing one song he picked and then it was taken from him and made the “group” song. Why do this? The group song doesn’t matter but the individual does. In fairness shouldn’t Deandre been allowed to sing what he had practiced and not had it taken from him for the group song? Like you I do not believe Hollie had much if any choice in the songs.

Then if you have Blake Lewis who could re-arrange any song to suit him when dealt that blow. So what do they do? They have the coronation song be a big belter diva song and they tell him he can’t change it not one note. LOL as if Blake could win dealt that hand. He made such a stink that he received zero promotion and was dropped. Pick up his cd. Seriously, it is one of the BEST most current Idol cd’s ever made. I still like it even today.

If they can’t derail by the typcial methods, they get even more dirty like with Jason Castro, judging songs not yet sung Paula Gate, micing the guitar with the vocal and the vocal to the guitar, sit you in the dark, show you yawning and make the show about how you don’t care and yawn, or the VOTE DON’t Vote controversy.

    The examples are endless.

I really am sorry that Hollie went home, She, Elise and Phillip have been my favorites…but, I said last week that the final three were sitting on the couch, and it was so.

We can’t act as if the kids are sent home never to hear of them again, come on Hollie as well as my fav Phillip and Elise are off to the tour, then most likely to be signed, this is not the end of the road for Hollie, it is just the beginning…Jennifer Hudson any one!!!

If we can’ t be happy when our favorites go to the next round, well then there really is nothing left to talk about huh?

There have been a lot of allegations in the past by ousted contestants that have been brushed off as comments of a bitter loser. But there have also been comments that have been made by winners and runners up that are very telling of what really goes on behind the scenes of American Idol. This year has been especially brutal because of the competition with other networks. There is a dire need to have the absolute best technical singer win for AI to maintain respect and credibility as a true talent/singing competition. Even though it wasn’t even billed as solely a singing competition from the start. I don’t know how many times I have heard Simon Cowell say, “It isn’t just about the voice.” It isn’t called “American Singer” it’s called “American Idol”.

I don’t think all the suspicions here are unfounded. While I think they do actually consider the votes in deciding who stays and who goes. The producers also have a say in it. I don’t think that anyone is wishing anything bad on any one contestant. They just want the process to be fair.

There are more ways to get rid of a contestant you don’t particularly want to win the competition than manipulating votes. There are ways to make sure they don’t get the votes to start with. Just like in sports where the competitors try to get into their rivals heads psychologically the producers and other people that are supposed to be there to help do the dirty work on American Idol.

Either way, all of the top 10 were capable of winning this competition this year. All of them would have been deserving of the victory but a lot of people just like to see good things happen for good, wholesome, humble and likable people like Hollie, or DeAndre. It isn’t anything against Josh, or Phil or Jess. It’s just sad to see someone as meek and humble as Hollie have her dream of winning the competition crushed like that.

I am not saying that the 3 who are left are not good people but I do think they see what is happening to the other contestants and I know they are under a very strict one sided contractual agreement so they can’t really say anything against the machine that is American Idol but that doesn’t mean that they couldn’t speak out to TPTB on someone’s behalf behind closed doors. I know that it would probably mean they went home the next week but sometimes you have to stop being selfish and do the right thing. Actually, I think this is the fate that befalls a lot of the contestants when they have a so called “shocking elimination” like Colton and Pia Toscano and others.

    Just my 2 pennies….

  41. As we were discussing how sad it was that someone as sweet and talented as Hollie was eliminated, it did occur to me that none of us (except Vonnie) had expressed any sort of congratulations to the others who made the top three. Of course I should have included those comments too. I happen to love Joshua as well and I’m definitely glad he’s still there. Obviously, someone had to go. And there is absolutely no denying that Jessica is incredibly talented. Philip is talented too, but of the four who are remaining, he’s probably my least favorite. However, I agree that he sounded better singing the Volcano song than I’ve ever heard him and of all of the contestants, I enjoyed Hollie the least this week and was really sure she would be the one to go. I’m just sorry it turned out that way.

I’ve also always believed that Idol tries to influence voters by the judges’ comments. And I don’t doubt for a second that they manipulate the contestants with behind-the-scenes shenanigans, which could include song choices, vocal coaching, etc. Just as all of us have favorites, I guess they have favorites too. And they have the power to do something about it. We really have very little power.

I wish the best to Hollie, and all of the remaining contestants.

    Louise,

    Thank you!

