Vocal Masterclass Discussion Thread For Canadian Idol Top 5 Performances Featuring Music From The Beatles

A full week has gone by and I still I can’t believe that Amberly Thiessen has been eliminated from this competition. What a season this has become! To be absolutely blunt, this season has emerged as an uninspired and arid competition, lacking any element of artistic creativity or imagination.

Perhaps, the Top 5 males will surprise me this evening. Nothing would make me happier. However, truth be told, there is such a lack of true vocal talent in this year’s crop of singers, that I am not counting on any positive surprises.

Season Six salvation will materialize through Theo and Drew and, perhaps, Mookie; however, in the case of Mookie, we are talking about a young man with a dream of greatness and a deficit of vocal competency. Nice kid, probably the sweetest contestant on the show, but, for me, that’s not enough.

Hopefully, Mookie is hanging out with Theo, so that the latter can show the former how to vocalize through the support of the diaphragm.

Let’s see what we have here. It’s almost showtime in Eastern Canada. Looking forward to your lively commentary, readers.

  1. Drew was outstanding this week. My favourite of the night. It was everything you can expect on these shows. Great vocal, emotional delivery and original interpretation. I think I even saw all 4 judges give him a standing ovation (finally!!!!). Out of the remaining 5, I think he would sound the best on the radio and would probably sell a lot of records. There’s just something really sweet about his voice/sound.

Earl surprised me. My second favourite of the night. When he tones it down like he did tonight, I really like him. When he overdoes the antics, I find myself wanting to switch the channel.

Theo. My 3rd favourite of the night. I love Theo and his rich voice, but I think this was a little bit too much something…something that I can’t quite put my finger on. Still better than my bottom 2 (who actually weren’t THAT bad)…

Mookie and Mitch. Can’t really rank them. Mookie probably had one of his weakest vocals to-date, but he’s still entertaining. With Mitch, I find him to be a nice kid, but I’m not a fan of his voice.

Overall, this was a much better show than previous weeks.

Who I’m voting for: Drew and Theo.

  2. Well – perhaps I spoke too soon?

Idolina-You were a huge fan of Drew from Day One, so he should send you a bouquet of roses when this is over and, especially if he wins the competition.

And, I called him a dark horse – I had visions of Brian Melo all over again and, you know what? It may happen.

Show starts in about 40 minutes. Will check back later.

    Thanks Idolina

  3. LOL MCL. I think as the really bad contestants leave, the show gets better. The judges also did a good job of selecting the songs which really helped tonight. The choices for Drew and Earl were bang on.

Yes…Drew owes me a million roses! Hahaha. Beneath all the layers, I try to find the pretty voices, and Drew’s stood out to me from day one. There’s something about his voice that I love and I am certain that he would sound great on the radio. He also has a very good vocal performance of Hallelujah on You Tube for those who want to see it.

Things get interesting because Theo has been really consistent and earned the title, but I prefer the sound of Drew’s voice. I think I’ll vote for both of them.

  4. I adore Theo…tonight tho, I think the orchestration was just a bit over the top. Vocals superb! Best night for Drew yet, whom I don’t usually like. Not Mookie’s best. Wow Earl! Too bad for Mitch – last week was steller but this week only so so!

  5. Hey Theodora. I agree about Theo. It was good vocally, but maybe a bit too robust? It was too much something, but can’t quite put my finger on it, but I hope he doesn’t go home. It was still good, but when you’re down to 5 it gets scary. Earl and Drew really stepped up, so it’s going to be interesting.

  6. I guess I’m the only one who thought that Theo was absolutely brilliant. His interpretation and vocal delivery was one of the best things I have ever heard on this show. A little shaky in the front end of this song, but the back end of the song? Magic! And I was thinking the same way as Zack – we have never had such a technically mature male singer on this show.

I didn’t like Drew’s song – but his vocals were extremely pure. His upper range has real clarity and there is a refinement in his voice which I very much appreciate.

The others? Oh dear. Mitch was embarrasingly out of tune and the background singers were horrid. Just horrid!

Mookie – not as good as last week and Earl – sorry – but all the hoopla in the background couldn’t disguise the poorly defined arrangement and mediocre vocals.

  7. ^ Oh, I’m with you. I LOVE Theo this week as much as ever. I’m so glad he finally decided to add more roundness to his singing; he struck the right balance between classical and pop sensibility with this performance.

I’m still replaying last week’s performance of “Sweet Ones” too. It’s slowly becoming my favorite. I simply love his interpretation of that song. Amazing.

Drew was also great this week. (And I honestly don’t bother to listen to anyone else.)

