Preston – thanks so much. Blake is the only one singing three new songs. Good for him!

Now I’ve heard that the two Melinda spoilers (other than Randy’s pick) are false.
I must say I’m quite excited about tonight… hoping the best for Melinda and planning on voting for her for a lengthy amount of time after the show.

Blake is not singing Lost Without You….The artists are correct though. 🙂 I think…heh.

Now… was Melinda STELLAR tonight or what?!
I have to give Blake and Jordin their props, though… they both had great nights as well.
The strength of tonight’s performances reminds me of how good season two’s top three was. That’s a very good thing!

Off for a good night’s sleep, but, yes – Melinda really was excellent. All three were pretty solid and I will address all this in my Top 3 Vocal Masterclass article.

THIS is a competition! Melinda was my favorite, but they were all good and I wouldn’t want to bet on the outcome. I just saw that DialIdol has Melinda on top and Blake on the bottom–but Blake and Jordin are really quite close. And DialIdol is not always correct.
Although I was pleased by Simon’s comments about Melinda, I always wonder if he’s being really truthful or trying to manipulate the voting. In other words, by being so pro Melinda last night, was he really trying to get the Jordin and Blake fans to vote more for their favorites?

On the fly:
Jordin
Wishing On a Star – shaky start; too high for her? Got better as the song unfolded and ended well.
Hard For the Money – She’s working it, singing well, but not performing.
I Who Have Nothing – repeat song from Top 11. Starts very well; some intrusive stuff from the band; a bit screechy at the end.
She sure is chatty.
Blake
Roxanne – Sounds like the Sting-man which is always appreciated. Hit a rough patch in mid-song but recovered. He slid to the edge of the stage for his ending. WOO! Standing O.
This Love – Very entertaining. Audience loved it; so did the judges.
When I Get You Alone – Working for me – am wondering if Robin Thicke sings it in extreme falsetto? Great response from the audience again. He is truly the entertainer of the bunch.
Melinda
I Believe in You and Me – Enjoying the layers in her voice per usual. Awkward toward the end. It didn’t move me.
Nutbush City Limits – Ugh. This does not showcase her vocals. I’m afraid that Melinda started so strong in the competition and there isn’t a whole lot of room for growth.
I’m a Woman – reminiscing of the Enjoli ad . . . awkwardly carrying her jacket, but then adroitly drops it on the floor, which for me, was the best part. That move also elicited a “strip show” comment from Simon. So-so for me, crowd loved it. I’m afraid that Melinda started so strong that it now seems like she can’t improve. Perhaps the stress to top herself has gotten to her.
Blake was the only one who did three original songs. Props to him.

Aaargh. Looks like my comments went to the spam file. 😆

Melinda brought her A game last night. She had a few mistakes (her voice cracked on the high note of “I Believe in You and Me” and she forgot the first verses of “I’m a Woman”), but she covered the mistakes like a true pro.
Blake was a nice surprise for me. I think he was very solid on his 3 performances.
Jordin was regular. The only standout performance of hers last night was “I Who Have Nothing”.
Based on the performances, the finale should be Melinda x Blake.

WordPress said that sometimes the IP address of the person affects the spam program. I guess if you post from an internet cafe or something? Who knows? I caught it and that’s all that matters.
Great comments, by the way.

MCL,
Maybe I am just a SPAM kind of girl. Hee hee. Maybe it is the way I format it? Anyway, thanks for retrieving my thoughts. Can’t wait to see your critique. And I hope you are back to 100% after that awful flu!

I really don’t know who I like best. They all have something I love. But I want to see Blake in the finale, because it would be more of a contrast which makes it more interesting. And if I had to choose between Melinda and Jordin, then I pick Melinda, because as much as I love Jordin, she’s not consistent, and the past two weeks she’s been annoying with her incessant “thank you!”
I also think Jordin was the weakest last night, though I did enjoy all of her performances. Whatever happens, I am really happy that they were the top 3 this season. Definitely my favorite top 3 of any Idol show I’ve watched.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but my all-time favorite top 3 remains the Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice, Vonzell Solomon matchup. I thought the only sure thing out of that one was Bo. And now Carrie is the undisputed queen of country.