I have learned alot over the years by watching my so compete at karate tournaments, no matter where he placed he was always the first one congratulating the winners and cheering up the losers, by telling them that, them coming out to the tournament and giving everything they had on the floor made them a winner, only yhose who never try are the losers…

Hollie along with Elise gave us their all, they aren’t losers, they made top 10 out of how many???

Louise is right there are 3 kids on that stage who have made it to the top 3, each one of them someone’s favorite.

Why do we cheer for the winners? Why don’ t we all drop our heads and cry at the superbowl because one team lost…please, let’s not be happy for the winner, because after all bad calls were made throughout the game!!!

I am happy for Phillip and I know I stand alone with him, but I am also happy for Jessica and Joshua, someone else’s favorites!!!

My points have nothing to do with the remaining three but rather about fairness. If say my fav Deandre was given facetime pre-voting rounds, the same amount of time rehearsing, a close the show performance slot, maybe he would be in the final 3. That is my point.

I wish all these talented kids well. Most however are not signed and do not make it in the biz. Even winners get dropped from labels etc. Singing is a tough biz.

  45. American Idol should be playing the song “Bye Bye Miss American Pie” at the beginning of their broadcast each week.

The “American Pie Syndrome” is felt by each contestant’s fans each time a contestant is ousted.

Just like in 1959 after that tragic plane crash that resounded like “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World”, when a viewers favorite leaves the show a lot of us tend to lose, if just for a short period of time, a tiny bit of appreciation for American Idol and for music itself. Fortunately for most that feeling is short lived.

Music is a universal language that spans cultures, races, religions, countries and continents as evident by the fandom of this website alone. Music holds the key to shaping our emotional status and in such a way that it can greatly impact our approach to the world as we head out on any given day to conduct our lives.

A lot of people lost their “Idol” on that fateful September day and never regained the level of appreciation for music that they had prior to that date. For many the music (any music) was just a painful reminder of those who had been lost and it takes some time to get over that feeling.

All of these contestants come into our homes by way of our TV sets but they also enter our hearts and minds and we grow to love them as if we have known them all of our lives. That’s what music does to us whether we like it or not and that is why emotions run so high on this site and all around the net where the subject is concerning American Idol.

For many people, the day that their American Idol leaves the show, is “The Day the Music Died”.

Happy Mothers Day to everyone who is and everyone who has a mother. I guess that would be an all inclusive wish wouldn’t it?

  53. Vonnie and Brother Karl. Sorry but there is no way Jose there will be a Top 2 male finale. If there is, well, call me drop-jaw surprised because this show has been aimed to showcase Joshua and Jessica as the Top 2.

BrotherKarl – thank you for your kind comments and your wonderful contributions to the MCL community.

Vonnie – the same to you as well. You have been a great resource here and I am grateful.

Happy Mother’s Day to you and yours!!

While I have been pretty adamant as to who I personally think is the most talented I’m pretty much in agreement with you that Joshua will not be in the top 2 and therefore the next to go. I’ve said from the beginning that in this competition it’s not always the most talented that wins but the person who can gather the most votes and ultimately reach the largest market with records. I definitely think Jessica could out sell Joshua.

    Vonnie
I did indeed have a day with the greatest two women in my life and I was particularly excited about sitting and talking with grandmother. Last year she was very ill and the doctors asked us if we wanted to pull the plug. I’m so proud of her, she walking, talking doing greater then any women I ever seen that age. So its was a very blessed day.

I have NO doubt at all that Phil will be the winner …. No Doubt. If Joshua did win I’d be shocked and I’d have to admit that I haven’t got a clue as to how this game is played. I’d admit it, but I’m pretty sure I won’t have to. Jessica #2 and the winner – Mr Phil Phillips

  55. Brother Karl – I still think that Joshua will be Top 2 with Jessica. I would be very surprised if P2 beats him at this point. But – you never know. I sincerely want a Joshua – Jessica Top 2 because I think it would be an explosive Finale. I guess we have to wait and see. It’s going to be a long 4 days!!

  57. Rosanne-I read somewhere that David Cook is moving to Nashville. Do you know if that is actually true, or is that just a rumour? It was going around quite awhile ago that David A. was moving there, but that wasn’t true. I know David A. has gone to Nashville numerous times to collaborate with songwritiers, most noteably, Joy Williams from the Civil Wars. But I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Cook collaborating with anyone there, so it’s a surprise to me to read of him moving there. I know for a fact that Cook very recently left RCA Records. Those two Davids! They sure are smart men that know what they want, and what is in their best interest!!

I’m sorry …I misunderstood your earlier post about Joshua.

