Vocal Masterclass Discussion For American Idol Season 11 Top 11 Results Show: Birth Year Songs

I will be missing this evening’s Results Show, so I am counting on the MCL public to add their comments and spoilers.

With Jermaine Jones’ disqualification, the Top 12 quickly became 11 this week. I would like to add that I absolutely loved his pre-taped version of “Somewhere Out There”. I wish him the very best, hoping that his life takes a turn for the better.

I wonder how the producers will address this issue. Presently, the elimination process is off schedule.

Will someone still be eliminated this evening or will everyone have another chance to perform next week to ensure a position in the Top 10 line-up?

I guess we will find out in a few hours. It should be an interesting show, nonetheless. Scheduled to perform are Daughtry and Demi Lovato.

Hit the comments with your thoughts on last night’s show and come back to blab about the results.

  1. Finally finding my way back here! I’ve been a little M.I.A. FOr some reason, I found it hard to get into “Idol” this year, not too sure why. I watched a bit of the auditions and finally, last night, “forced” (for lack of a better word) to sit and watch the performance. I didn’t a chance to watch all of them, mind you, but saw a few. I, too, was curious as to what will happen with the disqualification of the one contestant…will there be an elimination tonight? I hope not as I don’t think it would be fair.

I’m not sure whose performance I enjoyed the most last night…the one that I really wasn’t a fan of was Jessica’s. I found she was really hard to understand and some of her notes where off. I definitely applaud her, though, for trying the song…but feel there were better choices for her.

I’m hoping I can watch the results show tonight.

  2. Assuming there is an elimination tonite, I could see either Deandre or Jessica going home. They both sounded ‘off’ and Deandre–IMO–almost sounds karoake. Though Mr. B does have a good stage presence.

A question: Since Ms. Sanchez is only 15, could seh have had some vocal issues since she sang that Whitney Houston song last week with the BIG notes?

So far as Heejun Hun is concerned, he has a WONDERFUL pure tone and I find his voice soothing:) I did like what The Dawg said that he assumed Mr. Hun only sang R&B. I applaud him for tattempting that Richard Marx song:) Excuse me, that should be Han:)

  3. I was pleasantly surprised tonight when it was announced that Shannon was being eliminated. She’s a talented girl, but I think she should have waited a few more years. I honestly didn’t enjoy her performances from either week. I really thought that Heejun would be the one to go, but I was glad to see him get through. I guess they really needed five girls and five boys on the tour.

I was also very happy to see DeAndre, Elise, and Erika make it through. I had a few doubts that they would, but I want to hear more from all of them. So far they are not the standouts of the group, but I think they have it in them to be much better. They’re also much more interesting singers to me than Jessica. Jessica has an amazing voice, but I prefer listening to the voices of some of the others.

So I’m now looking forward to a great season!!!

  4. I checked MJ’s blog and the theme for next week is songs by Billy Joel. So we will be hearing some golden oldies. This should be interesting.

Regarding tonight’s results show, the one thing that concerned me was seeing three girls in the bottom again. That’s not a good sign. I feel for Erika and Elise, who have been in the bottom for two weeks running now.

  5. I was upset with Shannon’s elimination. She showed so much promise and is such a lovely person. They had a Top 11 tour last year – why the change? (sigh)

  6. James – Jessica, generally, sings with good technique. This week, the performance was better than the vocals but it certainly was not as bad as the judges’ made it out to be.

I think she wanted to show a different aspect to her performing skills and I loved it. The girl is so talented, really interacted with the camera and moved so easily about the stage.

She added her personal style to this song – excellent work.

  7. Welcome back bizzee. I must be one of the few that loved Jessica’s performance. And DeAndre. The two of them are real stars. Shannon was eliminated far too early – the girl was becoming more confident with each passing week. She also had the like ability factor going for her and would have been a better for for the tour than say Elise.

  8. MCL, it is possible they may have seen something with Shannon that would not be good for her being on the tour? She may have even made the TOP 13 because of who her father is? Seems like a really sweet girl. I wish her the best!