I just read about the ZabaSearch site which predicts AI standings. According to their site, “ZabaSearch projects the voting outcome of the last 6 American Idol shows of each season. ZabaSearch projected correctly every time in 2006 and is 4 for 4 in 2007 with two shows to go.” Right now they have Blake in the lead with 33.80%, Jordin with 33.65%, and Melinda with 33%. I hope that’s not the real outcome.

Melinda leaving? Well, that would just be so sad. But not surpising since this, after all, American Idol.

I am so mad!!!!!!! A season that started out with two powerhouses–Melinda and Lakisha–and neither will be in the final. Unbelievable!!!

Well, what a surprise! I will never understand the voting process.
However – you know that Miss Melinda is going to continue on her road to superstardom. Rest assured of this fact.
The Masterclass article will be online tomorrow if i can ever stop the incessant ringing of my office. Must be a full moon or something.

Wow, I’m stunned. To me, Melinda is a fantastically talented singer as well as a wonderful performer. She should be the next American Idol!

I am truly saddened.
After what Simon said last night and with the great performance she gave … however, I am just going to go to sleep and write more tomorrow.
Melinda, Phil and Kiki gone.
There is something really sad about this.
However, I know Melinda will have a wonderful career. Phoebe Snow was not accepted into the Rutgers Jazz Program , they said she could not sing!
So, no accounting for peoples hearing.
Sorry, I better go I am not being nice.
Jordin did a very nice job, she is beautiful and needs more seasoning so they do not blow her voice out.
Tina, Gladys, Aretha, and Melinda!

The more I’ve thought about this, I think Melinda was voted off because Blake and Jordin both appeal to teenagers who were more inclined to vote obsessively multiple times. And I think that’s exactly what AI wanted to happen–even though Melinda was a better singer.
I wish Melinda the very, very best and can’t wait to buy her first CD or see her perform somewhere.
And MCL, what did you think of Elliott last night? I’ve always loved Elliott’s voice and I think the longer hair is a big improvement too!
LikeLike
Elaine – Elliott was fabulous. His voice is so darn beautiful and he flawlessly sang a very complicated number.
You are also correct about the Final 2. AI wants an audience and now they have one. Don’t worry about Melinda – she is going to be HUGE.

Melinda was by far the best talent that has ever crossed an A.I. stage…unfortunately..the voters don’t always recognize talent. When are the going to start practicing what they preach..this is not about looks..it is about vocal talent! Is America not sick of anorexic “beauty queens”…then put the votes where they belong…on the vocal talent!

I’m actually sick. I know the reasons, but the best singer by a mile was voted off last night. I’m not so sure her career is a foregone conclusion either. It’s precisely because she doesn’t have a niche (she does EVERYTHING well), that she needs someone to find one for her and back her with beaucoup bucks to get it going.
I keep thinking of Vonzell Solomon, who was a really really good 3rd place contestant who never got a record deal. I think Melinda is a better singer, but I could think of reasons why Vonzell would be easier to sell.
I hope Simon and company have the decency to sign her.

On Zaba Search Melinda was at 32.8%, Jordin just over 33.4% and Blake was just shy of 33.6%. I think Melinda had an off (for her) night with the last two songs. Blake secured his spot by playing three new songs, while Mindy and Jordin repeated an earlier song. Of the three, only one is a musician – Blake – I think that gives him an advantage. He is also the one that takes big chances. To me that is the difference.

I think the final 2 should have been Blake and Melinda. Though he can’t belt it out like the divas this season, he has a beautiful voice. He is a true musician and entertainer. He will no doubt make AI and all his fans, like me, proud. He earned his place in the finale.

Melinda would be a wonderful cabaret performer – selling out nightclubs and one woman shows all over the universe.
That is her niche. Because she is diverse, this allows her to easily interpret many genres and there is a place for this. Broadway!

MCL, you wrote: ” Because she is diverse, this allows her to easily interpret many genres and there is a place for this. Broadway!”
I just can’t see Melinda on Broadway. She is too mousy, and not cheesy enough to be an actress. She’d be incredible doing review after review of showtunes, but I can’t see her carrying a show.
IMHO,
Anita