I think whats going on with me is … I’ve got this little theory about the show that I;m testing this season. Almost ever season I have picked out the top 10 and the winner from their very first audition … and it was always just by chance, guessing … and it was really weird because I was usually right. Never really spoke to anybody about it, checked up on any sites, never posted, or had a discussion about it with fans. It was pretty freaky. This year I decided to pay close attention to see if there was some kind of real method to any of my madness regarding the show so I started tracking my inclinations to see what different things were going on … that was getting me so so close to those conclusions, and once again what I have been predicting through out this seasons show, is pretty much spot on. Not 100% but real close. Call me a nut case or whatever …but if Phil wins ….I’ll probably have the “big head” or be unbearable or something because once again I will have picked a winner and proven to myself that everything I believe about the way this show works ..is true.

Of course I would love to see Joshua and Jessica be in the top 2 …they are and have been my favorites throughout the show and the two I have been voting for every week but according to my little nutty theories.. for what ever they’re worth… I don;t see it. It would probably be better for me that they DO win like you;re saying…then I’d HAVE TO shut my big trap. So for me ..its more about me learning if I’m on to something this year rather then just enjoying the show and rooting for my favorite .

  60. I would love to know what your theories are! I have never picked a winner except for Kelly first season but in my opinion that is the only season without manipulation. Though I watch every year I have only had two huge favorites Daughtry and Adam. They have gone on to much more success than the winners their said years. But I was literally shocked when both did not win.

I have had favorites that I did not think would win Jason and Deandre.

So I would personally like to read your theories.

  61. Hey Aubrey

Once I see whether Phil wins or not …then ‘ll be able to say for certain how I really believe this game is being played. It might just be a bunch of silliness but I can tell you this …while talent is part of it …its the smallest part. It really looks like it has more to do with projected confidence, humility and the contestants interaction with the judges and other contestants which by the time the final 12 are picked has already taken place.

I hear a lot of people say there’s a lot of manipulating going on. Well, thats a no brainer. Its not a deep revelation. You HAVE TO make an certain impression on the judges, and producers to even get in the top 24. And by the time you are there, those impressions are already made. If the contestant fails at making those impressions early on … its a done deal. It really doesn’t matter how talented you are or how well you perform. I personally don;t think its a fault of the show. To me its just common. I have had several companies. Sometime the most talented people who would apply, were the most arrogant. And then there was the flip side. There were some people who had the great experience but didn’t display the confidence that I knew it would take. Both are talented probably more talented the most, but the problems our company would have because of those not so perfect characteristics , made those people not worth pushing much further. When it comes to promotion, If they fail to make that impression on me …I’m going to make sure I communicate that to anybody that asks me what do I think.

I will never forget Justin Gurinni in the first season. Simon critiqued him and Justin looked at Simon and said “well thats what you think lets see what America thinks”. It was almost as if what Simon had to say meant nothing at all. And Justins career has just been a dud not because of his talent but because of his attitude. Richie Law (Cowboy) who auditioned this year, had great voice but he was arrogant, he wouldn’t rehearse, rubbed the other contestants the wrong way, everybody spoke to him about it, but he never changed, it reflected in his performances and dispite his talent, he wasn’t selected. Even if he had of been selected he would have not won because he made those wrong initial first impressions on everybody around him and the viewers. His talents nor his performances would have helped him.

To me you have got to make those first impressions that have to do with more than just your talent. That is how you get the story lines, the last performances you guys talked about, the extra time with the mentors and if you fail at making those impressions, nobody is going to push you but your fans. I really believe thats all a part of it and if you fail …its not the judges fault. Your job is to make the right impression on everybody
and if you fail to do it, them why should you win

So … I’m looking at their interactions with everybody, not their talent. You guys talked about how when Hollie got voted off how THEY all gathered around her. Thats THEIR character speaking, not their talent. Some were even crying . If you have a tape
roll it back. Watch how they interact with each other. Hejune , a great singer, but very silly and not focused . When Joshua performed with Phil the first time. It seemed almost like Joshua hated doing it. It speaks volumes about his character. Talent is one thing, likability among those you work with is another and I;m looking at all of it.

One forgets that David Cook is a very wise musician with many colleagues and Simon Fuller is his manager. They have certainly decided to go it their way and with his voice and his ability to write songs I have no doubt that it will be the right decision. I have just noticed that one of Fullers stable is Bon Jovi and David opened for him. He has decided to move closer to family and Nashville is nearer. I am waiting for his music and I loved both albums and still do as they are on continuous play.
