Another year, another show!   American Idol Season 9 is ready to roll tomorrow evening at 8:00 P.M. and it will be a two-hour show featuring the Top 12 Female Semi-Finalists.

And, as you can plainly see, I have a personal early favorite – Lilly Scott – for two reasons. 

Numero Uno, she shares the same name as my recently deceased dear Mom and, so, I was naturally drawn to her.

Secondly, I love her style of singing and her “look ” – both are extremely distinctive.

So, Lilly, we shall see what happens over the interim, but you are definitely the one of the singers to watch.

Then, on Wednesday, February 24th, the Top 12 Male Semi-Finalists will showcase their vocal talent during a two-hour telecast on Fox.

Following this, on Thursday, January 25th, four singers – two female and two male- will be eliminated after a nationwide vote.

I love this format, as it affords the viewers the opportunity to become thoroughly acquainted with each of the singers before the Top 12 Finalists are announced. The decision- making process becomes more logical and, hopefully, more obvious. The viewers are not voting on the basis of one quick impression – which can lead to poor judgement during the voting process.

As an example, I remember not being fully impressed with Season 7 winner, David Cook, during his first performance; however, by the 2nd and, most definitely, 3rd semi-final show, he showed his true artistic and vocal colors and won over thousands of viewers before the show announced the Top 12 Finalists. 

Also, repeated live Top 24 semi-final performances over  a three-week-period are extremely beneficial to the singers, as it affords them the opportunity to become accustomed to the live format of the show prior to the first Top 12 live telecast.

This season’s group of singers appear to be vocally strong, diverse and extremely marketable. In fact, at this point in time, I am hard-pressed to select  several early favorites (with the exception of Lilly) – although, I strongly suspect that this year’s winner will be a female.  Overall, the girls appear to be more distinctive in style, but, there are some very good male singers who may just surprise all of us!

I love the addition of Ellen DeGeneres as judge – she is witty, she is honest, without being cruel and she is extremely likeable as a person.  However, Kara DioGuardi is very bright and technically and musically sound – she knows what works and what doesn’t in the music industry and her comments should be highly regarded as sound and beneficial for the singers.

I love Randy – he just loves what he loves, doesn’t he?  Although he doesn’t always contribute a vast amount of advice for the singers to take home each week,  he knows the “biz” and seems to support those singers whom he feels will be most marketable in the music industry.

Ditto for Simon – although, he operates without a filter and that sometimes works and then doesn’t.  However, he has been successful for a reason – he cuts through the BS (pardon my language) and knows – just knows – who the “next big star” will or should be. And this is what he looks for in the future of the next American Idol.

Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler. She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8. In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman. In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins. In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright. In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins. Under Rosanne Simunovic’s direction, the Timmins Youth Singers and the Timmins Concert Singers have been featured in numerous choral festivals and performing opportunities outside of Timmins.     Hi MCL…I agree with you about Lilly, I really like her and the Bowersox girl.

    It is hard to predict for me whether it will be a boy or a girl this year…this really is a talented bunch!

    I have no favorites at this point, although I am generally impressed with the quality there seems to be, which means that this top 12 has the chance to be strong all the way, which it has never done before. Of course, I guess we’ve got to expect the oddity or two! I’m interested to see what happens this week.

    MCL, I am very happy you started this thread! Vonnie and I have had our “own” thread going and I was teasing her about it.

    I am impressed with Lilly, Didi, and Crystal Bowersox. Yes, the girls are quite talented, but I’m not sure about Haeley. Maybe she’ll be more relaxed this week? I know nothing about Paige Miles, Michelle Delamor, and Jose Munoz.

    I hope the issue of Todrick Hall will be settled this week with his dismissal.

    Overall, it looks like we will have a better season than Season 8. I hope…I hope.

    Hi, everyone . . . I can’t wait for tonight’s performances. There does seem to be a lot of talent in this year’s top 24 and I am very much looking forward to hearing everyone over the next two nights. I agree that Lily has been very impressive, but I am far from having a favorite at this point.

    I also agree with you, MCL, about Ellen. I love Ellen, and it was so much more pleasant to watch last week without the childish wrangling between Paula and Simon. Did you hear that she has invited the contestant who wasn’t put through after the fourth try–I think her name was Angela–to her show? She said that Kara is going to write a song for her and they will see that she gets to record it.

    Hi Louise an KariAnn! Nice to see you once again.

    KariAnn – I confess I am a bit “out of the loop” with American Idol this year. What is the issue with Todrick Hall? Why was he dismissed? I can’t remember him.

    Louise – what great news for Angela – I think this is her name. Ellen is so supportive to these singers and will open many, many doors for them. How nice that Kara is composing a song for Angela. Very sweet indeed.