  8. Hey MCL. You’re the masterclasslady, so who am I to argue?? Haha…
Actually, I do think that Theo was strong, but not as much as previous weeks. I’m worried about him this week, although I still had him ranked higher than Mookie and Mitch. Earl and Drew really stepped it up, which could spell trouble for Theo (Earl stealing some Alberta votes, and Drew getting casual votes).

I’ve said it before, but I really love the sound of Drew’s voice. I think it’s pretty and he’d sound great on the radio. With a good manager, he could sell a lot of records because of that sound.

I voted for Drew and Theo and hope they both live to see at least another week.

  9. Hi everyone. Let’s hope Theo and Drew are safe. We don’t want another Amberly situation to occur!

I’m kinda nervous tonight for some reason. Let’s hope it all works out.

  10. Hey MCL – Well I sat through the Canadian Idol Show last evening and this morning my muscles were so sore! I couldn’t figure out why – I didn’t exercise yesterday – it was a stress free day….
Oh yes! I was tense every time these 5 singers sang sharp or flat – which was quite often. Theo and Drew WERE the best of the night but even they had their pitchy moments and I’m sorry I don’t want to tense up when I am listening to music. Music usually soothes me. When one of these gentlemen sign a record deal at the end of this whole fiasco I want to listen to him and enjoy every note. I don’t want to drive on a bumpy road and I fear these “artist” make me feel this way (usually not theo but he had his shakey notes yesterday – I do agree with you 100% though that the end of his song was pure magic… when he held that note). And I’m sorry, but for Mitch to not have EVER SEEN the bottom 3 is unbelievable! Of all 5 singers last night, I just could not stand to listen to him. It was painful. I am sorry if this is harsh but I’ve been a huge fan of these idol shows and I am very disappointed that some of these singers are getting WAY more praise than they deserve and by NO means is this the best idol season ever!!!! BY NO MEANS!! I will end this now for my back has seized up once again…

  11. Well, Theodora, Idolina and CookieMonster – we will find out soon if Theo escaped elimination. If you browse over to the CTV Message Board, he was not a favorite last night at all. Why am I not surprised?

This show is really, really a mess this year -the judges have been forced (c’mon, when have all the judges been so positive for each performer) to praise each singer and pay no attention to the fact that few of them can sing.

CookieMonster – watch yourself. You sound like you are coming down with the flu. Take it easy and, remember, it’s just a show!

  12. Well Mookie went home and I can’t say I’m surprised about that. I posted yesterday that he had one of his worst vocals to-date. Great presence and I love watching him, but not the singing. I think Mitch should have gone home, but I had Mookie and Mitch in my b2.

I am surprised that Drew was in the bottom 2 after his performance and after singing last. I think Drew will benefit from the other Ontarian going home (Mookie). Next week will probably be the Albertans’ turn.

How Mitch has escaped a trip to the bottom 3 is beyond me.

Can we bring Amberly back and have a top 3 with Drew, Theo and Amberly???

  14. Ugh is definitely right. My favourite voice in the bottom 2, while Mitch and Earl escape it. I just don’t get it. On a side note, Drew and Theo sounded great on the results show tonight. Let it Be is a much better choice for Theo.

  15. Yes, I agree, Drew and Earl sounded terrific. Will they be Top 2? Who knows?

I can’t imagine what will happen next week with Ann Murray as guest mentor. It makes me laugh just thinking about it.

  16. Still can’t believe Drew was in the bottom 2. Makes me sad :(, but he’ll get a boost from Ontario with Mookie going home.

Same feeling I got when Amberly went home.

  17. I’m with you MCL 100%. I really love Theo and his version of Collide a few weeks ago was amazing. He’s actually quite diverse and I think he suffered from a “too predictable” choice by the judges. Mitch hasn’t connected with me but I do like when Earl gets into the Dave Matthews vibe. I loved Drew’s song – I met a fellow (at a busines function) who’s played with Drew. He had very nice things to say about him.

I think CI suffers from the fact that it’s summer and vacations mean that people voting one week may be away the following week so things can get wonky. Also, these shows are a huge time hog which is easier to justify in the cold winter.

    I agree…Anne Murray?

  18. Drefussca – I agree. Summertime and Idol does nothing for me. I barely hit the TV in the winter, but, given the cold weather, you are indoors more and, therefore, more apt to watch TV.

January – May is THE perfect timeframe for American Idol and I always said that August – November would work for Canadian Idol,

Oh well, this year is quite a bust I’m afraid.

They had the right idea during Seaosn 2 when they searched for singers of different genres. This year is just too strange for me.
