Vocal Masterclass Discussion Thread For The Top 8 Performances On Canadian Idol

Well, that was an interesting evening of music. Not at all what I expected from these singers.

As I try to grasp for words in writing this week’s Masterclass article, please feel free to add your comments in this post.

Who were your favorites? Did you feel the singing was on par with last week’s or previous weeks’ performances? Who is the chosen eliminated one? Were you happy about the song choices? So many questions, so little time.

Overall this was a tremendously weak show. The singing was not good, folks. And the song choices? Woah! That’s another story. I think Carly and Brian rose to the occasion and I felt that Martha was not given her due from the judges. The girl can sing – give her a break already.

I will attempt to have the Masterclass evaluation up as soon as possible.

About Masterclass Lady

Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler. She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8. In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman. In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins. In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright. In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins. Under Rosanne Simunovic’s direction, the Timmins Youth Singers and the Timmins Concert Singers have been featured in numerous choral festivals and performing opportunities outside of Timmins.     I agree, MCL, with what you said about Martha Joy. I thought she gave a lovely performance last night, but the judges were still hard on her.

    Yes, Beth, I am getting tired of the judges saying she has a beautiful voice but they aren’t “feeling” her.

    She doesn’t really have a whole lot of the “likeability” factor going for her, but you cannot deny her talent.

    I thought this was a singing competition?

    Jerk Gold is really out to get Martha. He is going around the radio circuit berating her. I’ve heard one of his comments from a major radio station in Toronto where he repeated that Martha is stiff and she doesn’t know how to groove. These were the comments he gave Martha on the Idol show. The tone of his voice is of mockery.

    Martha doesn’t stand a chance of winning if this judge continues with his unprofessional conduct outside CI.

    Jerk Gold has a vendetta against Martha. What it is, only he knows.

    Mark – I hear ya! I have had enough of this show this year, but I will keep on slugging out the Masterclass articles – if only to support true singers like Martha.

    I don’t think this girl could do more than she did last night – plus she has become more accommodating and sincere when dealing with the post – Idol “judging”.

    I don’t know what his problem is, but he had an identical issue with Season 3 semi-finalist Matt Humphreys and I am glad that Matt did not move on with the show, as he would have had to endure the same negative bias the longer he remained.

    Say what you want, but even though we are “voting” the contestants through, one finger is on the phone dial and one ear is listening to the judges.

    I wish the voters would think for themselves.
