Katharine McPhee’s Outstanding Performance With Chris Botti

I have watched and re-watched this video countless times and I thank one of my readers – “luv” – for providing me with this wonderful performance by Katharine McPhee.

Below, you will find a glorious performance of Katharine in concert with the incredibly talented Chris Botti. Performing the classic I’ve Got You Under My Skin”, I have to say that Katharine has evolved into an exquisitely refined and sophisticated performer.

Additionally, her artistry, in combination with her impeccable vocals, is just a joy to hear and see. She is so talented and so comfortable immersed in music from the big band era and, yet, she seems so current and fresh.

She is a distinctive artist who definitely adds her feminine magic to this genre as Michael Buble does through his masculine charisma. Both artists are contemporary in their approach to this music and, thus, have transformed, elevated and popularized this style of music, attracting new listeners – both young and old.

Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler. She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8. In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman. In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins. In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright. In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins. Under Rosanne Simunovic’s direction, the Timmins Youth Singers and the Timmins Concert Singers have been featured in numerous choral festivals and performing opportunities outside of Timmins.     I just wanted to transfer my comment over here. I LOVE this performance; I cannot stop listening to it. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been this excited about one of Katharine’s performances; brava for her!

    Wow, that performance is the best I’ve heard from Katharine in a long time! I love her sultry approach to this song! She really ought to do this genre of music. And I love the range of this song for her voice. Katharine sounds so much better when she’s not pushing the limits of her range. (EDIT: She sounds so relaxed as MCL noted two posts ago.)

    I really like her note at 3:44, not because it’s particularly high (it’s a D5) but because it seems to show that Katharine’s gotten a lot better at navigating and smoothing out the register changes in her voice. She’s had trouble with notes in that region in the past, and here her voice sounds much more “connected.” Good for her! I hope to hear more. =)

    I heard some of her more contemporary pop stuff and it’s clearly polished but over produced, like most stuff these days. Buttttt…, Kathrine’s style with the standards and orchestra and big band is superb. This should be, clearly, her long term future. She has the opportunity to help transform and promote the great standards and works of Sinatra, Billy Holiday etc. for the younger generation. I hope she hangs around with quality writers and arrangers … She’ll learn a lot and we all will benefit as she grows.

    Katharine continues to improve, and, amazingly, seems even more beautiful than ever! Given this trajectory, it is truly exciting to contemplate where she might be ten years from now, still radiantly beautiful, but with even more polish and range. Losing American Idol might be the best thing that ever happened to her.

    Amazing. The difference between her performance on the David Foster PBS special (which was magnificent) was just mind blowing. She had gone from a growing talent to a true sultry maximum talent. This is a genre she should continue and we will all benefit. I’m trying to find a DVD of this performance. Where? And thanks so much to Chris and of course Catherine. Keep on the track with the quality whom have taken you under their wings and you will have a career that will last longer than any of us. You will be a legend.

    I saw Katharine’s performance on the local PBS station and it grabbed me like no performance I have ever seen. I’ve watched the performance over ten times on the internet, and I never get tired of it.
    Beautiful person, beautiful voice. You gotta love it.

    Bob – I constantly watch this performance as well. Although she wants to make waves in the pop genre, I really believe that big band music is where she belongs. She is perfection when she sings this wonderful music. Gorgeous!

    I can’t stop looking at this performance. Kathrine looks and sounds great. I can’t blame Chris for liking her so much. She is stunning in this video. I could watch it a hundred times and not get tired of it.