This looks like a good line-up and I am hoping for some special moments. I had 5
I was rooting for but now have cut it down to Jessica and Colton. Some are worried that Colton’s desire to do Christian Rock may be used against him. With the way he performs, I doubt that.

I know it’s been many years since Idol has had the Billy Joel theme, but I had hoped they would one day have a FOLK or FOLK ROCK theme. They have never done that one yet and with Bob Dylan’s new album being released, now is about time.

I still am not sure if I like Jimmy Iovine’s role on the show, but the judging is still not up to par – so I guess they need him? Now, the fun part begins!

  9. What…Shannon was eliminated? 😦 That makes me very sad. I missed the results. I really liked her. IT’s too bad they don’t wait two weeks to begin eliminations, this way we get the chance to see more of the singers. (Unless they do, like I said, this week was my first week being able to watch it). They shouldn’t have done an elimination this week…more specifically because of Jermaine…but it would have been nice to hear more of the singers. 🙂

  10. Kariann – Lauren had many vocal problems last season, worse than Shannon I thought. And I think there was a connection happening with her Idol success – everyone, including her parents, seemed really comfy around Steven Tyler from Day One.

Shannon would have even very popular on tour. I think they just didn’t want vote splitting between her, Jessica and Hollie – I think the show is leaning toward Jessica but we shall see.

  11. kariann,

I am with you in wanting a folk rock theme. I think Bob Dylan’s new album coming out, is perfect timing. Some people on other blog sites are already complaining about the “old” Billy Joel theme. At least these young people will have some great material to choose from. Michael Slezak already had his song choices for the contestants up last night. I listened to some of the ones that I didn’t remember that well. All great stuff!

Slezak also felt that Deandre was much better than the judges gave him credit for. He said his vocals were very strong. You know Slezak. He doesn’t pull any punches.

I am starting to have some real issues with some of the judging. I didn’t understand why they felt the need to harp on the bad song choice with Deandre, when JLo said he sang it well. So, what’s the problem? If he sang it well, then who cares if they didn’t love the song choice! That means he brought the goods.

With Jessica they were blabbing about ballads. Well, this girl wanted to avoid that trap by changing things up with his uptempo number. What’s wrong with that? Or have the judges already forgotten what happened to Pia last season? I don’t think it was Jessica’s best vocal, but the performance value was excellent and it showed fearlessness and versatility I don’t get the judges contradicting themselves. Jessica cannot win this singing only power ballads and they know that.

I am a bit concerned for Hollie. Someone on another topic thread said she needs to take her foot off the gas pedal. I thought that was a brilliant point. She has to change it up next week and show that she can do something different. She should try to hold back a little and not go full out with the power vocals all the time. We need to see some nuance and restraint from her. I think with her voice, she can sing anything.

JLo said something to Deandre about changing the key of the song. I didn’t hear anything wrong with the key at all. I just think that Deandre is finding his way and trying to figure out how it best use his voice.

Also, I do think that eliminating Shannon had something to do with Jessica and Hollie. With these two strong power singers, the judges may have felt that Shannon was too much of the same. However, I also believe that there is no way they will use the save this early, given what happened last season. They will use it for someone who is a strong contender and has a real shot to win.

  12. I agree with those who said that Shannon was too similar to Hollie and Jessica. It seems to me that they probably wanted to eliminate one girl in order to have 5 girls and 5 guys in the top 10, and Shannon, although very talented, had one of the weaker performances. I know that Elise had her problems too in the first week, but they really liked her this past week. In other words, I think AI manipulates who leaves and who stays–at least to some extent.

  13. I am still waiting for Jessica to sing more current songs like those done by Beyonce and Rihanna, the songs that her generation likes. I saw some of her Youtube videos. She sang them well. She had a pretty voice quite similar to Beyonce and Rihanna. And most of all, she seemed to enjoy singing those songs. As we have observed, when Jessica sings, she gets involved or engaged in the (interpretation of the) song. Among the contestants, she is one of the best interpreter of songs, not necessarily the best technical singer, but among the best performers, in my opinion.
